Spence Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 (edited) Hi Everyone! Here’s the new, Great Wall Hobby Devastator, that I’m building for an upcoming issue of MIS. Having been so widely discussed, I thought that you would like to see it under construction, check out the detail and how it goes together. Construction up to this point has only taken a few hours such is the ease with which it goes together. Indeed, the design is so well thought out that the shot of the virtually complete airframe is included, because it has been assembled to that point without glue! Hope you like it. arnobiz Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Pity I don't do 1/48th because it definitely looks like a bloody fine kit, thanks for sharing! Arnaud
Smiffy Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Very interested to see this. I think I may have to get me one of these.
Bullardino Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Looks very promising. My wishlist has now grown up another line
Enzo the Magnificent Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Dammit! I was hoping I could avoid getting one of these! The Airfix Devastator was one of the first kits I built properly as a young lad. I was very happy with it and have always had a wish to build another. Looks like this is it. But I would have to build a yellow wings scheme. I'll be keeping an eye on this one!
Jon Kunac-Tabinor Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Damn it Spence - will you stop distracting me from my modelling with these ridiculously seductive builds of yours. No glue? PAH I have fond memories of the Monogram model, so a yellow wing or stripey tailed one of these might be in my Mystic Megs.. No glue? really?.... Cheers Jonners
Graeme Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Boy, are the good peeps on a certain other modelling forum going to be upset if this is a good, easy and accurate build... Will get one at some time as its such a distinctive plane, but will want to do one in the only true USNcolours - yellow wings! Graeme
Enzo the Magnificent Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 No glue? really?.... Yeh... that's just showing off!

sammy da fish Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Whow what a kit, just think how the hobby has moved on in ten years. Again Whow Another one to add to the loft insulation Simon Fisher
gingerbob Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Boy, are the good peeps on a certain other modelling forum going to be upset if this is a good, easy and accurate build... See for yourself Link to build. Some of us peeps are some of those peeps, so let's not feel too superior. bob p.s. I only see one problem- it's still "just a Devastator"! p.p.s. Good presentation so far, thank you for sharing it on both channels, Spence.
Ale85 Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 seems to be a very nice kit!! i have the old glorious Monogram kit and i think i will build it! ciao Ale
BushBrit66 Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 (edited) Spence it does look nice. The extremly similar layout of parts & engineering shows how right MG got it in 74. Its a shame that there are bulkheads under the consoles where they were in fact shelves. Can be cut away as in the MG but with modern technology you would have thought they could have done it. Couple of questions Is there stringer detsil behind the consols on the fus halves? On the MG kit its all there waiting to be revealed Is there a single .30 cal set up for one of the other squadrons at Midway or AN other machine in this boxing? Is there the Nordon bombsight included along with the bombadiers couch? (also in the MG) It really does look nice and I will get at least a couple. However as with the P-61, It does not render the earlier kit obsolete, it offers an alternative in line with the current fashion. A couple of other points, I do not think there were shoulder straps used on these early machines and they seem to have copied the AMD markings for Gays machine. The Fus probably had a larger roundel and just T-14 This info comes from the Torpedo 8 colour film shot a couple of weeks before Miday in mid May. Its on youtube and worth a look (I need to alter my MG model to reflect this info) Great Build!! Edited January 22, 2012 by BushBrit66
Steven Eisenman Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 Let us know the results when you glue wing to fuselage, as there appears to be a small gap, and given the wing surface....sanding! filler!. Love to see the outer panel mated to the inboard wing to see the hinge cover size. Monogram had them way TOO BIG!

Monogram had them way TOO BIG! One for Steve – I hope that these images well show how well this kit fits together, and how in my opinion, there is just no comparison with the rather ill-fitting Monogram kit! The extreme close-up of the hinge for the folding wing reveals some very small gaps, but they are nothing that a little PVA won’t solve. The small metal piece BTW, is for the hinge. Hope these help! Spence
Mike Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 Looking good Spence... can't wait to see one of these myself
Spence Posted February 2, 2012 Author Posted February 2, 2012 Hey everyone! Here's a quick update on my Devastator, showing off the completed cockpit. This has been painted a weathered using Lynn Ritger's information (that I sourced from the Web) and although some of the details are perhaps not the right colour, I'm pretty happy with the way it looks. I hope you like it too! Spence
shark 64 Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 Very clean work. I love it. Flawless silver work. Oliver
Mike Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 We got our review sample yesterday afternoon, and it looks like a nice kit alright
