I got to have a look at the sprues for the up-coming Airfix 1/48 Lynx on the Airfix stand at the Yeovilton autumn model show today. It's nice, but when I asked what the approximate retail price will be, the rep told me between £40 and £50; the Navy variant being more expensive than the Army variant. I was not the only one who asked why it warranted such a high price-tag when compaired to other recent high-profile Airfix releases. The Airfix rep justified the cost by saying that it has a lot of pieces in order to offer the highest level of detail, and I've no reason to doubt him. Apparantly the Navy Lynx will be series 11, while the Army version will be series 9 and that's the price bracket they come at. Sorry, but for me that price is prohibitive.

Airfix series 11 = £39.99

The Army Lynx is on the Airfix web site (not yet in stock ) and is a series 9 kit priced at £27.99.

As the old saying goes ...Dont count your chickens before they hatch.

We will find out the final price near the time of release .

army lynx is series 9, rrp £27.99, navy lynx is series 10 (not 11!) rrp £29.99.

I'm only relaying what the Airfix reps themselves told me today. If you guys know better, then fine. :)

If its good I'll pay the under £30 price, still a lot cheaper than the resin alternatives.

Any photo's of the sprues?

Shaun.

The Navy Lynx is due in the shops in February 2012, the Army version a couple of months later. The Merlin has had it's test shots done and according to the Airfix rep it looks amazing. The 1/350 Type 45 destroyer is due in the third or fourth quarter 2012.

I thought the Navy Lynx sprues showed great promise, with great detail. Internal cabin details looked nice and I thought the blade supports for the folded option looked very fine and well done.

I am looking forward the Lynx's and the Merlin they are at the top of my to get list for next year although i only want 1 of each. Did anyone take any pics?

I'm a bit new to all of this but is it thought a conversion kit to Mk 9 will be made available by someone, and, if so, how long do they usually take to come on the market?

I agree; the Lynx shots looked excellent. The price might be a bit higher than expected but its a lot less than I paid for my Belcher bits one. Also with the level of detail in the kit the need for after market stuff will be reduced and everyone can have a great model for a lot less than buying all the resin required to turn a poor kit into a good one. If you see Hannants are still charging £20 for the Stirling we all built 30 years ago, £29 for the Lynx looks good value.

The new Swordfish was fantastic as well.

Given Airfix's history with the Sea Vixen and the Valiant this means it probably won't hit the shops until Xmas 2012 at the earliest!

Did anyone actually take any pics I really want to see these sprue shots!

That may be so if Airfix are only interested in appealing to experienced modellers who like helicopters. Personally I think it is a shame they can't price them a little lower. I'm not a helicopter enthusiast, but I like the Lynx and might have been tempted if the price was a little lower. If they were able to get close to the price Revell want for their Apache I could consider getting one, but not at £30.

Of course, Airfix must price their kits at the level the Market will bear and which will enable them to recover their costs and turn a profit. They make plenty of other kits I want to buy which are well within my budget. It's just that I fancied having a go at a helicopter and the Lynx might have drawn me into this area of the hobby.

i will have one or two lynxs ..asi see them

evey day in my part of somerset

i felt .. the oprice quoted

may be a bit steep ..but until i see

the whole kit in the box .. i will not

judge airfix too much

i am also very excited about the revell

1/32 lynx .. about £25 ?? now that will be

interesting to compaire

if its as good as the 1/32 hawk .

Hi Guy's, I'm with those who think it is priced on the high side especially if is rumored that the Revell 32nd kit will be around 20 Quid. If it were say 22/24 then I'd buy 2 kits, so come on Airfix (Hornby) lets get our act together cheaper means you sell more and remember we're in recessionary times, so disposable cash is at a premium.

I'm also thinking of the price when the kit arrives here in South Africa, at the current exchange rate of 12.6:1 to the UK Pound it's going to be R360 ish. Sorry, I just went back to 72nd scale!

I'll be interested to see the level of detail/options Revell put into their Lynx and what the retail price ends up being!

From what I could see of the sprues at Yeovilton, a lot of work has gone into the Airfix Lynx's, least not the interior detail, stores, rotor-fold options and the surface detail (rivets and strengthening plates). The Navy one appears to have options for the German Mk.88, RN HMA.8 and Danish Mk.90B, while the Army AH-7 seems to have all the Afghanistan fit (chaff units, jammers, engine filters and MGs) and TOW missile alternatives.

The series numbers puts them at around £29/30.

£27.99 - $44.77 USD

£29.99 - $47.97 USD

Seems a bit steepish to me, but that's just my wallet speaking… :tumble:<_<
