Here are some pictures of my completed 1/48 Airfix Tornado F-3.

The cockpit has been replaced with one I've scratch-built and the seats and landing gear struts are white metal replacement items from Aeroclub.

That looks t'riffic. :speak_cool:

I really like the look of the F.3 and you just don't see that many built.

You've done a grand job there. ;)

Is it a 'nado? :innocent:

That's a very clean F.3 Not one you see modelled often (or at least I've not seen it modelled often). Is Airfix the only option for a "long-nose" in 1:48?

S'very good btw ;)

Italeri did an F3 although it seems to be increasingly hard to find.

Outstanding work Karl, you seem to have disproved the usually held theory that the Airfix is a crap kit not worth bothering with. It may be crap but it looks like it is worth the bother.

Very nice, I like it a lot.

How did you find he build, are the horror stories justified. I ask as I have one in the pending pile but it never quite gets onto the bench as I think its going to be lots of bother and could do with a couple of "fun" builds.

Very nice. Clean build there.. Tough kit but worth it in the end.

I had a go at it a while back. was my first go at rescribing. overdid it a wee bit. could have used a little bit lighter panel wash too!

There are a few issues with this kit, mainly that the cockpit interior is wrong (it's for a GR-1, not an F-3) and that the fuselage has engraved and raised panel lines on the upper and lower parts and this looks pretty odd, leaving you with no other option but to re-scribe the whole model or at least the sides of the fuselage.

If you can get past this and you don't mind doing a bit of butchering to get the intakes on then you should find that the rest of it goes together just like any other model kit.

Lovely Tornado Karl :worthy:

but what really impressed me is the fact you managed to build it so the wings move as well as the pylons....exceptional!!! :analintruder:

The mounting pins on the pylons were replaced with short lengths brass rod, I cut off the existing pin and drilled out the top of the pylon to take the largest diameter brass rod that would fit.

I then matched it up to a re-drilled hole in the wing.

This gave me a nice tight fit for the pylon that was movable yet sturdy and durable.
