not the normal hobbyboss A-10 question

hi
well im in the process of building hobbyboss's 1/48 A-10 and it comes with a very nice (in my eyes) GAU-8 avenger, the only problem is once the fuse is closed up you can see it! im using eduards exterior PE set which replaces the exterior barrel so im left with pretty much the whole cannon assembly spare! so i have 2 questions
1, is there anywhere to find a good image of the GAU-8 out of the aircraft so i can get a good colour match, all i have found on google is b/w images or partial cannons,
2, what to do with the cannon once its complete? as i dont want to waste it!

cheers, chris

Hi,
I would like to know if the plastic nose ( conical shape ) in the Trumpeter, 1/48, Su-15A Flagon, is correct.
I ask it because I have the Quickboost 1/48 radome correction ( ogival shape ) for the Su-15 but I don't know
if it is intended for ALL versions of the Su-15 including the "A" version ?
Also where can I find a good 1/48 resin cockpit for it ?
Thank You and Good Luck.
Tonka

Spitfire 22 and 24

This is a build of a couple of 1/72 Spitfires - the Jays (successor to Ventura who are re-issuing the kits) and the CMR Spitfire 22/24 in parallel. These are two kits from opposite ends of the spectrum. They are both very accurate but the CMR is quite expensive but complete and the Jays is quite inexpensive although a little basic. The object is to make them to a similar standard and compare the time and the resources I have to put into each. This will enable me to pontificate from a position of knowledge if anyone ever asks me to compare them!
Here's what I have available. There is a very nice reference book from Mark 1 Publications - soon to be re-issued with decals. This is highly desirable if you are tackling a late Spitfire like these.

The grey plastic bits are what comes in the Jays kit and the cream resin is all from the CMR kit.

Looking at the kit parts in more detail, you can see the mighty sprue gates, sometimes flowing on to the actual part and the lack of cockpit and wheelwell detail are going to be challenges in the Jays build. I have built a few CMR Spitfires before and I don't expect any problems. Also, the kit comes with a really nice decal sheet and some spare parts which I think the Jays kit will benefit from.

I can see the wheel wells are going to be a scratch-build job but I happen to have a Pavla resin cockpit for a PR.19 which I think I can adapt to the 22/24.

The current plan is to do one as a RAF 24 in camouflage with rockets and a belly tank and one as a Syrian 22 in natural metal or maybe camouflage. We shall see...........

Bell P-39Q Airacobra (Russian)

Hi All,

Following on from my Yak-1B conversion/build I got my hands on the old Airfix 1/72 P-39Q Airacobra kit. I built one of these a couple of weeks ago and liked the overall build, but decided it could do with a little updating. As with most kits of this age there is no cockpit, other than a seat slab, at all. So with a copy of Modelaid International No.22, which just happens to have a paper cockpit in 1/72 scale contained within it, which I will use as a template to create a scratch-built example that's that area sorted. As with most of my builds I will modify the kit seat item with plastic card to make it look a little better. I have created a decal for the instrument panel, which will be made from plastic card as will most of the cockpit details.

One area that really needed some attention on my previous build was the engine air intake, which sits on the aircraft's spine just behind the rear canopy glazing, the original build kit was deformed and needed filing and sanding back, which made it very short so I added a solid block of plastic strip cemented to the front and then filed and sanded to shape to correct the length. I may use this technique again as the shape of the intake looks wrong and it may give me a better chance of making this area look more realistic.

Again I am producing a set of plans and scaling them to the kit rather than trying to make the kit fit 1/72 scale plans as this is not always easy or possible. The kit dimensions are length (from the front of the cannon muzzle (Extended from the spinner) to widest part of the rudder) 13.0cm and the wing span (wing tip to wing tip) 14.6cm.

Anyway here are some pictures of the box lid, kit components and the decals.

One quick note about the decals, they are oversized for the kit and if used make the kit look a little odd.

Hope you enjoy the build.

Doug.

After pulling this out of the stash (been in there since 1988!) I decided the time had finally come to have another go at a blowpipe! It's not Tamigawa class but i thought i'd send of for an Aeries pit for it. Its actually for the Hasegawa one but i thought as it was cheap enough i'd have a go at making it fit! After grinding away at it for about 3 hours i think i've got it near on, and after a few dry fits it looks ok. The kit one is very sparse so its got to be an improvement! I have had to re-scribe the wings but i'm leaving the fuz well alone as the raised lines are pretty well done. The inlet trunking is going to be fun! Don't THINK i'm going to go mental with this as regards extras....but we'll see! Anyway its the first time i've ever used Etch and resin stuff so it could all be a disaster, and as i've bought some etch for a 72nd Swordfish i need summat to practise on! Thanks for peeping!

John

Now if ever a lump of resin could be called SEXY....this has to be one!

Following this discussion I decided to go ahead and build the Tamiya kit as a quick summer project.
My plan was to go OOTB but soon I decided to use an Eduard Zoom set I had lying around, which (as usual) slowed things down a bit. I also found a few resin bits which will come in handy later on.

Anyway, on to the pics.
The basic cockpit area ready for painting:

The Eduard set is pretty useful but I didn't fancy the colour used for the instrument panel, the shade used looks more like RLM 66 than black to me.
Instead I decided to stick with the kit panel and use decals for the instrument faces, the decals were scrounged from other kits and the ever useful Mike Grant sheet in 1/48th.

For the oxygen hose I wrapped thin lead wire around a thicker piece of brass wire:

The cockpit and sidewalls painted up (still need to install parts of the harness):

For this project I plan to use the Montex Masks as per the above discussion to see how they work.
Still haven't figured out in which order to paint the markings but there is still some assembly to do before getting that far...

Cheers,
Anders

Spitfire IXc Vs. IXe

Hi all,

I have the Revell/Hasegawa Spitfire IXc in the stash, but would like to finish it to represent the BBMF's Mk.IX, which is a LFIXe. Do any of you know what would be involved in converting the Hasegawa kit into this type?

Presumably the cannon would be shifted to the outboard gun bays, and a .50 cal put in the inboard bays - that shouldn't be too difficult. However, I'm no expert on the Spitfire, so am at a loss as to what else would need altering to make the Spit look "right" externally.

I'd appreciate any help/pointers that folk could give regarding this one!

Cheers

Tamiya P-47D Thunderbolt

Just completed this build of one of my all time favourite planes, Ben Mayo's 'No Guts No Glory'. I built this alongside a Hasegawa P-47 and this one just passed the post first. Nothing I can say about the kit that hasn't already been said, it really is that good. It was built pretty much out of the box with the exception of a Quicboost engine, a few Eduard PE parts and Aeromaster 'Thunderbolts Galore' and stencil decals. Painted with Alclad and Humbrol enamels, Futured and then weathered with Tamiya smoke and Promodellers Dark Dirt. Finally sealed with a coat of Xtracrylix Matt.

Comments and Critique welcome.

Pete
