Andy Moore Posted December 14, 2015 Author Posted December 14, 2015 Thanks guys PS - I like the new engine configuration less & less with each new angle I see....Those tailpipes are horribly skinny! I hadn't really seen it until I took that top down shot, but they do look a bit out of proportion with the large front ends of the engines. They don't look quite as bad in person, but I think some of the overall proportions are a bit of with the design. I still like it though. I guess there's always a danger in going back to concept designs. They're meant to be starting points from which a design can be refined, which is how we got the original X-Wing. I think here they've kind of gone backwards, starting with the X-Wing and going back to the concept. It sounds nice from a nostalgia point of view, but it doesn't necessarily end up with the best outcome. Andy 2
Hunter Rose Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 Looking great really love the colours Andy 1
MetroRacing Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 I agree with that statement about going back to the design concepts. The concept is good and I think personally if the exhausts were made larger and placed in-line with the engines it would tidy the whole look up. I'm debating whether to buy one and test that out but having just consolidated my stash down to automotive themes. I'm dubious lol Ashley 2
Thom216 Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 Those colors look great! Kind of like a 'special service' squadron. 1
Sgt.Squarehead Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 Ashley, I was thinking along similar lines.....Maybe graft some shortened T-65 exhausts onto the T-70 and remodel the godawful split intake in line with the original concept? T-67-500 Anyone? 2
MetroRacing Posted December 15, 2015 Posted December 15, 2015 I've just watched the 4th trailer again and the shot of the rear of the new x-wing in flight. I couldn't help but notice that the exhausts look a lot bigger than the kit's ones. I don't know if it's coz in the clip the exhausts are light up or just a trick because of the length of the shot but now I'm wondering if the kit is actually accurate to the film, or the concept art? Hmmm Ashley 1
Andy Moore Posted December 15, 2015 Author Posted December 15, 2015 I'll have to check it against the trailers. You'd think, in theory, that they'd have used the original digital files to create the tooling, but then maybe Lucasfilm wouldn't supply them. They may have just got a basic 3D file and had to interpret some of the details themselves, so I guess it's possible that there could be accuracy issues. It's possible that the films 3D models could have been tweeked too, after Bandai's design had been signed off. And, as you say, it could be a trick of perspective. It won't be long till we get a better chance to examine the film version, at least Andy 3
MetroRacing Posted December 15, 2015 Posted December 15, 2015 I don't think lucasfilm would have changed the cgi models at a late date as they built at least one full size prop. Would have cost a lot for a small change lol. I could be wrong but yeah, at least it won't be too long to find out haha. Though I probs won't get to see it till next year Ashley 1
plasmahal Posted December 15, 2015 Posted December 15, 2015 Fantastic job as usual Andy. Will be watching with interest. I got the Bandai falcon delivered direct from Japan ebay shop for £32. Looks to be worth every penny. 1
HOUSTON Posted December 15, 2015 Posted December 15, 2015 Andy, I would have chosen # 3 too . It has more Oomph and Vavoom to it. I am impressed by the quality and neatness of your work, Looks Flawless. SUPERB job so far... I almost feel like I am flying with your thread watching your build !! 1
Andy Moore Posted December 17, 2015 Author Posted December 17, 2015 Thanks guys So, almost done. I've added a bit more shading to some of the white areas. Still doesn't show up that well, as the photo lights tend to wash every out, but it looks a bit better in person. I'd got some decals for the red triangles on the engine intakes left over from the Bandai Snowspeeder, which was lucky. While I was at it, I added a couple of TIE kill marks that came from the decal sheet from the old Finemolds Y-Wing. Not strictly accurate to the artwork, but they add a bit of personality. BB-8's in place, he just needs some paint on his antenna. I'm still not happy about that joint on the fuselage halves but I can't risk putting any more pressure on the parts to get them tighter, as I think something might crack. I probably should have opened up the holes for the connection pins, as everything was a very tight fit. I'll give it all a satin coat, then I might try running a bit of deluxe filler into the gap. Apart from that, I've just got the stand to finish off and then unmask the canopy and I'll call it done Andy 8
MetroRacing Posted December 17, 2015 Posted December 17, 2015 Looks good to me. Having seen the new film this morning, I still can't comment on the accuracy of the exhaust haha. I forgot to take note of them lol. 1
Zarichta Posted December 17, 2015 Posted December 17, 2015 Fantastic job! White areas look great and I really liked the TIE kill marks. 1
Sgt.Squarehead Posted December 17, 2015 Posted December 17, 2015 Wow that gap is getting worse, or at least more noticeable.....Hope you can find a fix for it, because your work on the rest of the model is just beautiful. 1
Blastvader Posted December 17, 2015 Posted December 17, 2015 Bootiful as always Andy. Ref: 'the gap' can you still take the part away at this stage or do you think that will damage it? Because cutting the pins down a little at an angle is normally a good bet with Bandai kits as the tolerances are so tight. 1
noelbarnes Posted December 18, 2015 Posted December 18, 2015 Wow Andy that looks terrific. Saw the movie the other night....swear I saw that one in the backgroun. 1
Andy Moore Posted December 18, 2015 Author Posted December 18, 2015 Thanks guys Not seen the film yet Hopefully should be seeing it on Monday Ref: 'the gap' can you still take the part away at this stage or do you think that will damage it? Because cutting the pins down a little at an angle is normally a good bet with Bandai kits as the tolerances are so tight. That would have been my first choice, but at best I think I'll damage the paint, at worst the upper fuselage section may snap. I kind of knew it wasn't going to go together right, as I was clicking the parts together. The fit was just too tight, but by that stage, I couldn't prise them apart again. Hopefully running a little filler into the gap and touching up the paint will sort it. It looks slightly worse than it is on the photos because the lighting exaggerates the shadows. Andy 1
Nigel Heath Posted December 18, 2015 Posted December 18, 2015 That looks fantastic + I like the new seasonal avatar. 1
Andy Moore Posted December 20, 2015 Author Posted December 20, 2015 I managed to get some filler into the gap in the fuselage and it look reasonable now, so before I notice anything else that needs fixing, I'm going to call it done. The last thing to do was the base. I wasn't sure what to do with it at first, then I thought the best thing to do was use the orange and white colours from the ship. The Star Wars logo came from the decal sheet for the Finemolds Slave 1 The support's a 3mm acrylic rod that, handily, is the same size as the hole in the base of the X-Wing for the kit stand, so I didn't need to modify anything. I'll get some shots done of the finished thing, and get them up later. Thanks to everyone for following. Andy 8
sonny Posted December 20, 2015 Posted December 20, 2015 Looks like a great kit! Nice paint job too. 1
