Trumpeter 1/35 British Heli - Its a Chinook

  • 1 year later...

Well Its official.  I've restarted the Wokka.  Cant post any piccies just yet as my hinternet is so pants, I cant upload snaps to Flickr.

I'm looking at the sand filters which are the things that created the mental block that resulted in it standing untouched (but very much loved) for about 3 years .  For those of you with very long memories, or who can be bothered to read this thread, you will find I obtained the engineering drawings from the manufacturer of the Sand Filters in the States, which someone asked me for a copy of then promptly gave them to some character who is flogging them on Shapeways having nicked my drawings and commercialised them.  To say I remain unamused would be an understatement (3 years later), but the good news is his sand filters are pants.  Wrong dimensions and a pretty poor representation of the genuine article (not that I'm bitter or anything).

Anyway.  Rant over.  I am back on the case and will post piccies once Flicker accepts the upload over my pathetic broadband, courtesy of BT.

Very close to wrapping up my second 1/32nd build of a Korean War Spad (Skyraider) to the uninitiated which I will post piccies of later in the week - assuming of course I can upload them.

In case you wondered why I'm back on it - I've had it ripped out of me on ARRSE for years and have finally bitten the bullet to finish the thing.

Happy New Year all and its nice to be back.

Awaits incoming.........

Ah.  They've uploaded.

Sand filters

Right.  The grey ones were scratch built by me. The ones on the ends (front rows) are from Safeways.  Dimensions are wrong, and the shape is incorrect.  Not sure how the lad managed to get it wrong given he had the drawings, but he did.  The three at the back are castings I made.  The filter at the from was cut off one of the castings.

Now the problem I had which caused me to stop work on the Wokka was I just couldnt get the mesh right.  I tried all sorts, and at the time, even considered investing in a 3D printer and some software to do my own - quickly abandoned due to price of kit and quality of output (things may be better now).

The other issue with the Safeways filters is

Sand filters

What should be holes (yes you need holes for a filter to work) are actually a raised pattern that's an attempt to represent the holes, and it just doesnt work.

My plan was to take a .25mm - .5mm drill and drill each individual hole

Sand filters

in this.  I may well still do that.  Until, one of the ARRSEetriat came up with the bright idea of using it to cast an inverse pattern. Now that just might work - the man is clearly a lost genius and was wasted in the Infantry.  Before I resort to that, I plan to have a little go with a drill bit and see what that turns out like.

I shall let you know when I've had a crack at it.

The other irritation I had was the mrs' lad whilst playing football with his mate in the living room (its not that big a house before anyone asks) kicked said ball and smashed a set of rotors.  Fortunately for him, he didnt take the Wokka out or he'd be dead now and I'd be doing a 15 year stint.  He tried to hide it which made it worse.

So I spotted (over a year ago when I was gearing up to restart it) some Welsh lad flogging Wokka Spruces on waltBay - I promptly bought three spruces which I thought gave me to sets of rotors.  Anyway - just opened them (a year later) and..................... 1/48th (or so I thought).  They are deffo off a C-47A ('Nam) and of course the rotors are different as are the engines, so basically that's 36 sheets down the toilet.

Fortunately, I have a spare Wokka kit I can raid, but thats the end of the Mert.

OK so plan A didnt work - cant drill the castting front, so what I am going to do is

Filter

cut the fronts off the Safeways printed filters and

Filter

A lad is very kindly going to knock half a dozen outer and inner rings out for me for the mesh cover on his 3D printer.  Now the down side of this is the mesh covers were stripped off in Afghan and they flew with the bare filter exposed, but I dont think I've got a choice.  I'll have to order some very fine plastic mesh from a coffee filter to make the mesh covers.

Welcome back ...

'tis very spooky: I was wondering this very morning when you'd be resurecting this project !

Thank you.  It's been while.

All I've done in the last couple of years is a 1/32nd Dauntless, a 1/32 Vietnam era Navy Skyraider (on here in Ready for Inspection) and I've nearly finished a 1/32 Korean War Skyraider.  Along the way, my mrs knocked a 1/32 Avenger off the kitchen table just as it was ready to spray the navy coat of paint on...... binned it.  Gutted, and I binned a 1/32 Korean War Skyraider after a disaster with thinners which I thought was a cup of water.......  I've not really done much over the last couple of years.  The Wokka has sat blinking at me for three years basically saying 'finish me'.  Time to get it cracked.

Well I am not going to rak on about the blooming delay here.

Okeydoke I will. 😲

If you'd done this carrying on back in the day it would have been finished for your lad to destroy instead...

Ah maybe it's best you left it.

Hey lads look in here Si is carrying on with the filtersaga again.

Good to have you back sorting god's own helicopter for us.

But does this really spend the end of the MERT in BMLand?

A question Si, have you looked at @The Baron Tony's Sea Vixen thread ( ok transatlantic cable) on 3d printing his pair of Vixens.

It might be an incentive to get the filters reprinted, looks as if recessed holes are possible given a brilliant user.

Hello mate - its been a while.  Hope you are OK in the current circumstances we all find ourselves in..........

Someone is banging out the mesh bits (as per above) for me on their 3D printer.  Should be done today hopefully.

I'll take a view on what the filter covers look like with the mesh in front of them before taking any other course of action.

I'll have a look at the Sea Vixen when I get a mo later today

I don't know how much the said parts are but I found in our Dollar stores in Canada (The cheap store that sell everything! - Trago Mills in Cornwall!) they sell wedding accessories (bear with me on this) and one of the items are little bags about 6 X 4 inches and they are of a very fine mesh, designed for giving away sugered almonds and the like. Crux of it is they are cheap! (or at least in Canada they are) and the mesh is really fine, a bit overscale for 1:72, better for 1:48 but would be better still on a larger scale, I was going to use it for my 1:35 Frelon. Its quite flimsy though but is easily molded round curves. Any way not sure if you can get them readily available over there but thought id mention it

Cheers Bob - I shall have a peep this evening.  On the Spad tonight and waiting for this lad to turn up with piccies of the 3D print for me.

Fingers crossed it works!!

  • 2 weeks later...

Goodness its been a while.  Just re-familiarising myself with where I got to.  I needed a few days break after the last Spad as I've been on Spads for the best part of a year now.

Wokka

The second set of rotors were knackered by my mrs's lad.  Not my favourite individual, so I am going to have to rob my second Wokka kit of parts, which is a sickener as I was planning to do a Mert with it at some point and open up the side.

Anyway.  Made a start with the epic rivets......

Wokka

A lot of filling to do.  I'm using the stuff which I've never used before

Wokka

excess cleans off with alcohol when dry.  If the alcohol gets that far 🙂

Wokka

supervision arrived in the shape of a colour boy, compete with Nato standard.

Wokka

As I'll be binning these, a quick test straighten as rotors are carbon based now so no sag.  Kettle full of water and lets see how we get on.

Wokka

Forgot how far I'd got with these.  The close ups look messy but they are actually quite effective.  I'm waiting for a 3D print of the band to surround the mesh.

Its progress.  First time for about 3 years.  Good to be back on it.  12 weeks to complete is the target, but it will probably turn into 20 weeks......

I have one of these to build and this thread is proving invaluable.

Ta.  Must say its good to be back on it.  I do like that helicopter.

Anyway.  I'm on a mission.

Wokka

For those of you who can remember me constantly banging on about the sand filers,  these are absolutely spot on.  The bloke at shapeways who is producing these from the engineering drawings I obtained from the manufacturer and shared with a modeller who then promptly gave them to some random bloke who is making money from my efforts has not produced a very good reproduction of the filter.  Not that I am mildly irritated by the IP theft you must understand.

These are photo etch filters manufactured in China.  I just need to find what the application is then hunt down someone who uses them.  They are absolutely spot on.

The mesh I'm using on the filter is pipe cleaner.  99p from Amazon for a pack of 5.

Anyway.  I need some of these.

just saying

Hello Terry mate,

Should have the Wokka nailed in 12-16 weeks I reckon.  Still loads to do on it.

Cheers matey

Just had a look at the rotors that I stuck under boiling water and

Wokka again

Its better but I'll give it another shot.  If I cant get it, I will cast the in resin.

Cleaned off the putty with alcohol and all good

Wokka again

It will need a re-scribe but I can live with that.

Next its

Wokka again

.................. This may take a little time
