Redboost Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 Hello, this is Hasegawa Tarpon Mk.II kit built as Avenger Mk.II using my own additions (fuselage side windows, rebuilt cockpit, aerial mine in the bomb bay) and aftermakets: Eduard etched (cockpit, bomb bay and flaps), Quickboost exhausts and gun barrels), Aires wheels and Eagle Strike decals. Cheers Libor
turnerdad Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 Love your models, and that's another beauty. Inspirational.
raif Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 oh my goodness gracious! that is what I call modelling perfection
Buzby061 Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 That's a great job as always Libor. Could be 1/48th or 1/32nd. Pete
daz greenwood Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 That is superb. But then anything from the "Iron Works" gets my vote.
mick b Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 Superb stuff as always Libor...mind you it must be really boring knowing whatever you make is going to turn out stunning! For the rest of us its a bit of a lottery! Mick
ChancerUK Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 Lovely work! the panel line defination and lightness of touch with the finish is stunning.
David H Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 WOW!! That is one cracking good build, Libor! Sort of confirms the saying that a well-built and photographed 72nd scale model is virtually indistinguishable from a 48th scale one. I originally thought i was looking at the Accurate Miniatures kit. Just goes to show how the detail gap is being closed between scales. BTW, those Aires wheels are a tremendous improvement. Thanks for posting! david
Ian Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 Unbelievable quality of work in 1:72. Libor you have some serious talent, sir. Ian
Old VG 33 Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 Another winner Libor. I'm looking forward to seeing these models next June Patrick
Navy Bird Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 Very nice work - truly impressive! Which brand and color of paints did you use? Cheers, Bill
stevehnz Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 Nice Libor, very flipping nice, as usual. I've never seen an Avenger in this scheme before, can you let us know what & where it was used(for). Its certainly unusual & striking. Thanks, Steve.
Redboost Posted March 21, 2011 Author Posted March 21, 2011 (edited) Thanks for comments chaps! The colors are Gunze Aqueous, EDSG from the bottle with little off-white and the D. Slate Grey is mixed from H78 Olive Drab (40%) + H32 Field Grey (40%) and H11 White (20%). Regarding the scheme, its 711.squadron machine from RNAS at Crail, 1945. The web sources state that :"the squadron was attached to RAF Coastal Command and used to drop mines at night near U boat bases in the Bay of Biscay. For this job it was painted white underneath and black on the top front of the wings and nose". However, can't confirm if this is reliable information. Anyway, picture of this machine is here Avenger 711.sq Edited March 21, 2011 by Redboost
kev67 Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 Very nicely executed in 1/72 looks a much bigger scale than it actually is.
Vulcanicity Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 Another stunning build: you have this amazing ability to turn out quality so consistently! Beautiful.
Shar2 Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 That's is a beautiful Tarpon Libor. THe work belies it's scale, more like 1/48 than 1/72.
Test Graham Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 Just a bit of history: 711 was a training unit at Crail so would not have gone laying mines. All 700 series units are training squadrons. Previously with Barracudas, 711 formed an Avenger OTU in August 1945. JZ150 previously served with 828 and 848 Sq. The former went out to the British Pacific Fleet so the aircraft is unlikely to have been with it long. The latter carried out anti-shipping patrols in the Channel when attached to RAF Coastal Command from April 1944. I suggest that we see the scheme as a remnant from this time, and the 711 Sq code has been added later. IIRC, the scheme has been linked to Avengers from HMS Queen - one of the CVEs anyway. If Queen, then this would be 853 Sq which did carry out minelaying operations off Norway.

Agree your suggestion that the scheme is a legacy of previous service. See Squadrons of the FAA, 1st Ed, p.345 for pic of an 853 Sq Avenger in the same scheme on Queen in April 45.
Redboost Posted March 21, 2011 Author Posted March 21, 2011 (edited) Thanks to Graham and Seahawk for historical notes! Some asked for the picture of the undersides, so here it goes. Cheers Libor Edited March 21, 2011 by Redboost
