OzH Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 (edited) I picked up a(nother) Phantom for a bargain, at Yeovilton this year. It was one of the Hasegawa FGR.2 boxings, Green and Grey early scheme on the box top. When I got home, I had a look through the other Phantoms in the stash to see what AM bits and pieces I had and decided I wanted to build one - NOW! Looking through them all I decided that I would build the one Revell boxing that I had, (box doesn't look as nice and if I decided to part with them, the Hasegawa kits are worth a little more), which is in fact just a re-box of the lovely Hasegawa kits... I proffed a few bits out of the other box's in the stash and came up with this little lot: As mentioned in Shaun's thread, I'm planning to build her as XV498/U 92 Sqn, Wildenrath, late 80's, as I spent a couple of years there watching these things doing their stuff! I've spent a couple of evenings watching the Winter Olympics tinkering and have so far got to this stage. I've used the Eduard sets, seats and cockpit from the BigEd set, and don't think I'll be useing the Verlinden seats or the Aires cans, the Eduard set takes care of both these area's. The seats are the kit seats with the Eduard etch, I think look great! I recon you could strap a pilot in with this little lot. Edited April 1, 2010 by OzH
coolhand Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 Hi, Build looking great so far, love the seats. Just wondering, is this kit still in production? Cheers
zero Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 ...... Awesome work mate. Stunning. I wanted to see what the big ed Set was like so I'll be watching this with interest. Getting the pit sorted really is the majority of work on these, Dave
zero Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 Hi, Build looking great so far, love the seats. Just wondering, is this kit still in production? Cheers Sadly not! Revell Spooks are now long out of production. the Revell and the Hasegawa (same kit in the box!) just better decals in the revell ones, sell for about £25 to £30 each on Ebay, http://completed.shop.ebay.co.uk/i.html?_n...2&_osacat=0 if you can't get one, the Hasegawa RN version is available and all the bits build a (RAF) FG MK1 (with some aftermarket decals) are there, but the FGR2 has a few differences and therefore you need the FGR2 kit. (Tailplanes being one of them!) http://www.relishmodels.co.uk/hasegawa-1-4...-ark-royal.html HTH Dave
Irishgreek Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 Didn't know it was OOP. I am seeing them here in the US, so will have to pick 1 or 2 up, before they disappear...
AnonymousAA72 Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 Nice....Oz!! Built that one in 1/72 many years ago........
MarkSH Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 I'll be watching this with interest, I think I nearly bought this very kit from Yeovilton myself, however I dithered and it was gone when I went back , luckily, a little later I managed to find the Hasegawa version, tucked away in the back of a box under another trader's table, for only a few quid more They really are nice kits, You've made a great start and so quickly too, I've only managed to drool over the contents and start planning.
Angels49 Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 Tis always fun to watch a good Phantom in the works......I'll be following this one daily...
Lightningboy2000 Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 Verrrrryyyy niiiiiiiice. Those kit seats with the etch look superb. Will be following this!! Martin
OzH Posted February 24, 2010 Author Posted February 24, 2010 Not on the list above, But I have also got the WEEAC Navigator disc on the Phantom, great it is to. One tip that I liked was how to deal with the depth of the intake, I do have some seamless suckers, but was saving them for a special treat... Anyhow, this is what the navigator suggests, paint the ducts on! Not the best photo's, but you get the idea. Works for me! I've done a bit of detail work as well, undercarriage: And empty sidewinder pylon, the original is on the left...
Alan P Posted February 24, 2010 Posted February 24, 2010 I'm surprised that idea with the intakes hasn't caught on more. I just used it for my Tornado and it works really well. If you want to be really clever, use a printed picture of "down the intake" as your blocker. Good details too! Al
Darth Vader Posted February 24, 2010 Posted February 24, 2010 Cheers PHaTNesS a printed picture , simple but pure genius
AnonymousAA72 Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 Got some paint on... Next.... Decals. Great job Oz...but that blue looks very pale - shouldn't it be RAF Roundel Blue?
OzH Posted March 8, 2010 Author Posted March 8, 2010 Great job Oz...but that blue looks very pale - shouldn't it be RAF Roundel Blue? It does look pale, just had another look at the model which looks about right, I think it due to the lighthing when I was taking the photo's. Thanks for pointing it out though...

Thanks for pointing it out though... Yes, I'm sure its fine. I was just comparing it to the picture at the top - roundel blue is of course a dark blue!
denstore Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 Has this kit raised or recessed panel lines? I have a 1/48 Hase Alcock & Brown on its way to the stash, but I thought all these had raised detail. Might get to the build table after all....

OzH Posted March 10, 2010 Author Posted March 10, 2010 After a second and third look at the tail, I decided to darken it up a bit. I airbrushed a thin coat of Tamiya Smoke and I have to say, I think it looks a better! I've also been decalling...... two nights work:
bexwh773 Posted March 10, 2010 Posted March 10, 2010 Oz, Nice to see you working on a Phantom, and this one looks cracking. Thanks for the info on the Big Ed set, I think I'll be adding that to my collection, especially as it does away with the need for any other AM bits. Love the office and the seats, especially as theyre the kit ones Bexy
