In the non IPMS queue- breeze to get in to the car park but it’s somewhat busier than usual I thought.

The gloom is lifting with the mist burning off so looks like a beautiful day.

reasonable non IPMS queue but not as big as I’ve seen before- maybe cos I’m early or maybe because many have joined.

Single IPMS annual membership is £32, SMW entry £25 so actually makes sense on the basis you get in free as a member an hour earlier and get the magazines etc as well.

I tend to go to SMW every other year so maybe I’ll sign up in ‘26.

have a good show everyone

TT

It's £28 to get in for non-members, £25 + £3 booking fee. So more reason to get membership 🙂

I enjoyed yesterday.  Met up with some of the BM villains, saw lots of superb builds and spent far too much money (partly enabled by James @81-er).  Also indoctrinated @3DStewart into the murky world of the Group Build.

It was very busy indeed, but manageable, even for someone with my antisocial tendencies.

Wonderland were selling of a selection of kits from a loyal customer of theirs who passed away at 87, he had about 9000 unbuilt kits, all stored around his place, quite sad really

Every time I walked past it it was rammed. I never got in to see what was what.

Well there’s the winner of the ‘’STABLE’ acronym (STAsh Beyond Life Expectancy), RIP to the chap, I’m hoping it brought him happiness. Hope that all that benefitted build them kits, they deserve to be built, otherwise Wonderland may end up buying them back again!

Even though it is 2 days, it's the quickest 2 days in the year. It went whizzing past and had a thoroughly great time.

I've just worked out what that would have cost at an average new price of £15!

There has to have been a fair degree of OCD there I guess.

There were many multiples of most of those kits, e.g. I think I saw at least 7 of the Seahawk kit I bought.

Still I guess if it was spread out over a 75+ years of modelling (thats still 120 kits a year, or 2 & bit kits a week!)

I would have put the average closer to £10 as a lot of the smaller kits were £4.99 - £7.99, but even so it's not small change!

But what price happiness? (or at least some modicum of pleasure) Maybe researching and then going into town and browsing the shop before buying the kit was what made their week. 🤷‍♂️

This was only my second time and I went on Sunday. I might try the full weekend next year as you've barely got time to look at everything in one day.

What was everyone's thoughts on the competition room? I took a while to find it as it wasn't indicated on the floor plan, but I preferred the extra space over last year's set up. It was just a shame that the best in show winners were tucked into literally the darkest corner of the room.

@Bobby No Mac Sunday was more relaxed as usual. This year was the first year I stayed down in Telford rather than commuting from my inlaws near Middlewhich.

Got to see so much more of the tables and really enjoy it without having to try to sprint around everything before dashing back North each day.

As to the competition I agree. Better to have the extra space in hall 3 and the competition area separate.

It was a little cramped in there when it was busy, but not too bad and having natural light was a help - albeit with minor issue of the low angle of the sun at this time of year led to lots of lens flare for photos.

The best in show did need a better position though - I think the main issue was the massive ship in it's case that took up most of the table. Certainly excellent model, but had it not been there, then the "best" table might have seemed less squished in the corner. My favourite was the scratch built / 3D designed and printed colony ship and that sadly was squished into the corner next to the curtain.

It was good to see so much international participation this year, I’d say it’s probably back to pre-covid levels. Lots of stunning models to see in all the halls, although the lighting in the competition room was a bit challenging, particularly for taking photos, but some truly amazing models. Well done to all the IPMS organising committee, another brilliant show!

Echoing everything Andy says, a wonderful show this year and abysmal lighting in the competition room, but that isn't IPMS's fault after all.

Unless the Centre can add extra light behind the blank wall I doubt it it can be bettered. My ruined back and knees appreciated not having to crawl upstairs to the mezzanine competition are from recent years, especially if carrying models for display.

All in all, I can't wait for next time, begone dull winter!

Do you happen to remember what won?

I didn’t go near the competition area, not the first time I haven’t seen the competition, because I was enjoying the club areas so much.

I always go on the Sunday as it is less manic, having experienced a Saturday visit a few years ago! Always nice to see the 2 minutes silence respected though those in Hall 1 didnt appear to have been told but eventually heard the bugle and were quiet.

Had a good wander around and the tables seemed to have a wee bit more space between them - may have been an optical illusion but worked well. I should have picked up one of those Bachmann frontage hangar HAS model/diorama pre-painted things - they were RRP at £129 but being sold at £29.99 - an absolute bargain.

As it was I picked up a LS models K-15 Kamikaze in 1/72 which Id been toying with  from a nice chap in Hall 1 who seemed to be selling off a deceased chap's stash. I agree there were some good bargains at Wonderland - that must have been some stash to wade through!

Some fab models, good to see some friends as well - in the end I thought that it was somewhat busier than previous years (my last was in '22) and back to pre-COVID normality. I didnt make it to the competition room as I didnt know where it was.

Then a quick pop into Cosford on the way home, crikey the hangars seemed empty though I concede that those aircraft inside seem to be a bit better displayed it is disconcerting to see the state of the Jetstream round the back (which flew in!) and the Catalina. I understand that the Neptune is to go and possibly the Cat as well with other stuff being shoved outside. Sadly many of the experimental jets are now in storage or elsewhere. Good to hear that the Comper has gone on loan to Hooton Park - surely the Cygnet will follow as they have always been fish out of water in an RAF Museum.

Well done to IPMS as ever

Not totally bad person proof

Several yeas ago (about 2018? afair) two chaps got their wristbands then went to a photocopy shop in Telford centre. They got their wristbands colour copied, cut them out then gave them to their mates. Afaik about 10 or 12 mates got in with these wristbands.

The copied ones don't need to last long and they just showed the band on their wrist to the entrance crew. No checks to see if they were the real deal

The bad guys were IPMS members so got a wristband for both days

I happen to know them

Incredible! I have often wondered about the mentality of guys paying to get into a model show with the aim to steal from Traders but now I'm wondering if they even pay?

I once saw a guy running full pelt through Hall 3 being chased by a very irater Trader shouting "thief, thief". Unfortunately I wasn't quite close enough to trip the guy up but close enough to see he had a large box under his arm. Very gutsy to steal from a table in Hall 4 and expect to make it all the way out without getting caught. Of course I suffered from thieving many times when I was on the show circuit and it was one of the reasons I gave up on shows in the end.

Not sure. It was in class 18 (?) "scale 143 and larger scratch built"

As best I can work out it must be 1:48. The Vimy was 13.28m long so at 1:48 that's 277mm which looks about right?

It was a busy one for me. A fair bit of shopping, but largely lots of talking to the people I knew there (which was lovely). However, it did mean that at 2:30pm on Sunday I realised I hadn't actually looked at the club stands! So a very quick run round was done. I did manage to have a look at the contest on Sunday morning though, with lots of very impressive models on display there. I'm very glad I didn't have to judge them! My only complaint about the contest area was all of the photographers. People with their phones and hand-held cameras are fine, but there were several in there with tripods and various reflective things for the flashes totally ignorant of the bottlenecks there were causing by blocking off the gangways to get that "perfect" shot. That one gripe aside, it was a great show, and the best since I started attending it in 2022

Sunday was quiet, I breezed through the entrance at about 9.45, and walked straight in.

Highlights; The Overlord display, the SciFi stand with the mad Borg cube, the 1/32 SIG. That winning Vimy is unbelievable in real life. Got most of what I came for, the staff on the Squires stand I was chatting to was disappointed about crowd size though so I guess Saturday was busier?
