Just come back from shopping, where I picked up a bottle of what looks to be the new Klear.

(Left) Old bottle with some of the new liquid in the bottom, (Middle) Old bottle with the clear Klear, (Right) New bottle of Klear

Differences noted are:-

No longer clear :mental:

Decanting a bit into the above empty bottle, it seemed a bit more liquid than the old version.

Smells more of lemons, than ammonia in the new bottle. :)

Bottles now in 750ml as opposed to 500ml (and about 30p cheaper based on same amonut)

The question is has anyone tested it out yet, and do you have any results to report?

If not I shall dig out an old 1/144 kit and test it out.

I just bought a bottle of the 'new' Pledge with Future over here. Seems exactly the same as the old stuff, seems to work just as well.

If anyone is having trouble finding any of the old stuff, i found a website where you can still get it for £4.55 a bottle

The last bottle I bought cost less than 1/3 of that. Don't think they'll sell much.

If you can find it, hence the reason for posting Tony!

Plenty of the old clear Klear at our local Waitrose, 2.48 a bottle. Seems unlikely they'd be selling it now if it had been replaced by a new product?

Just a quick update - I have sprayed a 1/144 Tomcat I am building, and I found the solution (neat) has a tendency to run much quicker if sprayed on wet, and dries to a very high gloss after one coat. Once I have finished the decals, I shall attempt to brush it on to seal the decals, and report this weekend.

Unfortunately I don't have a kit to hand that needs the canopy dipping, but I may venture into the loft this weekend and dig one out.

Damien, I think you will find that they will have to sell their old stock first, before displaying any new stock. Apart from us modellers, I don't think there would be that much of a demand for Klear :)

Was there any difference, Andy, with the new formulation? Is it still usable on the canopies?

I presume it was made cloudy to make it less appealing to children and the lemon scent to make it more appealing to users!

Sorry forgot to update this with my findings from before Christmas

I can report that my tests are now done and the new formula Klear will not be an option for me.

The results of spraying are, that it is way too liquid compared to the original formula, and takes every opportunity to run and pool, no matter how lightly I tried to mist it.

The results of dipping clear parts are definitely not on a par with the original. From a distance they look similar, but up close the clarity is reduced, as it does not seem to have the self levelling qualities of the original. I have just dipped a second set of identical canopies in orginal Klear and will post pictures that will hopefully show the differences. I tried to photo the differences, but they didn't show up very well.

As to longevity, I currently have a 1/72 Jaguar with the canopy dipped in the "new" formula, masked up since New Years Day. Once the weather gets better I shall endeavour to finish the paint job and unmask. So far to date the Original Klear has been masked up to 3 months with no adverse effects, so this will test its sticking power.

Fortunately I have three unopened bottles of the Original to tide me over for now.

Bit of a shame, but apart from its uses for making canopies shine, I would be ok using other gloss varnishes. It's sometimes useful in decalling too, so maybe I'll pick up another bottle when I next see one. It won't stop me making models if it suddenly disappeared... it's not a panacea... broken leg? Brush on 2 coats of Klear!

The presence of 'Wax' on the label makes me worry.
Don't know about the new version, but the old contained no wax. I think the word 'wax' is just used to imply 'shiny'.
Ok....... Off to Sainsburys tomorrow to 'klear' their shelves then!
Sainsbury’s is the only place locally I’ve been able to get the older version.

My Missus is now wondering why there are numerous bottles of floor polish under the sink!

I've got 10 bottles of the stuff stashed under the modelling desk in a box. The missus was getting really fed up of me buying a bottle every time we went to Morrisons though.

Home Bargains in Llanelli has a good stock of the old Klear, less the two bottles I bought recently.
