  1. Correct, the F3F-3 had the sidewalls forward of Station 8 painted flat black. See page 101 in the Ginter book. Roughly the front half of the cockpit
  2. Also, a number of P-12C/D/Es were given to the Navy and redesignated as F4B-4As to be used as trainers. When their training command services was complete, many F4B-4/F4B-4As were transferred to VJ-3 and VJ-5 and used as target drones under Project FOX.
