Romeo Alpha Yankee
I had plans to do this one for a while, just did not have the motivation, I will be attempting this one as ZM406 in 70SQN 100th Anniversary markings. Decals are from Babibi. I had hoped to build it for the RAF 100 GB but never got my other entry finished. I hope to have it done for our club RAF 100 display in November though Since I am in the throws of decoding Revell colour callouts to paints I can source here (and to see if I already have the equivalents in my paint racks and draws) I have started with the externals rather than the cockpit and internals which will need a bit of painting and masking. Not that I can build anything truly OOB box these days I had to make some modifications. I have started with the flying surfaces. I am separating the control surfaces to show them in their powered off position when the aircraft is parked. The wing has also been assembled and flap track fairings fitted Since these images were taken I have figured some of the interior colours and some paint has been sacrificed to get the interior construction going.
Calum
Hope to see it done at ScaleACT Ray. I actually like the look of the A400. I hope the RNZAF buy it to replace the C-130H's (which are older than me)
huvut76g7gbbui7
I'll watch this if you don't mind. (sub text 'and unashamedly steal your ideas for the one in the stash ) They occasionally fly low level up the loch and turn into the valley behind my house. I know this because my son rubs it in because I have missed them all so far.

modelman182
Oh yes - another good one to follow. Got one of these in the stash, which I bought by mistake (honest, guv, it REALLY was a mistake!). I later bought the 144th scale one I had originally planned on buying for a 'Heavy Haulers' diorama. Great start so far. Kev
Romeo Alpha Yankee
I started to add paint to the cockpit and interior parts Not totally accurate colours but they will do. The deflected control surfaces are refitted and faired in As well as the ailerons

I am happy to use what I have. One of the local shops had Revell paints about 5 years ago. I did pick up some of their tinlets but to be honest I have not happy with the way they went down. I also found they reacted with other paint brands if you over sprayed them.
stevehnz
Not being an airbrusher, that's not a problem for me, I do like the way they hairy stick though. I'm a bit disillusioned with Humbrol which is all I can get local, Tamiya is mail order from elsewhere in NZ, but Revell from BNA & Colour Coats from Creative in Aus have been getting some attention lately too. I mainly use enamels. Steve. Edited October 12, 2018 by stevehnz
John_W
Very nice. Always tempted by a WIFF in the old white/blue/grey/silver RAF Transport command scheme.
zebra
Very nice Ray. Have been tempted by one of these myself - especially since I saw one perform at RIAT this year, it's pretty nimble for its size! - but it's just too big. Maybe in 1/144 though. 2 minutes ago, John_W said: Always tempted by a WIFF in the old white/blue/grey/silver RAF Transport command scheme. Dark earth, mid stone (or was it light stone), black undersides and a white panel above the cockpit for me!

Romeo Alpha Yankee
So after a great day at the Warbirds Downunder airshow yesterday, it is back to the bench to recuperate I finished painting and decalling the cockpit I also added a decal from the spares box for the load master's station Then some paint for the cargo bay The wheel wells and sponsons were assembled and started to paint Sink marks a plenty which I won't worry about since they won't be seen (I hope) Then to some masking of the cargo bay floor and ramp they got some more paint, with some further masking to come. The engines were then attacked with some paint and glue I also drilled out a vent hole on each nacelle piece. And then I started to separate the prop blade assemblies from the sprues, I did not pay enough attention and managed to hack on of the blades One prop assembled and others to go I have found there is a fair bit of flash on a lot of the parts, something I did not expect for a newish kit such as this. Also, the sprue attachment points are quite chunky on a lot of parts and you need to be patient when removing them and then there is a bit of clean up required post removal.
Romeo Alpha Yankee
The cargo bay floor and ramp are now painted. After laying down the paint for the main floor colour, masking that and then the metallic strips, I had to mask those off to paint the tie down points. Part done Finished masking Black down And masking removed Fun fact of the day, it took me about an hour and a half to lay down 426 little bits of tape to cover the silver bits. Painting took about 3 minutes and tape removal about 5 minutes. was it worth the effort considering most of it will be down a dark cavern when it put it all together?
Romeo Alpha Yankee
The build goes on, The cockpit assembly has been attached to the cargo bay floor and the walls have gone up around the flooring Some random wiring Let there be light and one for the cockpit for good measure
Romeo Alpha Yankee
It is finally starting to take shape. Some nose weight going in, Revell suggested 80gs I added 90 Sponsons going together Engines and props in final stages, the fit of the nacelles again was not the best, some putty and clean up required. And the fuselage which needed a lot of help. I am not sure if my wiring contributed to it. Some experimenting with a payload And a size comparison with another project of mine
