This pic sent me down a rabbit hole when I realised 131 was using the same links on both sides. Maybe Bovington only had tracks for the one side. However I learned something new today, the manufacturers intended to have both right and left track links, but they quickly dropped the right links and only used left track links after the realised the crews only wanted to have to carry one type of link. According to https://tiger1.info/EN/Tracks.html.

Oh well that’s made my mind up, one less job to do in the future.
Keeff
I'm glad the armour is smooth .... I'd need alot of texturing material for the 1/16th Tiger otherwise! 😳 Keith 😁
Longbow
Looking at photos of Carius’ 217, Takom does not supply the vertical front hull plates, with the missing Zimmerit. I’m wondering how easy/hard it would be to scrape off the Zim on the Takom kit. Ron Volstad seems to depict the areas correctly, for the most part. Right of the drivers vision block has practically no Zimmerit left, at all. I have not posted the actual photos, as I’m not sure who owns them. Not rough at all Most German armour in WW2 was hardened by heat treating which means a good finish but also makes the armour crack easily unless great care is taken. There are other methods such as rolling the plate which gives an uneven surface much like the turret is showing. There was/is a very good reason why only a few companies can do armour plate against the many others who do general stuff. Get into special steels for anything and you're back to a handful of suppliers.
Keeff
So, I had a look in the boxes .... and took the pictures from the Otto Carius version .... these are the actual parts in the kit, which are identical in all 3 Big Box kits Note the part on the left looks like the Carius version.... And the lower plate for reference .... Keith 😁 Edited March 10 by Keeff

Notice the missing Zim, and the overpainting in the camouflage colors.
Keeff
That's alot of missing zimmeritt! 😲 I still think that with some careful use of the knife, this can be replicated. The zimmeritt profile on the moulding is quite thin, which helps! Keith 😁
Kelscale
I wonder if this new Villers Bocage edition RFM 5101 release will be available and obtainable before the GB finishes? https://www.scalemates.com/kits/rye-field-model-rm-5101-tiger-i-late-production--1524299
Keeff
That doesn't look much different to the Takom late version .... which I'm sure has a 'Normandy 1944' scheme .... Keith 😁

Jasper dog
12 hours ago, Keeff said: Or you could just finish that Churchill! 😎 Helpful as ever! I doubt I'd be allowed it's more than 25% built.... I've built an RFM Tiger, lovely kit and have at least 3 more but I fancy the new Normandy boxing, bound to be an improvement on the ancient Takom kit being bandied about . However, I'd never complete that in the time available and be able to barrack fellow builders. However I have an idea... 1
