Seamus Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 (edited) Afternoon folks, Here's my second build for the GB then, Tamiya's superb little Skyray. I seem to be inadvertantly building Douglas' Naval aircraft, but I thought I'd go with another kit we don't see enough of around the fora. IMHO opinion, it's a great looking little aircraft and another that should add a little bit extra to the display shelf On with the obligatories As usual, I'll be building mainly OOB. The decal sheet offers some nice colourful markings, though I think I'll shy away from attempting the scheme on the box as those decals could be a bit tricky to get to settle down. I'm itching to get this one underway so I'll probably make a start on spraying up the undercarriage and cockpit this afternoon, so progress will be reported in due course Cheers Shaun Edited January 18, 2009 by Seamus
Stebos Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 I came very close to doing this one myself, it seems a super little kit on the sprues. Be good to see how it goes together.
mahross Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 Good looking aircraft. I'll be watching this. Ross
John Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 Be interesting to watch. I always tend to groan inwardly when I see separate noses like this! John
Davec_24 Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 I built this one a couple of years ago. It's nicely detailed for a 1/72, and goes together fine from what I can remember - I don't see any big holes or obvious gaps in mine, anyway. I did the colour scheme on the box, and got the decals to settle down fine - the only thing is, when I got the model out the other day I found that some of those lavish fin and spine decals had dried and flaked off - I made this in the days before I used matt coats to seal transfers in (n00b, I know...), so this might be OK if you do seal them properly. I look forward to seeing your build of what is, in my opinion, one of the most graceful looking aircraft ever built - especially considering it's an American one, and they don't usually make their aircraft as pretty as we Brits make ours.
Seamus Posted January 19, 2009 Author Posted January 19, 2009 Cheers chaps Here we go then gents, first progress with this one then and I've made a fair amount of it. The cockpit has been sprayed black and drybrushed silver- nothing fancy. Side consoles were drybrushed white, with a couple of knobs picked out with a cocktail stick. Same goes for the seat, with the cushions painted up with a mix of khaki/ olive drab. Thought about making some belts, but I'm out of 5A fusewire and not a lot will be seen when its all closed up anyways. Seat fitted and dry-fitted in the forward fuselage The undercarriage and intakes were sprayed white, and the fan face painted silver before the wheel well sides and said fan were glued in place. And finally for now, a quick dry-fit of the main components. The fit is superb, even between the two fuselage sections. I reckon I'll have her built up and ready for paint in no time Thanks for looking, all comments welcome Cheers Shaun
alrite Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 Sweet progress Shaun! Cannot say I find the Skyray appealing though lol Can I ask what type of light set up you use to take your photos? cheers, will.
bexwh773 Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 Looking good Shaun Funny looking thing isnt it, looking forwards to seeing the end result Bex
Deon Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 Not bad going Shaun, you'll have this done in no time.
Seamus Posted January 19, 2009 Author Posted January 19, 2009 Thanks very much peeps Have to say, I find it a very sweet looking aircraft. The rounded wingtips give it a much mor elegant look than other deltas Can I ask what type of light set up you use to take your photos? Evening Will. I take my photos in the kitchen, underneath a white flourescent striplight. Provides plenty of light, and is far enough away so that any shadows are not too stark. I think the setup of the camera helps improve the look of the pics as well- I got all the advice I needed a thread Deon started, but can't seem to find it at the moment. I'll dig deeper and post a link when I find it Right then, while I'm here, thought I'd may as well post some more progress. The bulk of the main construction is now done- as I said, the fit is excellent, so it's flown together. The only dodgy areas are the intakes, which are going to need blending in with some milliput. The seams have been mostly sanded smooth, so just a little more work needed here. The canopy has been given a coat of Klear, so is now ready for masking and installation. Also, the stores have been assembled, and now just need the seams sanded down also. Buts that's all for tomorrow Any comments welcome as per usual Cheers Shaun
JosephLalor Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 Going by the cockpit I'd say this'll be one nice-looking 'Ford'. I'll keep an eye on this one. Joseph
mikeew Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 looking good Shaun! You HAVE to do the box art mate, just looks so right with those colourful marines markings. Just trim the decals nice 'n tight and use klear as decal adhesive, no worries. I have its big brother in 1/48 in the stash ...when I get round to it..... how longs this GB last???
AnonymousA667 Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 I have its big brother in 1/48 in the stash ...when I get round to it..... how longs this GB last??? Until the end of April, plenty of time...go on, you know you want to! I have pinned a Current Group Builds calender here. I know it's not logical to place it in the Future Group Builds sub-forum, but I can't pin anything in Current Group Builds! peebeep
zero Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 Thats looking really good Shaun I have a weakness for the Skyray, if they ever did a 1/32 version, I'd be off the same day to by one. Keep up the good work! Dave

Tigerausfb Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 Aren't these just things of beauty? Can I vote for the box scheme please? Amdy
Seamus Posted January 20, 2009 Author Posted January 20, 2009 Thanks for the kind words folks, much appreciated Aren't these just things of beauty? Yes.....yes they are The peer pressure seems to be building over the box scheme I agree it's nice, but I'm always wary of decals that cover the whole of a fin- I can never get them lined up along the leading edge properly. The problem then is mixing up a colour to match the decals to touch up any gaps. However, I'll mull it over, though I'm willing to cut a deal with Mike....I'll do it in that scheme if you build your 1/48 bird and/or enter a certain 1/24 SHAR you mentioned at Telford While I'm here, I've made a tiny bit more progress this evening (though not worthy of pics just yet) and got te intakes faired in with milliput. I meant to do this last night so it would be nice and dry for sanding this evening, but the xbox got in the way last night so I'm a bit behind. Once that's dried throughly, I'll smooth it back with some wet and dry and see whats what Also, the canopy has received a second coat of Klear and is ready for masking. I've decided to brush Klear on instead of dipping, as the latter never seems to leave a nice smooth finish for me Anyways, I'm hoping to be able to get a preshade on her tomorrow evening once the intakes and canopy are sorted, so hopefully I'll be able to post a more interesting update then Thanks for the interest Cheers Shaun
Seamus Posted January 21, 2009 Author Posted January 21, 2009 Cheers Daz Here's a tiny update then and the construction is complete, and I've got her all masked up ready for paint. Had planned to get the preshade done tonight, but a visit to Tescos was in order so it'll have to wait until tomorrow. More pics tomorrow hopefully Cheers Shaun
bexwh773 Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 Coming along nicely Shaun, and the box art does look nice I hate shopping (unless its modelling related ) so I know how you feel Bex

Thers no fear of getting the SHar anywhere near done for this GB but the Skyray shouldn't be a problem. I'll retrieve it from the loft this weekend and get a build thread going....now you keep your end of the bargain, DO THAT BOX TOP SCHEME!! (IIRC its the same scheme inc. in the 48th kit too, so i'll follow suit.)
