That one takes me back - to the days when we still had a Navy to reckon with ! The Phoebe ('The Fighting Forty Two'), as someone else said. They had fun with that. Warship ran to 4 series between 1973 and 1977. Initially HMS Phoebe was used to act as 'HMS Hero' (certainly in the first 2 series), however she became an Exocet Leander upon refit in 1975 (and HMS Hero was a Gun Leander). Several other Leanders were therefore used to play HMS Hero, these being HMS Danae, HMS Dido, HMS Diomede, HMS Hermione, HMS Juno and HMS Jupiter. All wore HMS Phoebe's pennant number of F42 (as well as Hero nameplates aft) but all retained their own heli-deck letters. Interestingly HMAS Derwent (a River Class destroyer/escort based upon the original Type 12M Rothesay Class and from which the Type 12I Leanders descend) was used in 1976 for scenes filmed in the Far East. Debs, who this morning received her copy of 'Warship' Series 2 on DVD.
John B (Sc)
Thanks Debbie. Wasn't aware of several vessels being used - shall have to keep an eye open for those heli-deck give aways. Might buy a copy of the second series, since I never saw that. I hope the other series are available or become available too. You clearly have some detailed knowledge of these vessels - impressive ! RobertF
Ah yes, the Warship series! Excellent series, the naval answer to Z Cars, with a prominent role for the shipborne Wasp in (one of) the first episode(s) called Hot Pursuit. Lovely theme tune, too. And some very nice shots of HMS "Hero"; I have always loved the Leander class design. I only have Series 1 on DVD yet, thanks for reminding me to go and get the other series, Debs! Series 1 and 2 are available on DVD, I'm not sure when Series 3 and 4 will be available. Growing up in a Military houshold (My Da was based at Northwood) meant that it was de rigeur that we watched any and all military style programmes on TV. Also, a freind of my Father built warship models professionally (the 1/96th scale ones you used to see in the Recruiting Offices) so I learned a lot about Leanders from quite an early age. Apparently the fact that 7 different Leanders wore the same pennant number confused the daylights out of the Soviet navy at the time!
perdu
Cheers Rodders, should be OK but I'll give you a shout if it becomes necessary I heard that the Wasp had an incident recently I hope she soon recovers Let me know if you want me to pop out a fresh Nimbus some time when I'm in the alchemy dungeon/crypt/garage b Edited November 18, 2016 by perdu trying to remove sad moji bah!!! aha done it on pc

Not that much, I should imagine, as they were constantly changing their ships' pennant numbers themselves to throw Western naval intelligence off the scent.... But being the rigid bureaucrats they were they probably had not expected that two could play at that game (if only for the benefit of a television series)! Ascoteer
Having now watched Warship Series 1 and 2 it is apparent that HMS Phoebe was the ship used except for the last episode of Series 2 (Episode 10 'Echo of Battle), where the German Politician comes on board, it is quite clearly HMS Juno. junglierating
Well my dad (chief mechanician)used to moan about it constantly but perhaps it was influential on me as the old man (hero's capt) was a toom pilot. All said it was so much better than that rubbish that was on acouple of years ago that was dreadful....MEO had a nervous brakedown .....all said my dad seemed to think that the jock playing the captain was quite good....ah well nowt as queer as folk. Still nothing like the real mob.....now I have some dits but what happens in the mess stays in the mess!, Anyone know what I'm on about??? I'll get me coat Edited November 24, 2016 by junglierating punshasion and spellin
Ascoteer
The 'Toom pilot fellah was the Skipper in Series 3 (Cdr Glenn), in Series 4 the Skipper was ex-Nuc boat (Capt Holt). My favourite was the Skipper in both Series 1 and 2 (Cdr Nialls), not least cos he was rather dishy.
perdu
Junglierating I hope you realise that the reasons we keep posting Naval threads is to encourage the release to the world of dits that have been held in captivity for way too long. Only this way is sanity to prevail The madder the dits the saner we all become Oh dear, Debs going all gooey eyed at a nautical type huh Proves the saying "All the nice girls..."
perdu
I wonder what people are using as Light Admiralty Grey for Naval helicopter interiors, can anyone suggest a suitable modelling paint range please? My own frantic searches get a nul return, even the Sovereign range seems to miss it, unless I should be searching the ship colours instead of the aircraft range. I have been slopping Mr Color light bluey grey into the Wopse and Wessex for tidying up with but its becoming time to get real now

perdu
Thanks both James's, I kinda had a feeling.. I just wasn't sure, all this nautical stuff is new ground for me I've just redecorated the Wessie in MSG seems close enough for a dark hole inside a small box Cheers Edited December 3, 2016 by perdu
71chally
Funny ole thing, I was being regaled with colourful stories of Wasp and Wessex at work again yesterday. We are very lucky in that we have a very seasoned ex RN Helo pilot on unit (he knows our Crisp) and he even conducted flights with the nuke slung underneath. Doesn't help with the interior colour mind!

Rodders I was very lucky to fly with Terry Martin in his Wasp last year to obtain material for the forthcoming Scout & Wasp Warpaint book. I am also about to start a Scout-to-Wasp conversion, so if Perdu doesn't need your Modelart Wasp decals, I would love to have them.
