I use Tamiya Extra Thin quick setting for that, works a charm, also for those last couple of scratches. Nice going on the Spits!

it's a bit on the harsh side, with the Nail Polish remover you can use a cotton bud of tissue and can go over the spot a couple of times without doing any damage, plus you don't have to worry about finger prints. I've even used it on canopies, you just need to be a bit careful with it in that case.

Plus I like the smell! :D

I don’t believe it....... he builds too, I thought you just popped up to annoy people.

Some nice work here Rich, I am impressed, my ghast is suitably flabbered.

Manicure sticks? Careful you don’t break a nail in your next session

Superb work on these two! Like the cosmetic product tips as well as closing up techniques.

Ok I was so excited yesterday about starting the painting that I completely forgot that I still hadn’t fitted the wings yet!!

So that was first priority…….

….and that didn’t turn out quite as I had hoped as I ended up with a couple pf gaps that would need some work.

It’s strange that 2 identical models built at the same time and same way could have varying things to fix. The gaps were pretty much in the same place just different sizes.

IMG_4481-L.jpg

As can be seen (sort of) the main gap was on the RH wing/fuselage join, I’ve already filled this with plastic sprue.

The other gap of concern was the lower rear fuselage join, again sprues been used. I’ve left these joins to sit overnight to harden properly before I start on them. I’ve also filled in/remove the identification light from the Burma bird.

The props are pretty much done, just need to do the wash and flat clear coat then a touch of weathering.

IMG_4480-L.jpg

Same with the exhausts as well, they’re done.

Hopefully today I’ll get these joins sorted out and be ready for painting. The rest of the paint I need has arrived, so I should have a busy couple of days painting ahead.

Everything looks good on both but I'm particularly impressed with those exhausts.

These things build themselves do they?

Or have you hired some help?

Those props are very neat, as well as the wing to rear fuselage joints!

Today was a quite one on them, what time I did spend on them was trying to sort out those joins.......no painting today.

I may try to start tomorrow,,,, not 100% happy with the joins, but think some paint should sort them out.......or hide them! :D

Good stuff, I’m just going to follow your lead so il look at tidying up my joins tomorrow too

I need to hurry up in joining the fuselage together then!

just be a wee bit careful with the positioning of the cockpit module....if you haven't already fitted it! I had to sand back the bottom off on one of mine a little(the grey nurse), it wasn't sitting right and was causing the wing to not sit quite right. Plus try my trick of joining the fuselage in sections, upper rear and rudder first, lower rear, and front last, liquid glue is best for this.....and trap together where required. If you have alignment issues with the 2 fuselage sections (ones fractionally wider than the other I reckon) then keep that join on the bottom, you'll see what I mean, it's much easier to correct and hide! :D

I really do recommend you fit and glue the lower cowling in place, it makes fitting the wing so much easier and helps with getting a nice join.

Plus do heaps of test fitting to help get those perfect joins!

Even now with a few issues I've had with them, I still rate these models as a must buy, they're just that good!!!

Thanks for the Tips, Rich!

I probably should've sanded a bit at the lower cockpit to get a step free joint towards the wing, but what I got was good enough in any case.

Indeed it's a terrific kit. I think iI have another 3 or 4 VIII to go with my two completed Aussie Eights so I might be able to use the entire sheet in the end...

I don't know what I'm going to do with all the leftover decals! The box for my Aussie Eight was damaged along with the decals sheet, but only lightly on the top 2 corners, luckily I'm not using those ones.

Plus forgot to mention that I plan to paint all the insignias, they look so much better when painted.

All too true regarding the painted insignias.

Is the RAAF roundel blue the same as RAF by the way?

Yes it is luckily

Ok plenty done today…..and I really don’t like this type of hard edge painting!!!

Right these little lovelies arrived yesterday so am all set for the Burma Spitfire..... and other stuff.

IMG_4483-L.jpg

First up I primed all the areas I had done any work on to see how it looked…..note to self: don't use these primers again........for some reason the MRP Primers just seem to lift very easily?? Then paints themselves are fine…quite odd. Anyway am super pleased with these cowlings, the join is gone, though in certain lights you can just see it.

IMG_4484-L.jpg

IMG_4486-L.jpg

So all good and ready for Mr. Squiggle!

IMG_4487-L.jpg

I am sooo hopeless at doing straight lines with an airbrush!

So the 2 underside colours, Azure Blue and Medium Sea Grey…

IMG_4488-L.jpg

…. I couldn’t have asked for a better finish, I so love this paint.

Next up some masking and the first of the top colours, Mid Stone and Ocean Grey.

Again, super happy with the results…. every tiny rivet, even those I thought were lost and visible. Only a couple of issues…I dropped the Grey Nurse hence the missing aileron, and cannon barrel  :wall:  ,plus this being lacquer paint any spot I used filler on it tries to shrink it! Just a couple of tiny sink marks, but reckon I can hid those!

IMG_4489-L.jpg

Right masking for the brown one, hard edge wiggly camo…..what a pain! I had hoped/planned to do the second colours on both today, but just one took over an hour to mask!

But please to say the results were worth it, just some really minor stop touch-ups to do but other than that super clean finish!

IMG_4490-L.jpg

IMG_4491-L.jpg

IMG_4492-L.jpg

This light is not very flattering and shows all the issues, but in normal light they just disappear. But you can see every little rivet plus a couple of spots behind the canopy where the filler has shrunk, but this is with 4 “heavy” coats of this lacquer paint, and no detail is lost. You can sort of see why I get overly concerned about joins and using filler unnecessarily!

IMG_4493-L.jpg

My F-14D I painted with MRP had 27 - 30 layers of paint in spots, and I’ve shown it to members of my club and they can’t tell from areas with only a couple of layers of paint. I just can’t help about raving about just how good this paint is and just how easy to use. Plus when using this paint I now run at 10-11 psi with a 0.2mm nozzle set really fine, seems to be the sweet spot for this paint.

Ok tomorrow the other one, this will require lots of masking, for the Dark Green, then the Foliage Green & RAAF DSG, plus the insignias, plus plus the paint around the tail section was badly weathered so the original sky band a red from the tail flash was visible in the photos. Lots of funto be had sorting all this out……..and in between spot touch-ups and clear coating the other one.

Still on track to have them finished by next weekend!

You clumsy oaf!

Sure you'll make it all good again though. Paintwork on the first one is looking great so I'm waiting in anticipation to see you work the same magic on 'Grey Nurse' :)

Old style MRP in glass bottles are ready to paint straight from the bottle.

Rich, your pace is breathtaking, and the result is stunning! That finish is really something extra.

Rich are you thinning those MRP paints or they ready to go right out of the bottle?

as Christer says, straight from the bottle, they're super thin. The nice thing with them is you can do a nice light coat on a wing, then when you get to one end you're already to start from the other end again. You can keep doing this till you're happy with the results. No having to wait for ages for a coat to dry to see if you need to do another on.

As you'll see with my update to come you can go super fast. I can spray a full colour, give the airbrush a good clean, take the model back to the bench (4 steps away, remove masks and re-mask straight away without damaging the paint!

About 5 minutes is all you need for it to be perfectly ok for handling and masking, for clear coating or panel washes, I like to leave to leave it overnight to cure super hard.
