Yet more o' that fancy book learnin' and a dirt-cheap old battleship to practice on...

Just finished reading the 'Battle of North Cape' It is a good read, and demonstrates the huge differences in the culture and capability between the Royal Navy and Kreigsmarine arine surface fleets in the later years  of WW2. North Cape seems to be somewhat lost among sea battles, possibly because it isn't American and in some ways quite an old fashioned sea battle.

Via Abe Books

After buying issues 1 and 4 at bargain prices from Naval & Military Press last week I sought out the rest of the series at slightly higher but still lower than cover prices this week , the launch issue described as second -hand although it appeared brand-new to me while the other issues were brand-new,

These two turned up together this morning, for a tenner each plus three pound-odd combined postage:

I have a couple of FROG Barracudas and the awful Pioneer R5, and I will no doubt feel compelled to build them alongside these far more refined counterparts. Which is why I've ended up with a built FROG SB-2 and a half-finished ICM one...🙄

I was very impressed with the selection of stamps used:

The MPM Barracuda isn't as much as a step up as might be expected. It might be why Special Hobby have replaced it with a newish mould. My MPM one is the donor kit for a Maintrack  resin conversion that has bee sat in my stash for ages.

Ah, good to know. I'm expecting it to fit less well than the FROG one, regardless of whether it's a new or old mould. How Special Hobby manage to simultaneously produce accurate externals and poorly fitting parts mystifies and frustrates me (I'm looking at you, Bugatti 100!)

Caracal Models decal set for the NF-104A and Edwards Test drones in 1/48. Hopefully have it by early next week.

Now I can finally finish my  Chuck Yeager Aerospace Zipper I've been sitting on for way too many moons.

I was struck with the horrifying realisation I’ve never built a Corsair, and then also discovered I have some decals for a postwar RNZAF Goodyear FG-1D on a sheet, so just picked up a Tamiya F4U-1D to build in the mini 14 Sqn. RNZAF project I’m scoping at the moment.

2 airyplane tickets to merrye  olde. I'll be dropping Mum in Norn Iron at the end of March, then spending three weeks gallivanting around by myself. Big plans, hopefully the spring weather is welcoming!

Sorry, it really isn’t something I should have admitted in polite society! I even have a 1/32 Tamiya F4U in the stash but that’s waiting for when I’ve gained experience (and will be an RNZAF example too). I’ve seen the controversy that seems to follow the RNZAF pacific schemes, so thankfully this will be the postwar all over gloss blue Japanese scheme with conventional RAF roundels.

I've built a few F4Us, they're not as much fun as Hurricanes.  First one was the Matchbox caricature, and it's still my favourite (nostalgia, ain't it grand).

/me opens the wardrobe, looking for my Bestobell suit.

I really don't get this "controversy". We New Zealander's do know our Air Force's aircraft,

especially with RNZAF Corsairs.

Our RNZAF Corsairs were stock standard USN Schemes, and served on the same airstrips

as their US counterparts, weathered the same as their US counterparts, and you really never see

controversial muppitism on US schemes.

Granted the RNZAF Pacific roundel did weather differently (due to the paint) but not to a point where the colour is light

blue. I had one foreign muppet tell me once that RNZAF Roundels were convoluted. Convoluted to Who???

I have come to see that people in Model building land use these terms to save face or hide their true ignorance.

There are a couple of well written papers written by New Zealander's (shock /horror) that give a very concise and

expert history of our RNZAF WWII Roundels, that I have read, it's really not that difficult a concept to grasp.

Anyways rant over, I had a discussion with the RNZAF Museum experts on the Roundels used on

the 16 FG-1D's sent to Japan, (as I too are planning a Post War RNZAF 14 Sqn Corsair)

Whilst for all intents and purpose they resemble RAF Roundels, they were termed by the RNZAF

as "Post War" Roundels ^_^

Graham Clayton Author of last Stand Singapore (story of 488 Sqn), his Father Bert served with both

488 Sqn in Singapore, but also went to Japan with 14 Sqn too.

In a discussion with Graham I mentioned that must have been a Bitter Sweet moment in his Dads life.

Graham's book has some great photos and history of the Japan Corsairs, if you want to read it.

Sorry, I didn’t express this the way I wanted to and I don’t really want to derail this thread- you’re correct, the ‘controversy’ is entirely unnecessary and there’s enough up to date information out there to put the myths and misconceptions to rest. If incorrect information perseveres then any controversy isn’t really controversy, it’s just… untrue.

I have a folder full of resources (much is from your forum posting) which I’ll be referencing once I’m ready to start.

Thanks for the note on the roundel nomenclature- I’ll remember that one!

Cheers,

Nick

Did I ever mention I'm a bit of a bookworm?

Second-hand, but chuffed as nuts that the Escort Carriers one I really, really, really wanted is in pristine condition.

All related to kits I've got, of course; there's something about ships that makes me want to find out far more about them than vehicles and aircraft (and yes - I've got more than a few books on wingy-thingies and clanky-tankies). Maybe it's a way of staying in touch with my ancestors. Hmmmmm...:hmmm:

Not modelling related, as I am trying to be a good boy. We have bought a new hedge trimmer. Our previous one was about twenty years old, and when I picked up towards the end of last year, it literally fell to pieces. The plastic case lost structural integrity. The new one was 25% off in Argos and Mrs T had a gift card from when she retired that she keeps forgetting about. What a gift card is not going to go very far with is a new car. We have started looking as we used to have two. An old C3 Picasso, that made to Alison retirement. It had a huge long list of advisory points on its last MOT and was going to be expensive to fix. The Citigo I have, we like, but is getting on a bit and starting to cost. We want something a bit bigger and a bit more go.

If you're not looking to impress the neighbours, have a look on auto trader at the Ford Fusion.

We're both about the same age I seem to remember. It's an old peoples car. Do we care? But as such there are lots of low mileage ones about.

1.4 or 1.6 manual or auto (higher tax on the auto). Comfy, roomy, easy to drive. Basically a Fiesta estate. I bring home pallets in mine for the wood burner!

I've had mine three years, flies through MOTs, it's cost me wipers and a light bulb. It's 1.4 so 44mpg.

Make sure the cam belt and water pump  have been changed. Low mileage but they'll be old and they're hard to get at.

Good reliable cars. The Starlet was a lovely little commuter/shopping car. I loved the Camry.

Older Japanese cars didn't like the salt on UK roads,

I think he's looking for something cheap.

Old Corolla's and Civics etc are used by young drivers.

Small engine, cheaper insurance. It can be double the cost of the car.
