Peter Marshall
Started last week, but only started taking photos today. This is the new ICM Dornier Do17Z Work starts with the cockpit unsurprisingly, starting with the port side. I did manage to lose the left half of the instrument panel, so I had to scratch build a replacement using my punch and die set. then work onto the starboard side - at the moment i've just put the parts in place, need a coat of RLM02 over the top Impressed with the fit and detail so far - very nice. Peter Marshall
Today's work - Completed the starboard side Closed up the fuselage - a little Mr Surfacer 1200 required but nothing major Then slotted the gunner / radio operator's seat into place Glazing will commence next Peter
Mike
Peter's Pinkies - starring on Britmodeller since 2007 Looks like a nice kit, and you're doing a good job so far. Quick progress too
ForestFan
Looks good, I've got the Z-10 night fighter so will watch how you get on with the general construction with interest
Peter Marshall
Today's work - started by masking one of the greenhouse panels with Parafilm Then assembled the wing and tail and joined them to the fuselage - needed a little filler to blend in, as the Do17 is a very awkward shape - lots of curves, but nothing major Finally started building up the gear bays and nacelles Peter
Jackofalltrades
Oh yes........looking great Peter,I too have my eyes on one of these, have just brought the Airfix Defiant in 1/48,so maybe next month. In the mean time I shall be watching the progress of your build, and may I say sir,it's looking damn good so far. Peter Marshall
Today's work - fighting with Nacelles and engines first attached the nacelles - I think that next time i'd vary from the instructions, as they were a bit of a pain to fit together. Required some CA and talc and some Mr Surfacer but did eventually wrestle into shape Then next up was building up the Bramo radials Peter
franky boy
Great work Peter I've had this kit on the to do list for a while now. It's good to see its relatively hassle free apart from the nacelles. Looking forward to the rest of the build. James
Silver Fox
I built the ICM Do215 recently and had the same issues with the nacelles. I guess doing multiple version means one size fits none.
Peter Marshall
I will admit I didn't help myself when fitting the nacelles - I finished one stage with half of the nacelles fitted on one day, then did the second half the next day. Doing it in a single session would have been better, and it was only one of the two that had a problem, due to the first side being slightly out of whack. If I did one again, i'd remove the locating pins on the gear bay sides - they seemed to cause the issues, and do it in one go. At the end of the day it was about a .7mm gap at the rear of the port nacelle that I filled with CA / Plastic and is sorted now. Peter
Jackofalltrades
Pete for your information there is a superb book on the Do17Z that's recently been released,I recently purchased it from the Publisher itself, and can recommend it,the tech drawings and photos of the cockpit alone are worthy of it's purchase. It was reviewed on this very forum a little while ago. see link: http://www.valiant-wings.co.uk/airframe-detail-no2-544-p.asp Edited March 16, 2016 by Jackofalltrades
Tail-Dragon
It's good to see a build with this new kit, you're making a lot of progress. Just a quick question, the pilots seat and control yoke appear to be sitting very high, above the canopy sill, in fact. Is that a camera illusion, or are they really sitting that high. I believe (based on photographs) they should be lower. It might be obvious later when the canopy is attached, and to late to modify! Looking good, otherwise. Peter Marshall
Next stage - first fitting the engines Then the lower cowling and cowling ring and the main support Then the rest of the cowling and the air intake and oil cooler. Really like how the cowling has been engineered Then on with the glazing - first the underside cupola The main canopy Finally the nose glazing Should get some primer on tomorrow once all the glazing has dried Peter
UKguyInUSA
Great work so far on what looks like a nice kit. I'm looking for a Do 17 to accompany my He 111 and Ju 88 that were my last two builds. I shall watch this develop with interest. Cheers Martin

Jackofalltrades
Great work on the build Pete,I've got to say,.....the detail of those Bramo engines from ICM look superb,a whole class above the other 1/48 versions of this iconic aircraft, this is much more detailed. batcode
coming along nicely, just a heads up on the decals as I did the do217 not long ago they seem very thick once they lay down but are fragile at the same time,,, even after using micro sol etc you can clearly see the the thickness once dried.... TheBaron
Impressive piece of work, I'll be following your progress on this one with interest Peter. The frontal view of the Dornier's glazing always reminds me of how some German bombers seem to slightly resemble medieval suits of armour in shape and form. Best wishes, Tony
Peter Marshall
Masked off the wheel wells Then sprayed RLM02 over the canopy frames Sprayed a coat of Ultimate Primer @25psi - went on lovely preshaded with German Grey On with the RLM65 Then the RLM70 Finally the RLM71 Sprayed the splinter without masking as i'm going to be doing a winter distemper over the top so it doesn't need to be masked. Peter Marshall
Quick blast today - first some heavily thinned XF-2 White with a drop of buff sprayed randomly over the top to start the distemper Then some Ammo Washable white over the top, then rubbed back with a wet cloth then finally for the distemper some pure XF-2 white in bits The photo's bleach out the subtle differences a bit, but i'm happy with it. Next the Yellow theatre bands Finally for the day a coat of Alclad Aqua Klear over the top Peter
