Armstrong-Whitworth F.K.8, 1/48 Copper State Models

Recommended Posts

Armstrong-Whitworth F.K.8 C.3549

My "Big Ack" flown by No.35 Sqn RFC in December 1917 is finished. The impressive number of 1700 units was built of this type.

The kit of the Mid. Type was made by Copper State Models in 1/48, at least in the Premium Edition here, is a little sensation! The engineering and the fit are excellent.
The additions are an REXx exhaust, a resin Beardmore engine, a bigger PE sheet made of nickel silver, a thick PE sheet which provides for example the beautiful AW manufacturer logos, a little decal sheet with metal print and not to forget a brass PE sheet with spare parts (no joke!).

But still, I found small possibilities for scratch-built additions here and there. As usual on my models I added a wooden airscrew. The struts and tail skid was also replaced by real wood.
The box comes very complete, but I used some accessories like RAF wire terminals and some turnbuckles from Gaspatch Models, wicker seat and Rotherham air pump are Eduard parts and the seatbelt (now not visible at all!) is a fabric one from HGW Models.
As I want to have a robust model for exhibitions I replaced some fragile plastic parts with metal and made some small additions here and there.

In case someone want to see more there was a detailed build log on Scalemates.

I dedicate this model to my friend Roland, who recently passed away at the age of 54. Rest in peace.

Now have fun with the pictures!

And for comparison that is the real one. I left the top cowling open to show the beautiful engine. That can be seen on many F.K.8 photos.

And now I'm looking forward to your feedback!

Fascinating modelling! It's difficult to find proper words of appraisal to describe this masterpiece. Perhaps: the original is not as nicely detailed! Nicht schlecht Frank 😉

Superb work again from the master modeller Frank. I really do enjoy seeing your work. I'm looking forward to hearing how this is received in exhibitions.

Another of your outstanding builds in the odd scale which always look as though they are at least twice as large. A very worthy tribute to your late friend. I am sure that you are going to win many prizes with this one.

This is a stunning build!  I am very curious how you got the rib tape to come out as you did - which is fantastic.  I have been experimenting but mine don't look look this good (yet).

Frank,

You did a wonderful job !  Neat rigging and the details !

And I remember, that Copper State Models just brought out this model, in the same time I finished my scratch build  :-))

Please have a look here,  it is the early version though:
