Airco and De Havilland - from stick and string to the jet age! Chat

Recommended Posts

Well we’re more than a month in with another two plus months to go. Forty two build threads ( is that significant I wonder) and five completed builds so all told a pretty good GB so far.

I’m even close to catching up on my self and getting stuck into some serious Dehavilland construction ( end of the month at the outside, Reconaissance, corsairs and  a C47! and I’ll be all over it)

Seven completed builds in the Gallery.

I’m getting closer to DaHavilland country. Both my Lysander and my Freidrichshaffen are nearly ready for paint.  I may or may not break out the Roland and the Halberstadt but the Corsair and the crusader should get in the bench soon.

A question for the Mosquito aficionados, what’re the visual differences between a PR Mk IV and a PR Mk XVI? I’m trying to work out what alterations (if any) I’d need to do to a Mk IV kit to build a Mk. XVI

The Mk IV has single-stage superchargers while the XVI has two-stage superchargers.  You would have to eliminate the intake under the spinner on a XVI as well as using different exhausts.  The IV nacelles may be slightly shorter at the front, but I'm not sure about that.

Edit:  I have just compared the nacelles on a Tamiya B.IV to those on an Airfix B.XVI.  The XVI nacelles are 3mm longer at the front.  However, be aware that I am comparing kits, which may or may not be accurate, rather than actual data from prototypes.

Well between Ill health and my musical projects taking my attention I’ve missed the end of the Sluf GB and hadn’t even started my entry for the loaders GB, which except for Wallace and Grommit leaves me all caught up with my GB’s and means that from now till the end of the GB I’ll be focusing on my five DH builds :)

Question for Vampire fans, I've changed my build into a Swedish example so am looking for any reference shots of these in Sweden in the late 40s or early 50s that might show details of the support vehicles they used.

I havw several shots of Vampires in the UK attached to accumulator trolleys that look identical to those in use in the mid-40s, but not sure if these ever made it across to Sweden.

Many thanks

Just about a month left and we’re going great. From today I’m going to focus on my DeHavillands as I’m definitely behind on them so the Mossie and the DH2 are back on the bench.

I think we’re having a great GB. I’m about to get DHing in earnest as I’ve finished Wallace and Grommit, missed the carriers and crusaders GBs so I don’t have any builds for any older GBs ( if that makes sense)

We have some three weeks left. I know I wouldn’t say no to a two week extension, anyone else feel the same?

A two week extension would be great as I’m struggling as it is.

Sounds like a plan. I can make a lot of struts in 2 weeks.

I just spotted that this extension was a thing on Rob Lyttle's Comet build & while I might have made it without it, having made some decent progress with my Aeroclub Venom build, I'm being snatched away for this next weekend,. The youngest had a bit of a melt down due to assignment pressure & being ditched by a young lady & it was deemed necessary for Mum & Dad to go & make calming noises to him, probably while buying him an expensive meal out somewhere. :( It seems like gritting your teeth & getting on with it has dropped out of fashion these days.

So with two and a half weeks left we have over fifty build threads and twenty one gallery entries. So one last push to the finish.

I’m definitely going to get the DH 1 & 2 over the line as well as the mossie and I’m hopeful that I’ll get the DH4 and 9 done too. Mostly because I’ll be home alone for the weekend as SWMBO is going abroad to visit relatives and Junior is working and off socialising with her friends too.

So it’ll be modelling, music and (probably) takeaways for me for a few days, thank goodness the dog won’t talk….

Only one and a bit weeks left. I know I’ve somewhat lost track of the time and might be putting quite a few DHs into the next KUTA ( ouch) between my health, musical projects and RL commitments I just haven’t gotten the bench time.

I’m going to try to get the DH1 & 2 over the line, but after that chances are slim to impossible that I’ll get the Mosdie, the second vampire or the DH4 & 9 even progressed let alone completed.

Ho hum time to rationalise my WIP and probably stick to one build per GB from here on.
