Hobbyboss F/A-18 3 Sqd RAAF

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

What a crazy time for us all to be in- I hope everyone looking at this is well and remains so.

I've just finished the 1/48 Hobbyboss RAAF F/A18C and wanted to share my photos with you all. I started this mid January and so has taken around 7 weeks to complete- I have really enjoyed this build, so much so that I can see many more Hornets in my future.

I'm really happy with the outcome, and have learned new techniques along the way.

Heres what paints and extra I used along the way:

Mr Hobby Aqueous H308 Gray FS36375 for the lower grey

Mr Hobby Aqueous H337 Grayish Blue FS35237 for the upper grey

Mr Hobby Aqueous H323 Light Blue for the tail fins

Mr Hobby Aqueous H14 Orange for the tops of the tail fins

Tamiya XF25 to mix into the H337 for different shades of the upper surface

Tamiya X19 Smoke again for variation in the upper tones

Tamiya X25 and X27 for the Nav Lights

Tamiya Rubber Black

Extreme Metal Jet Exhaust for the burner cans

Extreme Metal Pale Burnt Metal for the rings around the burner cans

Aftermarket:

Model Alliance Decals- World Air Power Update 3

Eduard Steel Belts

Brassin ASRAAMS

Brassin AIM 120

Brassin GBU 38's

Weathering was done using the salt method, Flory Washes and Abteilung Oils

I am aware that the actual bird had the nose strakes- I did and scratch these but couldn't get them looking right so decided not to bother and removed them completely. Apologies to the purists.

Im sure there are plenty of mistakes but im not a rivet counter, I build to enjoy so can live with anything that's not right. It looks like an F18 and that's all that matters to me 🙂

On with the pics:

The fuselage roundels look light blue, is this correct?

They do a bit don't they. They are blue grey in the flesh, think the light might be making them show more blue than they are

Thanks fellas,

@Tony Oliver certainly is mate 🙂 The decals I found quite good, the only problem I found is that the backing is a little thick, its not overly visible once they're on but its definitely there. Other than that i thought they settled really well.

Well the kit does have it's problems but you have made a lovely job of it and your are right to be really happy with the results - it looks great!

Cheers

….i fancy a low vis scheme though

The F18 looks great in any scheme! Ill certainly be doing some more and at some point going for a full low vis scheme too.

Lovely job and the colourful markings are a nice change from the standard drab 3SQN markings (they're busy re-equipping with the F-35A now).

I do like a colourful aircraft, I have to admit. Recently saw that the 18's are being retired for the F35- be nice to see one of those in an anniversary scheme although I guess it defeats the point of stealth 🤣
