Finished yesterday, this is the Special Hobby Kit built as an early Maryland as used by Adrian Warburton. This was originally a French Martin 167, delivered in Natural Metal, the French camoflage was then painted directly over the top with no primer. It was then flown to Gibraltar by a pilot defecting to the Free French, had RAF roundels applied, and was then flown to Malta by Adrian where it had a very short but intersting career. It was heavily used and abused, patched and generally thrashed, and looked like this.

That is a superb build. Bravo. Spending one's day staring down the nose at that cross-hair must have been very tempting for Warburton. He shouldn't have been blamed for having a crack at 'em should he?

I wish I'd asked before, but I remember reading somewhere that Warburton's crew jury rigged a twin Lewis mount for the turret. Anyone know either way?

This is the Fiat G-50 bis of Tentente Furio Niclot Doglio, 352 Squadriglia, 20 Gruppo, as it appeared when based at Gambut, North Africa, in August 1941. Previously, 352 had been part of the Italian expeditionary force moved to Belgium to take part in the Battle of Britain. As well as being engaged in the front-line fighting in Egypt and Libya, the Fiats played an air defence role against raiders attacking nearby ports, including Malta-based Blenheims and Wellingtons.

In early 1942 20 Gruppo, as part of a re-organisation of the famous 51 Stormo, was part of a restructure to prepare for the arrival of the Macchi MC-202 and for operations specifically directed against Malta. His score reaching 7 kills, Lt Doglio was given command of 151 Squadriglia within 20 Gruppo. He was eventually shot down over Malta on July 27th by famous Canadian ace Buzz Beurling, while flying an MC-202. He apparently misinterpreted his wingman's warning signal as he dived on a group of fighters, oblivious to their 'top cover' swooping in from above in classic Malta fashion.

About the Italian pilots Beurling said: "The Jerries are probably better overall pilots than the Italians, but they certainly let the Eyeties do their fighting for them when the going got tough. When we get around to adding the final score for this show I hope somebody thinks of that".

Doglio also held nine world records for altitude and speed-over-distance during the 1930s, mostly set in a Breda BA-88.

Well, for what it's worth my 1/72 Sword Sea Gladiator in Malta Fighter Flight marks. Really enjoyed this build, and would recommend it to anyone. Had a few problems fitting the top wng, but considering it's the first biplane I've made for 20 years that's to be expected! Anyway, here she is . . .

Malta Spitfire Beurling (249 Sqn)

BR128 was a VcTrop Spitfire and was likely part of the Operation Bowery delivery of May 9, 1942. The ferry codes 3-W were retained (normal practice was to remove the number with the lone letter remaining). During those hectic days, many aircraft were placed in a pool from which a scrambling squadron would pick their mounts from those that were still flyable. Canadian ace George Beurling was flying this Spitfire on July 8th 1942, scoring one Bf109 plus one damaged along with a Ju88 damaged. Of further interest, on July 22nd, friend and fellow French-Canadian Jean Paradis would be flying this same mount. He was bounced and shot down while intercepting a morning raid.

On to the model:

kit: Tamiya 1/48 Spitfire VbTrop

AM: Airwaves resin c-wing

Ultracast prop and exhausts

Master machined brass cannon

Finish: acrylic paints, weathering powders

So here she is. 1/72 Macchi MC.202, 378 Squadriglia based in Sicily. Italeri kit with a Small Parts resin interior, decals are a mix of the kit ones and Tauro decals. The kit is an absolute dream and would be great without any extra work.

I really, really enjoyed this build and as my first GB here I had a blast. Here's to many more.

I hope I'm not late...

Here's my contribution to the MALTA GB.

BF109F-4 "Black 1", flown by Hauptmann Kurt Brandle, Staffelkapitan 5./JG53, Comiso/Sicily, Feb. 1942.

(Ref. Osprey Bf 109 Aces of North Africa and the Mediterranean Pg.47, colour plate 42)

I'd like to thank for MODs for host this GB, I had a lot of fun. It's the second model I've completed since the arrival of my two young kids - almost three years ago.)

Enjoy...
