malpaso
Can you have too many Spitfires? The conventional wisdom is no, but I wonder… Since returning to modelling I have built 1/72 Spitfires from AZ, Airfix, Eduard, KP, Revell and Frog, four of them already this year (out of eight completions in 2018 so far). There are three needing MU attention for Cat C repair: 2x Airfix 1x Revell The stash contains quite a few just in 1/72: 1x Academy 17x Airfix 2x Aeroclub conversion fuselages (okay that knocks out two of the others in theory) 5x AZ 10x Eduard 3x Heller 5x KP 1x Frog 1x Fujimi 1x Hasegawa 1x Italeri 1x Matchbox 2x Sword 1x Xtrakits But there’s also a few in 1/48 – 3x Eduard & 1x Academy; 1/32 - 2x Revell and 1/24 - 1x Airfix. And an Eduard 1/144 one in a Czech Air Force group set! That’s several squadrons worth in all. Technically not part of the Spitfire stash are Seafires in 1/32 and 1/48 as well as a 1/72 Seafang. At this year’s (relatively high) build rate that’s 12 or so years supply of just Spitfires or 4 – 5 years if I just devote to the one plane! Actually that doesn’t sound so bad? And when I returned I thought my favourite WW2 fighter was the P-40! Obviously not as there’s only two built and four more in the stash… “Hi, My name’s Will and I’m a Spitfire addict” Cheers Will Edited October 31, 2018 by malpaso
Gorby
Well that's conclusive, I've just voted and it shows 100% in favour of 'Yes, you can have too many Spitfires'. 1
Dave Swindell
@malpaso - nice little collection there, I'm at 150+ and the voting's 50/50, sorry @Gorby , you're just plain wrong! 1
Graham Boak
Of course you can have too many. Each one built, in each of the camouflage and markings they flew in - more than that would be silly. So about 50,000? 2
lasermonkey
150+ Spitfires here too, and there's still several versions which are underrepresented in my stash! Going from memory, I have- (all 1/72 unless noted) Academy Mk XIV x1 Aeroteam Mk 21 x1 Airfix Mk I (old tool) x38 Airfix Mk I x12 Airfix Mk I/II x4 Airfix Mk I (1/24) x2 Airfix Mk I (1/48) x1 Airfix Mk Vb x4 Airfix Mk Vb (1/24) x1 Airfix Mk Vc x3 Airfix Mk IX (old tool) x1 Airfix Mk IX x3 Airfix PR.XIX x1 Airfix Mk 22 x1 Airfix Mk 22 (1/48) x1 Airkit Seafire Mk XV x1 AZ Mk II LR x1 AZ Mk IX civil markings x1 CMK Spitfire Prototype x1 Eduard Mk IX late x1 Eduard Mk 21 x3 Esoteric Mk IX x1 Fujimi Mk XIV x6 Fujimi PR.XIX x1 Hasegawa Mk I x2 Hasegawa Mk IX x8 Hasegawa Mk VI (1/32) x1 Heller Mk I x1 Heller Mk Vb x2 Heller Mk XVI x5 High Planes Seafire Mk II x2 High Planes Seafire Mk III x1 Italeri Mk Vb x3 Italeri Mk IX x2 Matchbox Mk IX x1 MPM PR.XIX x4 Novo Mk VIII/IX x1 Pavla Seafire Mk II x1 Pegasus Mk 22 x3 Rareplanes Seafire Mk 47 x1 Revell Mk I (1/32 old tool) x1 Revell Mk I (1/32 ex-Hasegawa) x1 Revell Mk Vb x3 Smer Mk Vb x1 Smer Mk Vc x1 Smer Mk VI x3 Special Hobby PR.X x1 Tamiya Mk I x4 Ventura Mk VII x1 Ventura Mk IX x1 Ventura Mk XI x1 Ventura Mk XIV x1 Ventura Mk XVIII x1 Ventura Mk 22 x1 Ventura Seafire Mk XV x1 Warrior Mk XII x1 Xtrakit Mk XII x1 along with several conversion sets, such as Vc wings, early PR conversion sets and Paragon prototype conversion sets in both 1/72 and 1/32 scales. I've only got around to buying the one Eduard Mk IX, which looks lovely in the box, but I haven't got around to building. No decent Vc kit as yet, as they're all on the expensive side and given just how many Spit kits I have already, I can't seem to justify it. As you may have noticed, my main preoccupation is with the early models, the I/II in particular. Still the most perfectly proportioned of them all, IMHO. corsaircorp
Hello Dears ! I will ponder my vote in the way that sometimes one can be fed up of Spitfires ! To date, I finished some late marks, 8 if my memory did'nt fail... Still I have 4 or 5 on the Bench and some others waiting in the attic ! As I'm a serial starter, I also have load of builds on their ways ! It's not that I do not like the Spit but sometimes I feel eager to do Something else ! Seafire …. On the other hand, I think that as icomic as she can be… The Spitfiremania push the Hurricane in the shadow ! And that's not fair for the thick winged lady Because she also deserve the title of BoB winner ! IMHO Sincerely. Corsaircorp

I had a real binge of building the new Airfix Hurricanes when they came out a few years ago. Did some tin-wing conversions too. Nevertheless, I think it only fair to restore the balance with a bevy of Spitfires. I have been led into temptation by Xtradecal, and the Eduard Spits are a delight. As are the recent Airfix ones, which I can literally get together on a dull weekend and still get the domestic chores done (I lead a neo-bachelor existence). If I'm really going to analyse this, Hurricanes and Spitfires these days are my mojo restorers or hors d'oeuvres before getting my teeth into something more complicated.
Bonhoff
I'm a bit of a lightweight when it comes to Supermarine's finest, having only started building them a couple of years back after finding some cheap in Home Bargains. Have only built 1/72 PR.XIX, FR.XIV Mk.22, Mk.Vb and a couple of Mk.1s so far as well as a Seafire 47 - There's a Mk.XII awaiting paint too. Still have another Mk.1 as well as Mks II, Va, Vc, VI, IXc, TR9, PR.X, PR.XIX and Mk.22 (To be combined to make a Mk.21) Seafire III and Spiteful. I'd like to think that I'd have scratched that particular itch once I've completed that lot but realise that I don't have either an VIII or a lowback XVI in that list yet.... malpaso
Two hours to go on the poll and it looks like you can’t have too many Spitfires. About 2:1 in favour at the moment. More to the point my 50 or so stashed 1/72 is apparently an amateurish effort compared to others! Cheers Will
