Neddy Posted October 27, 2024 Posted October 27, 2024 I for one am getting excited about the show, it'll be my first and I've treated myself to a decent hotel for three nights so that we* can go to the Cosford air museum on the Sunday. *We being myself and the LSW (Long Suffering Wife), bless her.

Sorry for the delay in answering, we have been away and where we were staying had very poor Internet. 6 hours ago, spruecutter96 said: I really don't want to be a downer here, but folks need to be aware of the possibility of getting Covid at the show. I know five people who been infected with it in the last two months. Also, you can forget the idea that the virus is just like the common cold, these days. It most definitely is NOT. My brother had it recently, started about six weeks ago, and he's still feeling some very unpleasant side-effects. This is not meant to scare people - please just take every precaution you can. I would thoroughly recommend getting vaccinated before you turn up at Telford. Cheers and enjoy the show. Chris. Covid is never going to go away and has been on rise. For some, it is like a cold, for others it is quite serious, and I echo spruecutters remarks about the vaccination. I had my flu and covid jabs at the beginning of the month. Any place where there a lot of people in a enclosed space, there is a risk of catching that is droplet or airborne Oh, while we are the subject, there is talk of Jeremy Clarkson needed heart surgery etc, due to the covid vaccination. I feel that Clarkson apparently smoking 40 a day for 40 plus years, together an admitted liking for alcohol and an acknowledged dislike of exercise is a more likely explanation 3 2
3DStewart Posted October 27, 2024 Posted October 27, 2024 (edited) With regards covid, I wonder whether those worried about it at SMW ever go to work, or shops, or theatres, or parties, or use public transport, or go to other model shows? Everyone is capable of doing their own risk assessment for attending SMW. I have, and I assess my risk from covid there as very low, no further mitigation necessary. iainpeden Posted October 27, 2024 Posted October 27, 2024 Covid - had it twice recently. Once at the end of July and again a couple of weeks back - probably caught on a trans-Atlantic flight. Also had the flu and covid vaccine last Monday so I'm hoping I'm pretty immune for a few months! 1

You can however make an informed choice, people do it with their lives all the time. If they understand the information they have been given and are able to make an autonomous decision, then it is an informed choice. It might not be what you, or I consider to be the 'right' choice, but they have made that decision. It is quite possible to make perfectly valid decisions about your own health risks without initially consulting a health professional. 3

It is quite possible to make perfectly valid decisions about your own health risks without initially consulting a health professional. Define "informed". Define valid". I would say that without up-to-date and relevant information from an informed source then you cannot judge the level of risk. This is simply true about everything in life, not just Covid. I am not attempting to tell you it will be too risky to go to Telford, for I don't know, but the level of risk from Covid is rising in the UK and medical professionals are worried about it. Going or not is up to you, indeed, and I wish you good luck. But don't attempt to tell me that you know the level of risk, just from "feel" and "the guy down the pub", Which, in effect, is what you are proposing. 1
Mr T Posted October 28, 2024 Posted October 28, 2024 No I am proposing nothing of the sort. It is possible to obtain reliable information, not from the bloke down the pub but from the various NHS sites both local and national. Practice websites often have information or links. If you have a health condition where Covid (or indeed any respiratory infection) creates a risk, then of course you should a consult an appropriate health care professional. I would call a valid decision as one made by a person with full capacity who has received appropriate information (including possible adverse outcomes), making an autonomous decision. The classic example is the refusal of an adult to consent to medical treatment eg Jehovahs Witnesses refusing blood transfusion. This is something I have dealt with in my professional life and can be quite difficult. I am a retired nursing lecturer who taught healthcare law and ethics as I held qualifications in both fields and was a clinical nurse. My wife is a recently retired nurse practitioner, and any decision I make on attending any event where there will be a large number of people will, I assure you, be a considered one. 9
KITCAT Posted October 29, 2024 Posted October 29, 2024 Look were all going so settle down I'm jabbed up with no certificate this time, Just over a funny little dose of something I'm sure the jabs worked.
Tbolt Posted October 30, 2024 Posted October 30, 2024 I've managed not to get COVID the last three years from the show, despite the questionable hygiene of some of the attendees 🤥 But I know there might be a chance I will get it, but I work at an airport where I pass by thousands of people a day so the possibility of getting COVID at a model shows isn't putting me off, so I'll be there. 2 1 4

In addition, quite a few of my friends outside of the SIG have also indicated that they are not going, so it will be interesting to see how things turn out.
Noel Smith Posted November 1, 2024 Posted November 1, 2024 This thread has drifted into becoming a discussion about Covid and its inherent risks instead of SMW2024. I've had my jabs and will take my chances rather than being so risk averse that I will give in to fear. Life is for living, so I will be going to Telford ! 2 6
Tijuana Taxi Posted November 2, 2024 Posted November 2, 2024 (edited) I caught Covid when I went to a gig in London,Feb 2020, it was right at the start of the outbreak when no one knew much about it. Very unpleasant, similar to a severe case of flu with upset stomach as an added bonus. Since then i've travelled extensively here and in Europe on public transport and attended more gigs. Vaccine count is now 7 after the recent winter one and will carry on having what's offered. I would have like to attended Telford, but already had a previously booked engagement at the Tramway Museum in Crich. Hope all those that go have a great time and don't worry about catching any of the seasonal viruses doing the rounds. Edited November 2, 2024 by Tijuana Taxi 1

They were very useful as paint mules.
81-er Posted November 2, 2024 Posted November 2, 2024 I'll be there with Southend, we'll be in hall 2, block F. I'll also be loitering around at the BM gathering, as/when a time and location is arranged. If you see a 40-something, long-haired, reprobate with a purple duck badge on, it's probably me James 1 1
Rob G Posted November 3, 2024 Posted November 3, 2024 I won't be there again this year, so you lucky, lucky people won't be saddled with me. I envy you, I really do. 1
Noel Smith Posted November 3, 2024 Posted November 3, 2024 Keep reading about a BM 'gathering' at Telford. Details ?
Whofan Posted November 3, 2024 Posted November 3, 2024 1 hour ago, Noel Smith said: Keep reading about a BM 'gathering' at Telford. Details ? Usually, someone suggests that BM people meet up at one of the club tables on the Saturday lunchtime, in the past it’s often been in hall 3 because there’s a bar there. If you said meet at the bar in hall 3 about 1pm, you’ll almost certainly meet up with a thirsty Britmodeller or two. Of course, you will guarantee meeting at least one Britmodeller by visiting Martin Hale (that’s the Martian, who uses a human name on earth) Zeppelin display in Hall 1, and likely several others. And there’s no reason not to meet up at the bar in hall 3 on Sunday lunchtime, either!! 1
Flying Badger Posted November 3, 2024 Posted November 3, 2024 For those asking about the badge.... there is a template file in the FAQ section.
Flying Badger Posted November 3, 2024 Posted November 3, 2024 Meet up.... Keighley IPMS (my local club) has a table on the end of the first row of tables of hall 3. I lf memory serves this is almost next to the bar. Last year it was 2pm at a branch stand in almost exactly the same spot. (I think we did 2 pm to avoid lunch busy period at the bar etc.) In the absence of any other specific suggestions, can I suggest 2 pm on Saturday afternoon at the end of the Keighley table for the Britmodeller meet up? 3
Flying Badger Posted November 3, 2024 Posted November 3, 2024 I'll make sure I'm at the Keighley table around then (If you ask for flyingbadger they'll look confused.... they'll know me as Andy!).
Tim R-T-C Posted November 3, 2024 Posted November 3, 2024 https://www.facebook.com/share/p/15nEtL74nk/ Airfix have just announced an anniversary badge and a limited edition coin which will be on sale at the show. 18 minutes ago, Flying Badger said: In the absence of any other specific suggestions, can I suggest 2 pm on Saturday afternoon at the end of the Keighley table for the Britmodeller meet up?
