Airfix 1/72 McDonnell Douglas Phantom FG.1 - Finished

Yet another small update.

I got the canopy masked up.

On trying a dry fit it seems that the Pilot was a tad too tall in the seat and so had a bit more sanded of the nether regions.

Stuck back in with the second last cockpit piece added, edges painted up ready for the canopy to go on once I've dealt with the nose seam properly.

I also nipped off the ILS aerials from the tail and rescribed the panel lines.

Then had to fill the line where my hand slipped.

Once that dried it was sanded and the proper line cleaned out with the scriber.

As you can see I managed to break off a delicate bit.

No biggie it can be replaced once I've got a bit further on.

Thanks for looking,

Cheers,

Alistair

That is neater than what I managed. Mind you I only realised the lLS ariel's shouldn't be there when I was putting the Ark Royal "R" decal on the fin so it was a quick cut and touch up only. Looking forward to seeing this finished.

Thanks very much, but if you hadn't reminded me I would have completely forgotten.

I would like to make it clear that no animals were harmed in the making of this. :D

Cracking king work

Chris

Thanks very much Chris,

That is very kind of you.

I must admit this one is giving me a little more bother than The Black Mike Version.

All my own fault, I hasten to add.

The nose seam still required some work and was dealt with with a CA/Talc mix.

PPP was then applied to various seams that needed it.

Following that i got the canopy fitted.

And before I forgot again Door 62 was dealt with.

Getting a bit closer to some paint.

I figured it was time for some paint to see what was required.

As I thought the canopy will need a fair bit of blending but i was expecting that.

A bit of work still needed here,

And here,

Apart from that it's all OK.

After dealing with the bits that required some work and a coat of primer.

I'll need to check all this in proper daylight but I think it might be time for some rescribing and then for some colour.

Thanks for looking,

This is coming along very nicely indeed. Good on you taking the time to patiently tidy up those bits in spite of the eager anticipation you must be feeling at the approaching stencil stage.

Andy

Thanks Andy,

You are absolutely right I can't wait to get stuck into them. :hypnotised:

I finally got everything blended to my satisfaction and on Friday ventured out to the garage for some panel lining preshade.

A combination of weather and work has meant it's not until today that I've managed to get some Buff mottling on board.

There should be some proper colour utilised tomorrow starting with the white.

This is looking great. When I've built all the Spitfires, imma build all the Phantoms.

Thanks Tony,

I'll look forward to your Phantoms.

It is still one of my favourite memories from Leuchars, changing the lamp on the Up Section Signal when one took off right over my head and the air rattled in my lungs.

There's definitely not enough of them In this GB!

Thanks,

Very kind but, yes there's always room for more.

It's progressing well. I built one when it first ce out

 And.....

I used all the stencils provided!! It took a week of evenings of 3 hours a session but got there with no hassle

Once sealed in ensuring there was no silvering it got a suitable top coat. I don't  have the model any longer but I look forward to doing it all again.

That's about the timescale for the stencils I'm looking at and I hope it goes as well as yours.

How heavily, if at all, are you planning to weather this one?

Hi Col.

I'm not going to get her too beaten up.

A bit of a wash to pick out some detail and some oil dot filtering to give the paintwork a bit more variation.

Some staining and a tinted final stain coat to try and replicate the dulled down finish at sea.

Cheers,

Alistair
