JWM
Hi, Since my Sm 55 X is approaching to end I will try to do a double build of Beriev's small machines: Be-2 (KOR-1, model by A-model) and Be-4 (KOR-2, model by RPM). (photos of boxes from net, my boxes are not fresh, both models were in stash for 20 years). The RPM model is an re-box of original Omega and then Firefox kits (accordingly to Scalemates: https://www.scalemates.com/pl/kits/rpm-72007-beriev-be-4--149312). It is from late 1990s. Similar, A-model KOR-1 is from 1999 https://www.scalemates.com/kits/amodel-7225-kor-1-1--138699 and I think this is exactly the year I bought it. Both kits are rather basic at first look, however the KOR-1 is nicely engineered. The KOR-1 (Be4) is just a bit more than vacu quality kit... The parts (Be-1/KOR-1): KOR-2/Be-4 For KOR-2 there is a lot of drawings in Net, some of them I've printed I started from glueing together the wing. I am going to work a bit on surface details of the wings. In case of Be-2 (KOR-1) I painted inside with Humbrol 87, assembled engine and made some sanding. The model appeared to fit surprisinly (as for early A-model) well I glued top of main float with lower wing (the nice engineering for riging, much better than in Hasegawa Seagull when the riging of float is the same. The fuselage halves are not glued together, nor the lower wing wih them, they just snap and tape secure it now for photo That is all for today... JWM
Yesterday I eneded about midnight and had no power to post photos... Mostly I was focusing on Be-2/Kor-1. I made riging of mai float and attached side floats: Rear part of fuselage was covered with fabric, in model it is done with pannels, so I glued streched sprue in the pannel separation lines: Some basic inside is also done Last photo is from today (below)- I glued fuselage with bottom wind and finished riging of floats. I also painted areas dificcult to paint after attaching upper wing: In case of of Be-4 /KOR-1 I sanded filler and also surface of whole wing (which was not smooth) I scaled drawing to 1/72 and found that model has rather right shapes in outlay: Meanwhile I am finishing out of the GB two other Berievs: MBR 2 M17 and MBR 2 bis (M34), which I have started in June or early July. So in principle it is OT, but I hope you do not mind if I will show them from time to time here... CliffB
I particularly like the look of the Be-4, J-W. That prop looks really close to the windscreen! Cliff
JWM
I almost finished glueing together KOR-1/Be-2 It appeared, that she is a small and cute machine, a bit like Japanese E8 Dave maybe. On photos she always looked for me too squered but if you look ar 3 D shapes she gets some elegance... One of very positive feeling is the impression, which accompanied me from the very early years when I started to construct models. This is a kind of surprise arising when you see model of new type gluead together, when the spatial appearence reveals for the first time... Maybe this kind of experience is the strongest one for airplane models, since the shape is not box-like as it is in case of vehicles (sorry if I harm somone...) :). Best regards and it is not the end yet, of course. J-W
Courageous
She does indeed look rather elegant. Not long before the colour goes on. Stuart
JWM
Hi, Yesterday I did remaining riging between wings in KOR-1 Yoday I sanded down the filler which blinded openings for cable and put a coat of aluminium Let it dry... In Beriev Be 4 model I traced down the ailerons and flaps. The RPM model has no flap directly behind engine, I think the new model in 1/48 has it. I have to ga back to photos to check how it should be. Uf I will not found I will belive rather new model in 1/48... {EDIT- there is flap right behind the engine, visible on photos in a article about Be-4 in Aviatsia i Vremienia} The original engine/prop/cowling in RPM model are discussing: "some people said that they are usless, other says that you can use them for throwing away" I am trying to translate here one Polish joke, but the esprite if it fades a little... Anyway - they are horrible as you may see from this photo: For example the cowling is just a piece of tube. With proper diameter and lenght, but without any fine shapes. I looked through my spare box and have found any suitable substitute. So I decided to do some fine shaping of it. Inside inlet I wraped around a double band of some 0.5 mm streched sprue and add some filler to fill shape. Since Russian radial engine was a copy of Wright cyclone I used a resin copy of Boeing 247 (Williams Bros) engine. As you may see the engine is already drilled out to have a prop spinning. I added camshaft elements on top of each cyliner (from the same streched sprue), to the end I glued a piece of plastic tube as a kind of easy adjustable support. I made proper diameter opening in front wall of engine fairing The (it is no glued yet) then it will be something like that: I started to work also on inside of fuselage, I will give photos in separate post soon. JWM
On photo below the side windows, or rather opening for windows as well as some imitation of construction on side walls are seen. The paint was still wet when I made photo. If it will be still glossy after drying I will coat it with matt varnish, we will see if needed Regards J-W
Courageous
The KOR is looking pretty neat and I'm sure the Be-4 will come up to scratch soon enough. Stuart
AdrianMF
Nice work on the KOR-1, and the double rigging. It looks quite elegant in silver too. The Be-4 looks like the very definition of a short run kit. I’m sure they copied the engine from an old FROG kit! The detailing and improvements look good. Looking forward to your progress. JWM
On detailing of inside I can follow (simplifying of course) rich in details inside of new model of Be4/KOR-2 by Mars Model in 1/48, which looks like below ( photos from Rumourmonger) We will see ... JWM
Be4/KOR-1 I added some fuselage structure. The windows are glued in and secured by tape from outside I glued both halves of fuselage together The fin is a bit reshaped and made higher for about 2 mm (following drawings) More soon Regards J-W
AdrianMF
The interior detail looks very busy and effective. Regards, Adrian
JWM
Berievs are progressing. On Be-2 I applied decals (stars by Techmod, "4" from A-model UTI-4, only small star on frontt from original set. The colour was to brick-like, orange and general sharpnes was not perfect in original set. I also added some details like beech wheels, gun sight, mirrors and riging cable fairing near fuselage With Be-4 I sanded added height of fin and junction of fuselage halves, and put seats in cockpit (scratchwork) I finished MBR-2 M 17, which I stsrated in early summer, so is outside our GB but I hope some of you like flying boats more then others More photos on RFI already: The second of MBR-2s (also outside GB), a "bis" (or M-34) variant is also advanced Best regards, I will continue Jerzy-Wojtek

JWM
I start to do finishing works - like detailing KOR-1/Be 2. I added two small radio masts on MGs covers but also I add some wash. I used some black permament marker and pure etanol to wash out excess using small brush. Still some work is to done (bombs, waterline dirt, exhaust pipes...) Cheers J-W Edited December 8, 2019 by JWM
JWM
Be2 (KOR-1) seems to be finished I was trying to do natural light photo but at 4 PM was already too dark, I have to do digital increase of brightness but result is noisy... With photos to Gallery and to RFI I will wait for tomorrow. Regards J-W
JWM
So, now only the work with Beriev Be 4 (KOR 2) left The wings were partially fabric covered, whereas in model all loked like all metal. To immitate linien cover ribs should be visible. The drawings shows 3 mm (in 1/72) distance between ribs. I masked with Tamiya 6 mm tape both top and bottom of wing, lefting maybe 0.3 mm between pices of tape. I painted it with not diluted Humbrol enamels (27, but it is not very important). When it will dry, I will re mask in between current position to get effectively distance between ribs equal to 3 mm. It need to dry so meanwhile an extension of engine fairing (following the drawings) was constructed Cheers J-W
JWM
After drying of paint I shifted tapes 3 mm aside and paint again. This gave as result 3 mm distances and ribs between them and bottom side (with some correction) to be continied Regards J-W
John Masters
I like your Be-2 very much. I think I built one of these AModel kits too, back in the late last century. Typical Amodel moulds and you made it shine. Lovely!
