Hokey pokey let’s get to it…….

…..lots done and as the title now says “major painting completed”!!!

I’ll show a little more of all the masking steps, but there were lots today….. 7 I think and about 2 ½ hours worth maybe more.......I made Donut Balls in the middle of it!  :eat:   :D

Today was all about the Grey Nurse, though I did finish up completing the minor stuff on the Burma bird.

First job saw to line out the pattern, this was for all 3colours too follow.

IMG_4494-L.jpg

Then fill in the stuff not to be painted….it’s really easy to get confused here…….

IMG_4495-L.jpg

….then on with the dark Green…

IMG_4496-L.jpg

…….and yes I managed to knock off the other aileron this time!!!! :wall:

Right 2 more lots of masking later, for Foliage Green & RAAF DSG (Dark Sea Grey) and we have this…….

IMG_4497-L.jpg

IMG_4498-L.jpg

IMG_4499-L.jpg

….even more masking and we have the old RAF roundels painted out…

IMG_4500-L.jpg

……then finally 2 more lots of masking and we have the RAAF makings plus one tail band!

IMG_4501-L.jpg

I decided to paint the roundels and tail band as they look so mush better when painted……

IMG_4502-L.jpg

IMG_4503-L.jpg

….and to see it in the flesh it just looks amazing, really worth the effort.

So the dynamic duo together, already for the clear coat and remaining decals, still quite a bit to do but it’s all very much down hill now, I’ll concentrate on finishing the grey Nurse first, but should have them done but the 25th.

So good!

What's your method for making negative circular masks for the painted over roundels?

it's pretty basic, in this case I used the masks that came with the model. I used the circle masks to get the right positions, then carefully cut the surrounds of these from the mask sheet (these were very thin in places) and laid them over the circle masks. That gave me the perfect circle in the right positions. Once I was happy with the placements I just removed the inner circles to leave the outer rings. I just masked up airing the outside of these ring masks.

If I didn't have these masks then I would just cut some out with a circle cutting and lay them out the same way.

One thing to do while the mask is still altogether is to draw the centrelines, you need this to align them inner masks.

I hope this makes sense.....

It does to me anyway Rich! I might even try it on my Spitfire.

Once I've finished my truck of course

Ordered some of those MRP paints you used for your desert Spitfire Rich, thanks for the tips. Once I get everything in from the postman I'll get started on mine. That darn RAF Dark Green color is super hard to come by here in the States though and need it for two other kits. Also got the AMMO by MIG desert RAF color set so should be some interesting times. Yours look great.

I often have issues getting some of the colours as well, I now tend to plan well in advance and order early (when I order Dark Sea Grey last year it took 2 months to arrive!), but my supplier is getting better...that sounds sooo bad! :D

That's the one huge advantage of using this paint. The down side for me is that I'm now more tempted to do much more complex schemes, so masking now takes forever.

Ok more done on her, though progress has slowed due to being back at work……well working from home.

Unfortunately this Eduard model has started to lose it’s shine!! The way the ailerons mount to the wing is just plain ridiculous and stupid. Why they couldn’t just use a couple of pins!!! I have now managed to knock them all off at some stage! :wall:

But worse still is the decals!! Truly horrible things that need to be hung by their Gentleman Bits…….along with persons involved with them!!!  They look really nice but that’s all. They are super shiny, and thick like planks of wood! I was worried my new Ammo Mig decal solution saw too hot for them…no way! I ended up having to drown them in the softener stuff just to get them to conform!!!

Anyway more on that later…… both were given good solid coats of clear and left over night to cure.

I started decaling the Burma one first, gosh I wished I have paint those markings as well! It was now that I started to realize how horrible these decals are. Just so thick you lose all that lovely fine detail under them!

But I do like this scheme, it’ll look some much better after a wash and a Flat coat.

Next the Grey Nurse, by now I knew I was in for it with the shark’s mouth! The decals do look so out of place with the painted markings.

From a distance and the right angle the shark’s mouth almost looks ok……….but close up!

IMG_4512-L.jpg

IMG_4513-L.jpg

Even though it came in 4 parts I had to make lots of relief cuts to the 2 lower section just to get them to start to conform to the shape of the cowling. Then buckets of the softening solution and constant dabbing with a damp paper towel was required to get the decals to conform. I found just leaving them with the softening solution wasn't enough when doing the Burma bird.

I’ll let then set overnight again before giving them another gloss clear coat before giving them washes. The sharks mouth I’ll hand paint the areas that need work.

I’ll be happy once the Flat coat is on!!

Finally the exhausts…talk about over engineered, they were a pain to do as well……..but look quite good when fitted.

I just can’t believe Eduard did such an amazing job with the model only to almost stuff it up with the decals!!

Thanks for the warning of potential issues on the decals.  I am surprised as the ones in the 72nd kits I’ve done were superb in all matters!

Cheers

I must admit, I am surprised too, the 1/72nd ones are great, it is a shame they have dropped the ball on the decals for its bigger brother.

That's really interesting to hear!

These decals look really thick as well, I've used decals as vibrant and beautifully detailed that have been so thin.

Cartograf decals are usually really nice but not these ones.

Seems quite a few modellers have problems with Eduard decals Either they're too thick or the wrong colour (like the sky codes on the 1/48 Tempest - horrible!). Eduard just don't seem to do good decals, they let down otherwise very good kits.

Having said that, I think the shark's mouth will look fine with a bit of re-touching and the flat coat.

It looks like Grey Nurse needs some dentistry...

Those decals are one of the first bathes from Eduard right?

Before they used Cartograf for everything, but now they have their own printer. I do agree that they are very thick, shiny and also has a slight tendency to melt and run :(

They're looking good Rich - couldn't you have had a word with the painters to hide the previous roundels a bit better? ;)
