blimp Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 (edited) first off , the Mil resins sopwith schneider . to be reworked into Tabloid number 168 . no , it isn't started , the fuselage , wins and tail plane come as one piece (the original kits floats , engine and prop went towards a friends build ) - all in a rather fetching shade of turquoise resin Edited February 2, 2010 by blimp
Dave Fleming Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 first off , the Mil resins sopwith schneider . too be reworked into an RFC Tabloid no , it isn't started , the fuselage , wins and tail plane come as one piece (the original kits floats , engine and prop went towards a friends build ) - all in a rather fetching shade of turquoise resin I thought I was the only one who stll had one of those!!
blimp Posted January 31, 2010 Author Posted January 31, 2010 hi dave - yours is about to double in value then ! seriously , it's a nice little kit really , shame about the cockpit area . i'll need to do something about that . . . .
Iain Ogilvie Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 Excellent choice of subject - looks like a nice set of castings! Iain
blimp Posted January 31, 2010 Author Posted January 31, 2010 this is the ardpol Morane - very , very nice . like most of their stuff . i'm a bit peeved that it wasn't cast in 'cream' resin though , like it is on the website . it would have been easier to just paint some structure (in cream ) on the undersides of the wing etc. and get that elusive 'see through' effect . never mind . i won't be building it anyway . i have a cunning plan , involving an old 'hanger queen' + some wing ribs from an Eduard Fokker E111 stripdown , lots of brass wire , bits and bobs and good old swearing . . . .
blimp Posted February 1, 2010 Author Posted February 1, 2010 (edited) but back to the tabby , feeling like a cheat with such a simple build ,as it only really needs a new undercarriage , engine and prop . i've thrown caution to the wind and decided to bling the cockpit . so tonights delights consisted of a vigorous nose picking session . . . . TRA LAH ! i now have a basic floor and instrument panel . . . i'll thin the sides a bit more and add some structure , according to this (german ? of #168 ?) drawing , the wing warping control column is a plain 'stick' not the steering wheel affair of the twinseater or aileron types . a small wicker seat , instruments , floor and a rudder bar all to go in a square centimetre . deep joy . but first i must throw some primer at it , the colour of this resin is giving me the heebie jeebies . you lot are lucky that these pictures are done under artificial light , you really don't know what you're missing . blimp Posted February 3, 2010 Author Posted February 3, 2010 'afternoon my loveliies , i just had an interesting morning in A+E . at work the sleeve of my overalls decided to attach itself to a spinning shaft pulling my wrist and arm down between the job and the toolpost , result damaged tendons , sprained wrist and elbow and loss of some squidgy stuff . luckly nothing broken . overalls are only fit for rags ! it hurts now , even with the injections etc . back to the specialist on friday . so left handed modelling only for a while . . . poo .
AnonymousFO98 Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 EEEEEEEEEEEK! that sounds and looks not good just glad it wasn't even worse! get it well again soon please Mr. Blimp

T-Tango Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 Hope everything is OK with the arm, but there again anything to duck out of the GB.
blimp Posted February 3, 2010 Author Posted February 3, 2010 (edited) thanks folks , yes it could so easily have been worse . it just shows that after 30+ years in the game it can still happen . as for skiving , i'll be keeping my extra grumpy eyes on the lot of ya ! Edited February 3, 2010 by blimp
blimp Posted February 4, 2010 Author Posted February 4, 2010 i thought this build was going too well , never mind . - the last bit i did before i nobbled myself . . . . . . . was to add a plasticard ring to remedy the schnieders larger opening . this also gives the combing edge a better 3D impression . it will be sanded down and the hole tidied up. the seat is an Eduard one from a camel , it's a wee bit big but o.k. a studded cushion and a lap harness will busy it up nicely .
AnonymousFO98 Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 (edited) Looking sweet Blimp how's the arm? hope it ain't too sore Edited February 4, 2010 by walrus
Robert Stuart Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 The tabloid is looking good, I just hope the arm is better soon
Col. Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 Nice work on the Tabloid cockpit. Nasty work on the arm. All I can say is thankfully you got off lightly in the circumstances, small comfort I know but you were lucky. We'll look forward to seeing your progress as you recover.
ollieholmes Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 Ouch the arm sounds painfull but it also could have been alot worse. Take your time recovering and i look forward to seing some progress later.
blimp Posted February 5, 2010 Author Posted February 5, 2010 (edited) no modelling today , but the doc has poked about with the arm ( removing a splinter of steel , new stitches , splint and more tablets ) it's still sore but the swelling has eased and i can move my fingers but not the wrist . after that funfest i cheered myself upwith a run over to RAF Hendon , guess what ? the Graham white hanger was still open - for ten mins . sooo . . . . ( click on the picture for a quick slide show ) and it so just happens to be the a/c i'm building . lucky coincidence eh . ahem . Edited February 5, 2010 by blimp
blimp Posted February 10, 2010 Author Posted February 10, 2010 (edited) it's no good . i can't mooch about all day . again . the digits are working now , very sore and with little grip but i did a bit ! i increased the corner radii of the elevators , they were too pointy . reducing the ribbed effect and then sharpened the outer edges a little to get the frail look of the original . then snapped one off out with the cyno . another brief rub down and then time for some primer to see how things are shaping up . sooo oft out to the bunker . bugger . where did this come from ? oh well , pitter patter , rattle rattle , ouchy ouchy , squirt squirt , pitter patter . . . first coat , the combing and the broken tailplane joint will need touching up (expected really) but i can see it as an aeroplane now . I'M BACK ! . . . . evil laugh , exits stage right . . trips over . . . Edited February 11, 2010 by blimp
HOUSTON Posted February 10, 2010 Posted February 10, 2010 blimp... I am sorry to hear of your accident... you were lucky that nothing more serious happened... Or was it that you wanted more meat in your sandwich...ahhh Just teasing you..Get well soon..and secondly I have never seen anything like the model as shown WOW !!! I look forward to that build from you.. HOUSTON
blimp Posted February 11, 2010 Author Posted February 11, 2010 no probs H , i like this kit a lot . it's real quality , i'd buy another if i could find one on with the saga - here , i've fitted the upper cowling , smoothed out the combing , scored some lines to represent the wing transport joints , same with the top plane . then i drilled and cleaned up the open panel at the sternpost where the tailskid goes no , i havn't forgotten about the empty cockpit or non existant firewall , that's deliberate . there's method to my madness . . . .
Robert Stuart Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Nice progress - - and good to hear you are using your hand, can you call this physiotherapy?
blimp Posted February 11, 2010 Author Posted February 11, 2010 (edited) - yes mate , modelling is the best therapy right now . it's gentle excersise , keeps the mind occupied . it's getting a bit hard to concentrate now though , tiredness is the thing , i've averaged about 4hrs sleep a day this week , i need a good 'crash' - BM should be made available on subscription i reckon ! Mike Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Just stumbled across this one... what on earth happened to your mitt? Looks like a pretty close shave... glad to see it's not stopped your project
blimp Posted February 14, 2010 Author Posted February 14, 2010 (edited) two weeks into the GB now and i'm getting a bit peeved now , friday was a washout , the aches and soreness meant even touching things was a no no . saturday was better and i managed to zonk out for a while . no building done , but i did a bit of experimenting - the metal areas on many sopwiths have a 'engine turned' finnish which is bit of a problem (in any scale , a right %*! in '72 ) so i got out the 'ol baremetal foil and RB riveting tool . . . . the matt aluminium had the best effect , keeping the tool passes as close together as possible , and doing one panel at a time i think this could work , it takes on an alarming appearence of 3d chainmail but don't worry . just press it down again and the effect become very subtle . going over it with a foam nail buffer flattens off the surface even more . this photo is of a peice applied to a humbrol paint tin . it looks much better in real life - that crease is actually on the label underneath - riveting on the sheet , transfering it onto the job , then buffing seems to work best . on the plus side , if not happy , just peel it off and have another go radial cowlings are another kettle of fish , but i have a cunning plan for them too . . . . .
