Definitely agree on ridiculous over engineering by Eduard, utterly infuriating, exhaust, cowl just ruin the experience....I think it’s such a shame, though you seem to have done a good job so far

Rich this may be of interest. The decals i got with my eduard kit were all blotchy and were flaking in tiny places and so not usable. I wrote to eduard to complain and they wrote me back saying their production supervisor said its ‘ impossible ‘ they think its spray from an airbrush i had sprayed on it??!! So ive took a super macro shot of The decal with the small pieces that have come away. I have not heard back since i sent it 2 days ago. But thought this was relevant considering your post on eduards decals. What quality customer service eh? 😆

These are looking superb!

Agree with what you say about the decals, had similar issues on the Eduard Bf-109 I'm building. I use Mr Mark Softer, and found that by putting it underneath the decal first, they conform better. The downside of this is you have to place it accurately straight off because its super difficult to move. After that I applied it on top too. Not perfect, but does help to allow some of the recessed detail to show.

Those decals are one of the first bathes from Eduard right?

Before they used Cartograf for everything, but now they have their own printer. I do agree that they are very thick, shiny and also has a slight tendency to melt and run :(

No I think these are all Cartograf as they have their name on the 3 main sheets. I've really surprised as I've used Cartograf decals before and found them awesome to use!

They're looking good Rich - couldn't you have had a word with the painters to hide the previous roundels a bit better? ;)

I think that's one of the best parts of the scheme.... "arr this colour's close enough she'll do!"  :D

not good at all! Maybe you'll get a surprise in the mail...though if it ticks don't open it!

Yeah i tried different methods before I got to the teeth as I could see they just didn't want to conform. On the mouth though, any part the sat up I literally filled with that softening solution, that seemed to be the only way to go. But I was worried, it definitely took the shine of the gloss clear! I think it would ave dissolved any normal decal.

I had the same issue with those Aviaeology decals for my Shark's mouth Typhoon, very similar except those crumbled when they tried to conform to curves!

If this one had have been 1/32nd then I would have just masked the whole thing and painted it, would have been much simpler and looked better. That said I have my Silhouette cutting machine here, maybe I should have just scanned the decals and made masks!!

It goes a long way to prove that there are exceptions to every rule ^_^

Plenty of people rate Cartograf decals. I am not one of them. Every time I get a set of decals with their name on I feel deflated as I know they will put up a struggle. Literally every time I have used them they have been ridiculously thick and would refuse to stick or conform to any surface detail.

The good news is that I found a fix for it in the shape of Ultimate Products extra strong decal solution. I had applied some Caracal decals (printed by Cartograf) to an F-15 I was making and had all the aforementioned issues, plus the worst silvering I have ever encountered. A few applications of the Ultimate stuff worked wonders and saved the model from a flight into the nearest bin. I think it is an essential item to have in the tool kit, as there's always going to be a time when you meet uncooperative decals.

Cheers,

Mark.

Thanks for the warning of potential issues on the decals.  I am surprised as the ones in the 72nd kits I’ve done were superb in all matters!

Cheers

I may have dodged a bullet as my 1/48 is the Profipack which seems to have Eduard decals. On the other hand another bullet may have my name on for decals in the 72nd Aussie 8 in the stash?

I'll have to see if I can find some of that stuff down here.

hopefully they are better (though probably not) and the schemes with the Shark's Mouth are really the ones you want to do....not that the other ones are boring.

Ok I gave both of them another gloms clear coat yesterday and a coat of wash.

Annoyingly some of the decals looked to have properly settled down and conformed nicely others not. Before that last clear coat I did try drowning them again in softener but it didn't really hep.

Plus I re-attached the 3 errant ailerons with super glue this time......if they come off again they'll probably take half the wing off with them!

I just realised I only have 2 days left in my planned schedule!!!  I'd better get a move on!!

Ok I’m pleased to say this will be the last update for this build!! :yahoo:

Now the real problem is for some reason I though ANZAC Day (25th) was Monday! I was hoping to have these done before then…..now not quite so sure!

Anyway…..this was the first time I’ve left a wash solution one a model overnight, and I have to say it seemed to have worked way better then normal!

The upper cowlings…gosh I am so pleased with them, they came out almost perfect!

IMG_4519-L.jpg

Both planes look so much better after the wash…..and I only managed to break off an alerion (2nd time), a gun barrel and a rudder! :wall:

Next they were give a coat of MRP Flat Clear then SMS’s Flat Clear only on the surfaces seen looking directly down from above. The SMS Flat Clear is a super flat clear coat and is great for that weathered sun burnt finish. On top of this using the same looking from above, a coat of super thinned (+95%) white was misted over the top.

This now gives me a good base for the weathering to come. Plus as can be seen the exhausts and cowling have now been fitted.

Pretty much all the remaining parts have been completed, I just need to sort them out and fit them….plus I still have to finish fixing up the issues with the shark’s mouth and do the black wing walk lines.

I’m not quite sure I’ll have them finished by tomorrow as I have work as well…..will have to see what happens!

Of note there will be no dawn service this year for the public due to the COVID-19, they now want everyone to stand out the front of their homes for the last post! In some ways this may be a bit more emotional than usual!  My son and my niece are both in service with the Army, so this time of the year I do reflect more than usual on such things!   :poppy:

GOOD GOSH! Those are turning out to be beautiful Rich! I am so envious! With yours as a guide, and a few others I have come across in the last several days, I cannot wait to try my hand at a Spitfire. Still waiting on the postman to deliver it, the few extras, and paints for it all. I can only hope mine turns out near as well as yours. Great too on the washes and clear coats. Will have to experiment with those as well. I like the idea of doing only the top as that is what's exposed to the elements more.

Blimey you can build a good model............ now and then....:giggle:

Better get my desert Spit sorted.

They are stunners! I would have been happy with just the top cowls, good enough to go in my cabinet! Really nice build.

Hi Rich,

Sorry only catching up with your build now. Excellent work. Just today I made a comment on the Eduard Spit's saying I don't mind the cowl or exhausts it is the ailerons and assembling the underwing radiators.  Next time I'm wiring the ailerons. Great work. The decals worry me for a future build. It's a good heads up.

Superb already. Those are both beautiful paintjobs. Can’t wait to see the weathering (I wouldn’t dare - I’d stop right there and be happy 😛).

God they look fantastic, great job!
What wash did you use rich and how did you remove it, it worked really well.

Was it a flory wash?

thanks everyone.... I am really happy with the finish, especially with the clear coats. Unfortunately the camera doesn't show it well at all, it's more noticeable in the flesh and you can really see the look I was going for.

They do now cry out for some weathering as they do look very clean.

I still have to do the black lines on the wings and fix up the mouth. I have noticed a couple of filler sink marks, that Tamiya filler doesn't like lacquer paints! I wont touch them for now, but I will drill out those spots and fill them with plastic. A couple of fresh paint patches won't hurt the look at all. :D

I really don't know what to say regarding the decals.....some have flatten quite well while others just refused....may AM decals are the way. But for the insignias, painting is really the only way to go I think.

This time I used Ammo Mig's Panel Line Washes, Blue Black and Black Night. Normally I just use Tamiya's Black.

In the past I've always been a bit rushed using both and as soon as they look dry I wipe them off using some enamel thinner to help....very messy and in the past not that effective with the Ammo stuff.

This time I did the washes late in the day so had to leave them till after work the next day. I was sort of worried they'd be hard to remove, but actually they came off quite easily. I still used a dab of thinner on the paper towel every so often. But it seemed to have such in those wee holes likes it's meant to!

I leant something new.......don't rush the wash! :D

You know, I never thought I liked the HF wing, but your build is changing my mind. It's got a certain awkward charm.

I know...it's sort of the ugly duckling of the family but I actually do like the lines of her

All that effort and expense then you balance them on top of a couple of glue bottles for pictures! Good heavens man build something more stable to use before you break more bits off.
