Queen of the Skies - Boeing 707

Recommended Posts

I am a late starter for the GB as I could not decide on my build.

So here it is

53562392870_13e7163f9c_b.jpg

The box contains two kits, one part started and the other untouched, I may do both if I have the space.

As you can see I have decals for both QANTAS and the RAAF. I also have another QANTAS sheet for the later ochre cheatline scheme which I am tending towards.

I am already signed up for that one, plenty of KC-135s and other 707 variants waiting in the stash

Thanks Cliff,

Big is the word, here is an in work E-8 I built a few years back with a Spitfire Mk1a for size comparison.

  • 2 weeks later...

So here we go, I took the started one out of the box to recall how much had been done, more than the 25% rule me thinks!

53581804347_220d758b7b_b.jpg

On with the new build, for such a big kit there are not that many parts or assembly steps (page 1 of 2)

53582998549_c66289bc68_b.jpg

Starting with the cockpit

53582673831_18b26b9cf9_b.jpg

I could not resist adding to the parts count with the FE and Nav stations

53583120025_816abcae65_b.jpg

The fuselage interior got a splash of Tamiya silver (it's all I had on hand)
53583120050_e0ccacb903_b.jpg

I decided to paint the cockpit walls grey

So we are off!

The cockpit has been finished and installed along with the 35gs of nose weight

I had also primed the fuselage exterior prior to added the cabin window strips, then the fuselage was buttoned up

The rear fuselage flying surfaces were assembled

Here are the decals I am using, I will be building City of Canberra (VH-EAB) or City of Adelaide (VH-EAF).

Beautiful scheme on these. Very similar to John Travolta’s Qantas 707.

The JT scheme was the very first scheme applied to 707s, it has gone through a couple of iterations up to the one I am doing. The one prior to the one I am doing is represented in the decals in the first post I made in the kit box which is a modification to the JT scheme (title font mainly).

Is there really a choice?

Well 25+ years in Canberra and only 2 years here so far. If City of Wollongong was on the sheet it would have been the one!

That's a long time in Canberra, friend! (Born here, now back here...)

Although one thing I'll never forget is seeing the Qantas 707 and a RAAF 707 in loose formation over LBG one day, must have been in the very late 90s or early 00s.

Also where did you get that kit? I've looked all over for a 1/72 707 and can't find one for under like 150 shipped.

I've had them for a while, the started one was given to me by a friend and ACTSMS club member and the other sold to me by another club member for about $20 as I recall a few years back as he was downsizing his stash and knew I had a thing for 707/KC-135s.

Not much to report on this one. I had started to lay down the gloss white and mask for the lower fuselage colour when I found out that I needed to fill a four of the rear cabin windows for a QANTAS jet. I'm also still waiting for the vertical stab paint to dry fully before masking up the leading edge.

53595451229_d5d9879c87_b.jpg

The part built kit was minus windscreen, so I broke out one of my BPK replacements ready to modify it for fitment when the time comes.

53595137921_ff4587633a_b.jpg

And finally just for fun a balancing act with the nose weight fitted.

Nice job on this.  Does the BPK part fit when you cut down the forward part of the nose on the Heller kit?  That's how I would approach it.  It looks much better than the original Heller part, besides.  Heller's windscreen is too tall.  The 707/727/737 windshield is more "squinty."  Now, if you were really hard core, you'd cut the fuselage just aft of the cockpit area and lower it by about 4mm to line up the windscreen with the passenger window line, another detail Heller got wrong.  But you're against the clock on this one.  For a similar project as yours, I would require 18 months start-to-finish.

Filling of the cabin windows done, masked and lower fuselage sprayed black prior to the aluminium going on

53601356766_ca0a5e986d_b.jpg

The vertical stab was masked and the leading edge painted

53600488387_ba7332c8b7_b.jpg

With the fuselage work mostly done it was time to attack the wings. I added a shim between the inboard and outboard lower wing sections and tidied the join up. The other side to be done next.

53600488377_4228d76d34_b.jpg

The aluminium added over the black along with a couple of spots of Boeing grey on the radome and lower fuselage

Very nice job on this.  The paint buildup around the windows is slight, allowing you to use decal for the cheatline without a complicated masking job.  Those wings always have the funny gaps in the same places, and of course those building this model (you know already) should add a shim at the wing-to-body fairing as well.  The hardest part of this kit is lining up the engines.  The outboard engines want to twist upward relative to the fuselage horizontal datum, and the best way to combat that is to add a plastic shim to the forward part of the engine pylon.  Getting all of them to line up properly in the vertical perspective is also hard--but placing the model on a large sheet of poster board with parallel lines drawn on it helps to get them all pointed in the right direction.
