Hi, as er usual-great little kit by Dragon. Suspension construction is much simplified. Built out of the box using supplied etch and handles made from fine wire. Comes with a great litle etched Cullins plough.

Australian Army M113 (Vietnam)

Hi everyone

I recently finished this one. It's Academy's 1/35 M113IA (Vietnam) kit.

This vehicle was part of a three vehicle troop called 'BLOOD', 'SWEAT' '& TEARS' which were part of A Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment, Royal Australian Armoured Corps.

It was equipped with a T50 steel turret and a .50 calibre M2 Browning heavy machine gun. A pintle mounted .30 calibre L3A4 Browning medium machine gun is also fitted to the turret top.

It was airbrushed with acrylics and weathered with pastel chalks. I also used a few bits and pieces from 'Mouse House' (decals, sponson armour, replacement rear cargo hatch etc) and the figures were from 'Firestorm'.

It's the first time I have built and painted figures and I'm still not sure if I am 100% happy with them. Constructive criticism and suggestions for improvement welcome as always.

Thanks for looking

Greg

A couple of 1/35th vehicles

Hello all,

I'be been a long time lurker on these forums and decided it was about time I got some pictures up here of a couple of completed models. These have all been finished in the last year - it's strange, because although aircraft are my main passion, I never seem to get many completed. I can just never get the finish right. I do like to have a go at weathering though as these models hopefully show...

This is the Hobbyboss Land Rover Defender XD 'Wolf' WMIK kit - I know about the errors (spare wheel should be on the roll cage, based on the prototype etc) but this was an OOB build. I would like to try another one with the mods required for modern version, possibly in the green camo scheme, at some point. I have seen the Accurate Armour conversion kits on their website which look nice but pricey! This one was painted using a Tamiya rattle can.

This is an Academy M151a my girlfriend picked up in a sale for me. Came out quite neatly, considering I brush painted the green on this!

This Tamiya Jeep was given to me at Christmas - well, I chose it, my parents wrapped it! I thought it would make a nice companion to the Mutt above. Chose to build the version with the wire cutter, which inevitably got snapped then repaired! The weathering doesn't look as subtle in the photo as it does in reality.

Currently, I am working on an Academy M3 Lee which has quite a detailed interior for an OOB build. So I am having fun with that.

Thanks for looking and happy building!

Vickers MkVIb light tank in N. Africa

The Vickers MkVIb was a major component of the desert force of General Richard O’Connor which won perhaps Britain’s most complete military victory of the war at Beda Fomm against the Italians as part of Operation Compass. The 1st RTR was part of the 7th Armoured Division which faced the Italian Army back in 1940 as the Italians advanced into Egypt and then built their fortified camps. The combination of the new kit from Vulcan and the Echelon Fine Details markings for the MkVIbs’ of 1st RTR was a sufficient stimulation to get this project started. Following regimental tradition all the names of the 1st battalion RTR began with the letter ‘A’ and ‘Agrippa’ can be seen on the book on Beda Fomm by Kenneth Macksey. The MkVIb certainly soldiered on in N. Africa to the end of 1941 as they can be seen in photographs of 32nd Army tank Brigade which broke out of Tobruk in December of 1941.

The Vulcan kit is excellent value with a full working suspension system and link and length tracks. I chose to replace the locking nuts for the suspension spring arms with some from Grandt Line. As I was making in the kit and looked at photos it was clear that 1st RTR MkVIbs’ were adapted from their European brethren. Most notably sand shields must be added. Fortunately there are 1/35 drawings of the desert MkVIbs’ provided in the book by George Bradford on British WWII AFVs from which scratch made sand shields can be designed. In addition, a unique tool box on stilts must be scratch built for the port side. The lever and shovel are then moved to the starboard side under the exhaust pipe. On the rear a rack must be added for 3 x POW cans. I was unsure of the smoke dispensers on the turret sides so replaced the firing mechanisms with cut-back Lee-Enfield stocks from my spares. Fortunately, a period plan paint scheme for the Caunter camouflage for a mkVIb is provided in volume 2 of the books on British vehicle colours by Dick Taylor. To provide a lively scene and give a sense of scale I prepared some RTR figures from Miniart and Masterbox but using Hornet heads with markings from Archer. We normally associate North Africa with heat and short trousers, but Operation Compass started in November and went on through the winter when temperatures were more typically 7oC then 40oC! Their cap badges and the pyrene extinguisher placard are from Inside the Armour.

Hope you like it?

Andrew

1/25 Tamiya cutaway Australian Centurian

Hi Everyone

Attached are some photo's i had the pleasure of taking of my friend John Loughman's large 1/25 Tamiya Centurion

John is an excellent modeller with experience going back to the very beginning of plastic modelling he is a very young circa 1937 vintage with a wealth of knowledge and generosity of spirit one finds rarely in life, John has completed this model for the Vietnam Veterans museum at Phillip Island Victoria, indeed he has completed many, many models and diorama's for them, with some unique subjects including a 1/35 scale mine damaged M113 recovery, a 1/72 scale scratchbuilt HMAS Sydney, and recently a 1/32 Phantom recon aircraft ''Carolina Kangaroo'' an aircraft flown by an Aussie on over 100 missions, John is supplied by the museum with the kits to build but seeks no reimbursement for the hundreds of hours he spends researching , building and in most cases scratch building many subjects, unfortunately John is a very modest man and has had very little press coverage that really is a shame as many modellers remain unaware of his work, as i have recently completed a ''tree change'' to Central Victoria and live very close to him i have taken it upon myself to publicise his projects where possible in an effort gain wider exposure of an aspect to modelling and donating without seeking favour or reward that i for one find a noble trait indeed.

Here then are pics of his latest a cutaway version of the ubiquitous Centurion, now most of us would shy away the amount of work involved in the conversion to Australian service via the excellent Mouse House conversion , but not this man, he said to me ''i will do a cutaway version'' ''i said John exactly how much red wine have we been drinking and did i hear you correctly''?? well he built the kit detailed it posed the crew, and started to cut the thing open with a blade mounted on a soldering iron, unfortunately this did not work as planned so a vibrating shaper saw was used and although it did partly seal after cutting runs it was eventually possible to get the results that are here for all to see,

I apologise for posting seven images but i found it difficult to choose which ones to use

NWL_0746 by nikon boy1, on Flickr

NWL_0762 by nikon boy1, on Flickr

NWL_0755 by nikon boy1, on Flickr

NWL_0786 by nikon boy1, on Flickr

NWL_0789 by nikon boy1, on Flickr

NWL_0791 by nikon boy1, on Flickr

NWL_0806 by nikon boy1, on Flickr

Cheers

Norm

Whippet and guts

Okay...

Work has sent me down south to England for a week or two. I'm in Bristol for the weekend, work has finished and it is absolutely precipitating down outside.

Drat! What to do? Eh? What to do...?

Luckily I just happened, perchance, to bring down an Emhar 1/35th Whippet + resin guns and Airwaves external PE that I got from Raptor a week or so ago. Cool stuff!

Funny thing is, I also just happened, perchance, to bring my modelling kit, some spare styrene, paints, airbrush and compressor. I've managed to smuggle it all past the hotel staff into my room... Not an easy task btw. Don't know if they'd say anything, probably couldn't care less but the compressor might be a bit difficult to explain away. Boo!

I've dug out some pics from T'internet and hope to scratch an interior to this thing. Unfortunately pics of the whippet interior are rare and what is available is extremely rusty and in poor condition. I suppose that makes it easier as no one can argue with my interpretation of a Whippet interior.

So, on to the obligatory pics

There's not really much to this kit but with a bit of TLC it really does build into a very nice model.

Note: I'll be using the dreaded Emhar plastic tracks that reduced me to sheer, incandescent rage on my last Whippet before I finally got them fixed in place with six inch nails.

Interior

I think I must be insane to try this in a hotel.

Eastern front enemies: Tamiya KV-2 and StuG III

I built these a while back, and haven't made anything I was as proud of yet.. Both are 1:48.. The StuG has a PE set on it from a brand who's name escapes me now. Something with a lion in it.. Can't really remember. The KV-2 is bog standard. Finished with Tamiya acryllics, the odd dash of humbrol and topped off with oil washes and Mig pigments..

And his playmate..

Early Cold War NATO tank colors

Hello folks,

I tried googling this but got no clear answers: were early Cold War NATO tanks US olive drab? I'm talking about, say, Pershings, M48s, Leopard 1s, etc., before they began adopting the 3-tone scheme in the 80s (?)

Thanks!
