  1. My third and final entry Airfix's 1/48 Supermarine Spitfire Vb in desert mode. And since the decals are sketchy at best I have a set of Vb decals from Techmod. Let the fun begin!
  2. Something a little ancient from the depths of my stash that deserves to see the light of day. Monogram's 1/48 Hawker Hurricane. Since this kit lets you build any one of 7! versions(box says 5, but there are 2 more as well that you can do). I think for this outing a MKCII in SAAF livery might be out of the ordinary for me, but it is a simple little build . I'll probably make an addition here or there just because this kit was originally more toy than model and as such some detail that's normal today (cockpits and Gear wells) were almost unknown way back then. I think I first built one of these back when Johnson was in the White House, Lyndon not Andrew. I'm not THAT old. I just feel like it. So lets see whats I gots wit dis. The kit decals are definitely old so I'm using Aeromaster for the national insignia and whatever I can scrounge from y decal spares to supplement.
  3. I got this kit for Christmas 2021, yet I had to clear the assembly line before starting it. So here's the progress from December 2022 to April 2023, when I finished the kit. Yes, this WIP is about a finished kit. I thought members may find the build interesting. First, RCAF Vampires had a window on the nose which took me a while to figure out why. It's for a direction finder antenna (DF loop). Canada is a large country after all. So, top of mind for me was how to replicate this window and the DF loop. Test fitting and marking the nose window for the DF loop. IMG_3233 by Wlad Franco-Valias, on Flickr Nose window cut. This was refined a little later for symmetry. IMG_3236 by Wlad Franco-Valias, on Flickr With that out of the way, I could focus on the rest of the build. Jet intake trunks are in. It’s easy to get the boom halves misaligned, like I did. The minor misalignment had to be sanded down. IMG_3269 by Wlad Franco-Valias, on Flickr
  4. Hi all Been working on this rebooting of the old Heller/Smer L4 cub kit. The Sabre Kit offers a J3 Cub and provides the correct side windows for the J3. This is a model of a Flitfire which were called as they were used to help raise money for the RAF Benevolent fund in 1941. The model built here is NC23413(Texas). Built OOB apart from masking tape seatbelts and the wing struts were made from brass rod as the kit ones were both quite bowed, wheels had new covers punched from plasticard. Pushrod tubes added to the engine undersides from brass rod. The model was built to represent the plane after restoration in around 2019. With th addition ofcthe Whip aerial and the upper red beacon. The model has been brush painted using Humbrol Enamels. I did enjoy putting this one together. Thanks for looking in and thanks for the support and encouragement along the way too. Chris
  5. Hi gents, it's my pleasure to share with you my latest work, Gallery models' UH-34 D Sea Horse in 1/48:
  6. Hi folks, been looking forward to this GB for a while! I have an ungodly amount of Israeli aircraft in the stash to pick from: A-4s, F-16s, Spits- even a Vautour. I'll definitely try to get a few builds done here. Starting off with a Kinetic Nesher however as October marks 50 years since the Yom Kippur War- with the Nesher scoring 115 kills during the war. I picked up the Isradecal book on the aircraft and found a great photograph of Nesher '33' of 144 Squadron after a sortie in which it downed 2 MiG-17s. This Nesher would also down a MiG-21 later in the war. I like this aircraft for 2 reasons: 1. It was prior to the identification triangles being applied and 2. It has the red/white rudder markings of 101 squadron who operated it before 144 squadron was formed. I also got the Reskit Shafrir 2 missiles as the kit only has AIM-9s as well as some Eduard remove before flight tags. The decals supplied are fantastic, printed by cartograph and designed by Isradecal. I'll just be using different numbers and the 101st striped rudder from my spares. The kit is essentially the same as the Kfir Kinetic offer which I build recently and enjoyed more than I thought I would. The plastic in this boxing is much softer than the Kfir which is a relief as at times it felt like I needed a hammer and chisel for that kit. Very much looking forward to this build, have a few builds on the go currently but if I give myself a kick I should be able to get them pretty much wrapped up by the time this starts. Thanks for looking in!
  7. Hi all, this build has been a long time in the making. I had intended for it to be a relatively quick and stress-free build but it ended up being a slog at times and sat unfinished for a while. The kit is the 1/48 Tamiya Mk.X and was a breeze to put together, it's a great kit. The decals are the Avalon IAF Beaufighter set and caused me some issues, they were quite thin and the Star of David in the centre of the roundel ended up semi-transparent so the paint job can be seen underneath. Furthermore I can't actually verify that any of the Israeli Beaufighters actually wore RAF day colours but the option was there and I had the Ammo paint set on hand so went for it. The decals combined with a few silly mistakes on my end like using the wrong tail and ballsing up the camouflage scheme in places meant it sat in a box for a while untouched but I decided to just use it as weathering practice and managed to get it looking somewhat presentable so here it is: Thanks for looking in!
  8. Hi, I seem to recall that someone here on BM produced those modified wingtank photoflash thingies for RAF Phantom FGR.2's. I am aware of the Aircraft in Miniature product, but I wanted to try here first. Does somebody know who it was? Thanks in advance, Pete
  9. Hi all. Here's my latest completion, their VERY nice 1/48th Tamiya P-48F Lightning. The model represents White 33 from the USAAF serving with the 39th Fighter Squadron, 35th Fighter Group, 5th Airforce while operating in Port Moresby during 1944. The scheme is one of the options supplied in the box. I created paint masks for the insignia and White 33 on the nose and tail so I could paint them. I would liked to have made them for the shark mouths on the cowls but time was against me as I had to have it completed by last weekend (19/ 20 August) for our state competition. The stencils are from the kit. The embellishments are by way of a 3D Look panel, resin superchargers and etch seatbelts; all from Eduard. The wheels and tires are from DEF models. The top surface is rivetted so I could get some of the nice wear and tear around the rivet heads can be seen on P-38's and the colours are various darkened and lightened shades of OD/NG from Tamiya and Gunze acrylics. All of it over a silver base. I wet sanded the areas around the canopy to get the worn away silver look. I had applied hairspray but I wasn't getting the results I wanted so tried the wet sanding method. The final weathering once markings was applied was with a variety of oils and washes applied in small amounts but gradually layered to achieve the worn OD look. The underside received a similar treatment. The antennae wire is elastic thread. I'm really happy with the final result. I'd recommend getting yourself one, if only to enjoy the wonderful engineering and fit of the kit. Cheers, Mick
  10. Hi all - this is the old Revell/Dragon Focke Wulf Ta 154 kit. Quite a nice kit to build with no major issues and just the right amount of filler to make it interesting Painted to represent an aircraft photographed at an Me262 base at the end of the war - airfield uncertain but I have seen reference to both Lage and Oerlinghausen. (If anyone knows for sure, I'd be interested to hear). Although intended as a nightfighter, this particular a/c (supposedly the third production A-1, identified as 320003) was not put to use in that role and had no radar fitted - and no tactical markings either, which suggests it might not have been used for combat operations. It is thought to have been used as a twin-engine conversion trainer for single-engine fighter pilots making the transition to the Me262. Pictures appear to show the a/c finished in a standard 74/75/76 scheme, but with a very tight mottle (possibly in RLM70) applied over the top of the upper surfaces. Markings applied with some spare paint masks, decals for the hakenkreuz. Hope you like the pics..
  11. So yesterday it was a Ta154 (https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235128710-focke-wulf-ta-154/#comment-4742016) - and today it's time for a Ta152.. I can't see myself building any more of these, as I'm literally running out of viable schemes - and there weren't that many to start with. Anyway, this is 'black 3' of Stabschwarm III./JG 301, one of the aircraft identified in Axel Urbanke's recent research into Ta152 operations. No pics of black 3 are known to exist, so we're just guessing here. I've basically drawn from features of the other known pics of Ta152s and combined them into one. In previous builds I've painted the gear legs RLM02, or 66, so this time they are in red primer (I told you I was running out of ideas). Markings all painted/masked on - apart from the random WNr. Painting the yellow bar was fun..
  12. Hi all My latest and best to date AFV-Tamiya's 1/48 Jadgpanther. Really pleased with how this turned out and it took me a few months of effort! So no excuses of pretty much copying Nightshift's and using his videos as step by step guides (and by writing it's not an excuse means that I'm not using it as an excuse ). So the zimmerit is as per Nightshift, using the Tamiya epoxy putty and cocktail stick approach, although mine's nowhere near as neat! I used the Hauler PE set to boost it a little, some left over metal tracks from my Panther build for the spares and a metal barrel. The camo branches are just seafoam flocked with crushed foam and grinded mixed herbs. Its not quite finished as the commander is still unpainted on the bench but my mind has now turned to the vignette base, which is the fun bit. Going for a bocage scene just before the 3 jagdpanthers from 654 schwere Panzerjäger-Abteilung ambushed the Scots Guards Churchills during Operation Bluecoat. No doubt that will take another few months! And a WiP of an apple tree in the orchard where it will eventually lurk. First attempt at a wire tree but pretty pleased although need to go over some of the bark again to hide the wire twists better. And if anyone's interested the link to the completed vignette is here https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235120521-jagdpanther-on-hill-226/
  13. Finally got round to taking a few pictures of this one after finishing it back in April! Modern jets and RAF are not my normal thing but this was an itch that needed to be scratched. I also wanted to build a machine from either 43 or 111 Squadrons, these being the ones I remember being wowed by at so many Leuchars' airshows. The kit is Revell's boxing of the 1/48 scale Hasegawa moulding which, despite its age, is still a good build. The model was built straight from the box, the only addition being a set of Sidewinders. Just for a change I also decided to add the two crew figures to give a little "life". XV416 did not have a long service life, being lost in May 1975 shortly before the Squadron moved to Leuchers. Fortunately the crew ejected safely. Despite this there are quite a few photo's of the aircraft available on the internet and I was able to use these to help with the painting and weathering, especially the underside which was particularly stained. Enough waffle here are the pictures and I hope you like. As I said, this is not my normal subject so any tips and hints are welcome and thanks for looking!
  14. My LMS ordered in a Dora Wings 1/48 Seversky J9 for me, which I was able to collect yesterday. So far, so good! Got it home, opened the box, admired the plastic - it really is a lovely kit. But unfortunately, closer inspection revealed that Sprue A (fuselage and cowling) is mis-packed - it's actually the one for the P-35 kit, not the J9/P-35A kit. The cowl guns are in troughs, not blisters. A bit annoying as I wanted to do the J9, but it's perfectly buildable and I'm really not bleating. In considering my options, I thought about getting some AM decals for a USAAC P-35. But then I came across the S-2 owned and raced by Frank Fuller. So my question is: what are the differences between the P-35 and the S-2? As far as I know, apart from military equipment obviously, the differences between the P-35 and the S-2 are primarily no dihedral in the outer wings and a lower canopy. I read somewhere that the IP is entirely different as well. Are there any other differences that I should be aware of before I embark on sprue-cutting? I would be looking to model the aircraft in its #77 guise, painted (metallic?) green, i.e. 1938-39 Bendix Trophy races. I know there have been a few builds here on BM, notably the late-lamented Moa with a superb 1/72 Rareplanes vac, and a couple of Williams Bros 1/32 builds (Chris @bigbadbadge - did you build yours?). There are a few photos on t'interweb, but I've not yet found any definitive information. Any thoughts or suggestions are welcomed! All the best, Mark
  15. Welcome to my Italieri HS 126B finished as a machine from 3. (H) 13 involved in the Balkans Campaign in 1941. The kit , I believe, is the ICM moulding and is not without a few faults. These being some vague location issues, brittle plastic (could be my ham fistedness as I snapped a couple of the struts) and the appalling fit of the top deck behind the engine. On the plus side the detail is more than enough, with plenty of build options. The only details I felt the need to add was a set of seatbelts, gunsight and altering the angle of the tail wheel. Paints were my usual Vallejo ModelAir, weathered with a combination of clay wash, oils and a final overspray of Tamiya XF-57 Buff to blend everything in and make it look a bit faded and dusty. I was surprised at the size of the thing as I was building it, bigger than a Ju-87, but quite good looking in it's own way. As ever, tips and criticism are welcome, how else do we improve? Thanks for looking.
  16. PM-M Built a couple of years ago. Made it so that Engines #1 & #2 had removable cowlings by making the Merlin exhaust stacks removable. Now that I am using Imgur with some success Links BCC. Thought i'd share these images:
  17. This Meteor night fighter was delivered to the RAF in 1954, initially to 25 Sqn at West Malling before being transferred to 85 Sqn in 1958. The aircraft remained in RAF service until 1961, when it was then placed as a gate guard at North Luffenham. Fortunately, WS776 still survives to this day and can be seen at Bournemouth Aviation Museum. This was my first attempt at a Sword kit, and overall I was quite impressed. It’s obviously not new tool Airfix standard, but it’s a very buildable kit with a bit of care and filler. The instructions aren’t great in that the parts aren’t numbered on the sprues, just a diagram in the instructions. Some of the stencil decals have duplicated numbers and erroneous placing in the instructions too, and the black wing walkway decals are very thin so great care is needed. Overall though, a thoroughly enjoyable build of quite a rare type. Mostly built oob except for a few wire aerials and cockpit tubes, plus Airscale instrument panel decals.
  18. Hi Please see attached some photos of my recent spitfire, built from the excellent Eduard weekend kit, with some spare photo etch added. The decals are from Vingtor, representing an aircraft from 332 squadron, 1943, being flown by several Norwegian pilots. Not much to say about the kit, it goes together like a dream.
  19. Presented here is my Tamiya 1/48 Mosquito, representing HX914, SB-O of 464 squadron RAAF in December 1943. HX914 undertook numerous intruder operations over Europe. 464 Squadron was an article XV squadron of the Empire Air Training Scheme. Although technically an RAAF squadron, the squadron’s personnel were drawn from numerous countries, with Australians comprising up to about 50%. The squadron flew mosquitos from June 1943 to September 1945. My vignette includes two crew figures. One is represented in RAF uniform blue, the other in the deep navy RAAF uniform blue. RAAF aircrew wore RAAF uniforms while serving in Europe. Black and white photos clearly show the difference in tonality between RAF and RAAF uniforms. Crew figures are from Djiti’s Productions and Barracuda. I have presented the model without external aerials. Most photos of 464 squadron show the mosquitoes like this. The model has minimal weathering, again as per photos of 464 squadron. Decals are from the DK Decals DH.89 Mosquito used by Australian pilots in the RAAF and RAF set. I incorrectly aligned the squadron codes with the top of the fuselage, and by the time I realised my mistake, they had stuck fast! The base is a piece of marine plywood, as befits an aircraft made from plywood and balsa wood. It’s my first attempt at static grass. Possibly put too much on. Model Cobber
  20. @Stephen started his GB build thread for a Beaufighter VII using markings from a Blackbird Models sheet, Operation Overlord Pt:1. I noticed markings for a Lysander were also on that sheet. With Eduard's reboxing of the Gavia plastic in my stash, and a quick trip through the ether to Sprue Brothers to secure that decal sheet, I'm ready to begin! While I originally bought the kit for the 309 Squadron (Polish) markings shown on the box art, this GB is an even better topic. This kit is the Gavia plastic with new bits from Eduard, including the instructions and decals shown here. And here are Eduard's PE, resin, and masks Gavia's plastic and Fair warning, it will be something of a record if I do complete within this GB's span. BTW, living in Southern California, a mag 6.4 earthquake hit about 180 mi NE of me (near NAWS China Lake) as I sat down to start this thread. As of this moment, the largest shock was 6.4, with 45 fore- and after-shocks so far. Given the distance, the temblor was felt as a rolling motion in my home, causing hanging fixtures to gently sway.
  21. Hi all I have wanted to build one of these for a while now and with the excellent Airfix kit and the introduction of the Wonderful FB.31 conversion from @wellsprop I thought I had better make a start. These includes the extra intakes for the engine belly panels, due to the more poweful Rolls Royce engine, main wheels, main cockpit area and the radar bulge. A request for info was kindly answered by @Ed Russell who supplied me with the required info to proceed. I thought I haven't built a yellow machine since earlier this year when I built the Gee Bee Z and do love brushing on the yellow paint. I am afraid I can't put any images up as most I can see are on Airlines . net and don't want to get into bother. I have just started basic assembly so had enough for some photos,so here goes. Here is the lovely cockpit with seat from Wellsprop, next to it is the Airfix cockpit I have adapted, I have done this as I already had a Mk.2 bang seat from True details and wanted to use that, I have looked at the CA and CMR kits and it looks like the whole of the rear bulkhead could be set further back but can't confirm whether this is correct or not at the mo. Kits World 3D IP decals Various sub assemblies IP decals I place, fixed with CA Painted Humbrol satin black Air intakes assembled and smoothed out, the kit is wrong for this in that the FB.31. Had two compressor fans but you can't really see right down in there so will be okay for this build. Rear engine face and jetpipe added Undercarriage bay walls clipped together well, cockpit just dryfitted at the mo. I am impressed with the fit of everything so far. I am not sure which airframe I will build yet, I need to read all the info Ed kindly sent me. Thanks again to both Ed and Ben as without them I would not be able to complete this project. Thanks for looking in Chris
  22. Made a few silly errors with this. A shame as it's a nice kit to build. I used Revell Aqua, Vallejo Model Air, Vallejo Model Color, Humbrol Acrylic Dropper Bottles, and Humbrol Acrylic paints. I guess it still looks like a Hunter though.
  23. Finished another 23rd Tactical Fighter Squadron aircraft. This is number 13 in the set, from the P-36 of 1939 to a Desert Storm F-16C. I still need to finish an F-105, an F-4E (my jet), and a Block 50 F-16C at squadron stand down in 2010. I left the squadron in 1987 and mostly everyone else had transferred out before DS. The weasel guys mostly ended up at George AFB, California and I saw some of them on CNN day one of the war. I relied on the internet for researching this build. I found some photos of this jet after the return to Spangdahlem with an impressive set of mission tally markings on the intake ramp. I wanted to do this model as it may have looked on its first sortie of the war. I think 69-7209 was assigned to the 81st TFS while at Spangdahlem but was loaned to the 23rd for the Incirlik deployment. At least that's what I saw on the interweb, so it must be true. I think the first sortie was day 2 since the Turkish government only approved operations from Incirlik on the day of Jan 17, 1991. The Saudi-based units started flying the night of Jan 16/17. This is the older Hasegawa 1/48th kit. I have 2 in the stash with aftermarket, so I wasn't that interested in the new Meng or ZM kits. I used some Eduard pre-colored PE in the front cockpit, but used the kit rear panel, Quickboost seats. External stores were kit tanks and AIM-7s, Tamiya AGM-88 Harms, Hasegawa ALQ-131 ECM pod from a Weapons Set. I also used the excellent Speed Hunter Graphics Combat Weasels decal sheet. I also used a paper "belly strap", copied from the G Factor vinyl set that I bought a couple of years ago. They look fine to me under paint. Paint is Model Master enamels, lightened with Testors small bottle flat white. A light dusting of Tamiya smoke on the alligator skin on the tails since these jets all used the "smokeless engines". Weathering with very thin oil paints.
  24. HI everyone!😀 this is my 1/48 Mitsubish Ki-46 "Dinah" It's not famous, but I realy like the shape of this airplane.. this kit is almost 30years old.. with some modification, I think it turns out well. hope you guys like it!
