Black Knight
An EU directive which came into force on January 3rd this year bans the use of Isopropyl Alcohol Isopropyl Alcohol is also known to us as IPA and some of us use it for thinning some acrylic paints, or cleaning up. I have some for those uses plus use in my resin moulding At the moment only European Union countries are affected but not GB (UK) As N.I. (part of the UK) is still in the EU IPA is in theory banned here as well see here for one report https://www.theguardian.com/fashion/2022/jan/05/uk-investigate-tattoo-ink-health-risk-after-eu-ban
Giorgio N
Are you sure IPA is banned? My understanding is that inks that contain IPA are banned for use on human skin but IPA itself is not.
Greg B
Considering its use in a variety of industries and medical prep, I cant see it. The inks are the issue, not the thinners.
Sierra Mike Sierra
I think the EU directive only applies to hazardous chemicals contained in mixtures for tattoo inks and permanent make-up, not to Isopropyl Alcohol in general. I just tried and could still order large amounts of IPA from various sources here in Germany - if it is banned elswhere, I could establish a tiny clandestine supply chain, if there is a demand 😇

Black Knight
The title is accurate! IPA is banned I have looked at this thoroughly and the chemical is banned as an ingredient and for use on its own yes IPA is used in tattoo inks but its also used as disinfectant cleaner Just like some other things banned by the EU it may take time for the ban to affect the supply chain https://euobserver.com/tickers/154002
Sierra Mike Sierra
I still believe that the said ban on IPA is limited to IPA being an ingredient of tattoo ink or permanent makeup. If someone enjoys reading EU legalese: https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/HTML/?uri=CELEX:32020R2081&from=DE The reasoning of the ban clearly relates to the protection of people against ingredients in the ink / makeup mixtures that are injected into the skin and are distributed across the body and may cause potential risk to human health. At the very end of the text (i.e. in the ANNEX) you may find the amendments to the EU directive that stipulate the ban and clarify that specific substances shall not be placed on the market in mixtures for use for tattooing purposes, and mixtures containing any such substances shall not be used for tattooing purposes, after 4 January 2022. Therefore, IPA e.g. as desinfectant or thinner for non-tattoo-related colours (like ours) is not subject to the ban. The defense rests, your honor. 😅

Remember the good old days when around here (Europe) only sailors and inmates were tattooed? I vill turn the clock backwards! Step #2 of zis programme vill be a ban on shaved porn actors (in the near future). (more steps to come soon!) Alcohol will remain legal though. It helps ugly people tremendously to reproduce.

So, I’ll see you all the other side, if I’m sent to the naughty step. 7
Mr T
What Heather said is accurate. It was made up for an article written when said person was working for a newspaper. Given the uses of IPA in the electronics and medical industries, I cannot see a blanket ban. The articles' only reference to IPA comes in a quote and implies that the directive is in relation to substances used in tattooing. Not going to make any further comment as I would like to avoid the ire of the mods.

However, it didn’t stop the party I referred to blowing it out of all proportion, like so much else he "reported on" while Brussels correspondent of the Telegraph. Anyway, let’s not wander off down this rabbit hole. This forum is about making models, not scoring points.
