dswoofie Posted October 11, 2008 Posted October 11, 2008 OK, here's my latest creation... the Italeri 1/48 SH-60 done in the colours of the JMSDF for the 'Unofficial JASDF Group Build' Well, I only found out it was JMSDF when I finished... and Mike said I could play at the start, so It was rather a trying build, but it was worth it in the end. It gave me many trials, and most of them I overcame, and I'm REALLY happy with the final result. If you're interested in the build thread it is HERE Anyway, this is a bit picture heavy as I'm so happy with it I went a bit overboard on the number of shots What is a little dissapointing is that the subtle shading wasn't really captured by the camera. A little more playing with it and I could have sorted it out, but I didn't really have the time. Here goes then! And here you can see the exhaust staining that I applied using a really thinned mix of paint. First time I'd ever tried this and I was really pleased with the result. These helo's tend to be really clean, so this is about as dirty as they get Could have been really easy to overdo it, especially on white!, but I think I got it right. It doesn't show up too well in the shots, but looks much nicer in the flesh. The dirtying shading on the ends of the rotor and tail rotor blades doesn't really show on these shots either As noted in the build thread, it was my intention to display it on a base. So I made up a quick MDF base and painted it in a light grey. The I drew up the artwork of the deck of the DDH-141 Haruna, and printed this up to make it a bit more interesting. Quite an easy thing to do, and I think it adds something to the display of the model. Here's the base... And then a few shots of the SH-60 placed on there. The last 2 shots show it in it's normal display mode with the rotors semi folded. I've left them loose so that it can be displayed in either fashion. And there we go! Hope you like it, and please feel free to leave comments or constructive criticism on it! Karl.
Seamus Posted October 11, 2008 Posted October 11, 2008 That's a cracking Seahawk Karl, especially considering the trouble you had with ill-fitting parts during the build, top stuff matey That's a quality base as well
CPNGROATS Posted October 11, 2008 Posted October 11, 2008 GREAT looking copter and base...very nice presentation..!! Cheers, ggc
Peter Marshall Posted October 11, 2008 Posted October 11, 2008 Really nice on what has been a difficult build. Peter
Muller Posted October 11, 2008 Posted October 11, 2008 Lovely job on that, the exhaust stains are great, the paint looks a bit discoloured from the heat, like the top of my toaster oven! The base is cool too. With the rotors folded back it looks like it might be about to transform into a large robot!
AnonymousFY21 Posted October 11, 2008 Posted October 11, 2008 Nice karl. Well worth the struggle. rich
F-32 Posted October 11, 2008 Posted October 11, 2008 Very nice indeed, love the base and the folding blades.
Daniel Posted October 11, 2008 Posted October 11, 2008 Karl, Very nice build of an unusual subject. Any chance of a little more detail on the base though, as its not covered in the build thread. Did you simply print the deck onto (norma/photo) paper using an (inkject?) printer? Dan

Dan Yes, the deck was all done in photoshop and then printed onto matt photo paper and attached to the base. Karl.
Deanflyer Posted October 12, 2008 Posted October 12, 2008 You're right Karl, the photos don't capture the subtlety of the shading very well, do they? Having just seen this in the flesh I can vouch for the fact that the tonal variation across the airframe is spot on in my eyes, as are the exhaust stains on the rear fuselage and rotor tips. Not easy to achieve with a basically white colour scheme. The base just sets it off a treat... Nice work mate. Cheers, Dean
Stebos Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 Very spiffy indeed and the base is excellent. Did you judge the markings by eye or have references with dims etc?
Guest snipersmudge Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 Well done karl, turned out very nice indeed. i especially like the base you produced very professional and it sets off the seahawk to a tee!
AndyL Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 That's a great job Karl - love the base too. Excellent work.
dswoofie Posted October 13, 2008 Author Posted October 13, 2008 Very spiffy indeed and the base is excellent. Did you judge the markings by eye or have references with dims etc? I used photo references, and also the plans from a Japanese ship kit that had a Seahawk drawn onto there. Took some doing to get it right though! Karl.
Tizzy Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 Very nice.On the close up photos i can just make out the subtle shading on the panel lines and it looks spot on.I bet it looks great in the flesh.
Zed one Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 Love this build mate well done, now Ive got somthing to aim at
Tim B Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 Awesome Jobbie! Nice chopper too. so clean mmmmmm
Romeo Alpha Yankee Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 (edited) Great build Karl! The base looks excellent! And sets the model off nicely. Can I ask what you printed the deck graphic onto? Paper or decal film? Edited October 13, 2008 by TrojanThunder
