WW2 Airfield Control Towers

Recommended Posts

Hi,  I'd quite like to scratch build a WW2 Airfield USAAF control tower. Does anyone have and plans references i could perhaps use to scale a model.. 1:72 and or 1:48 scale would be my preferences. I've had a look online but can't see anything suitable..

Cheers

Regards, Andy

I'm sure someone more knowledgable will be along in a minute, but - for which theatre? And which base? Airfix used to do a kit of a WW2 RAF control tower, which I suppose might might be suitable for a some 8th AF bases?

Sadly the Airfix kit doesn't repreesnt any airfield RAF Control tower  . . .

There are the Flightpath RAF/USAAF control tower kits in 1/48 and 1/72. They also a detail set for the Airfix kit, which they too cite "You should note though that the Airfix kit does not portray a truly accurate WW2 control tower.".

I have Flightpath's 1/48 Nissen Hut and details kits in the stash. I have built their Beaverette Mk.3, which is PE and cast metal.

Be aware that even the Control Towers built to ‘standard’ designs were often modified to local requirements.

The plans shared by Mancunian airman are an excellent starting point but depending on how accurate you want to be then period photographs are essential (if they exist)

Good luck

Seen this site?

I built the Airfix Control Tower a little while ago with the Flightpath upgrade - and had a lot of fun - but I was lucky to find it and I think it may be almost impossible to get now.

all the best

Found this if it's any use https://maam.org/tower.htm has some 3D plans for the restoration project.

I saw that many year ago, I presume the photos are of the completed build . . .

I was involved in the Tower at Virginia Beach  . . .

There are laser cut ones on ebay.  No idea what they are like and they may share some of the Airfix accuracy failures

Still listed on the D J Parkins website along with other aifield accessories & buildings (including an alternative, accurate, tower.

A new, accurate control tower would be a great addition to the Airfix range, something like a 12799/41. It would go nicely with some of their ground support ranges and I'd buy a few. One can dream I suppose, but for such an iconic WW2 airfield building, I'm surprised there's not a better kit out there.

To be honest there are not many airfield buildings at all.  I have been building my own in card for some time.  Including a control tower (must finish that though!) a QRA shed, a HAS and more.  There may be some model rail card buildings that could be adapted in 1/72 / 1/76

Doesn't this assume there is/was a standard WWII control tower?  I'm no expert, but I know some were of very non-standard design.  The restored one at Carew Cheriton comes to mind, which is predominately a single story structure.
