VW Golf Gti mk1 - revell 1/24

Hello my friends,

The time has come for me to end this year, but not before I present you the last model that I managed to complete these days. It is about the well-known Golf GTi mk1 from Revell. The quality of this kit is excellent, according to Revell EU. Although metallic silver does not particularly delights me, I decided to preserve the historical truth and chose this color for the model. On the other hand, the wheels are not the original ones, which seemed awkward to me and made the ground clearance too high for the image I had in my mind for the GTi. I managed to adapt some wheels from another Revell kit, namely Chevrolet Impala '67 - the lowrider version. They seem much more suitable to me, they look a bit like BBS and give the model a smaller ground clearance. I tried to add more details to the engine compartment, but even though they are all there, not much can be distinguished :) I made spark plugs, acceleration cable and gearbox cable, battery cables, injection system pipes, windshield washer hose. The only detail I am not satisfied with are the headlight lenses that Revell made too thick and too convex, thus distorting the look of the headlights. In reality, the headlights have an almost flat glass. I hope you like it, at least as much as I enjoyed building it :) Happy new year ! 🎉

It's looking real good,  Congratulations!

You did everthing right for the MKI  Golf GTI.

You kept it periodwise in an quite original colour, added some good looking wheels and installed an upgraded exhaust system. Marco F

thank you, Marco, for the appreciation! I didn't think anyone would notice the muffler 😄. Indeed, I cut the plastic exhaust pipe and added a metal tailpipe for added authenticity.

That's a really great model, beautifully finished and with exactly the sort of aftermarket wheels that find their way onto cars of this type.  A REALLY impressively detailed engine bay too.

thank you, Neddy! I tried to keep as much of the original details as possible, I studied many pictures of the car and that's how I learned that the GTIs all came with a black tailgate around the rear window. Maybe I should have painted the red ornaments of the grid, instead of using the decals, I hope they last over time.

Thank you, Jbourne :) !

I tried to get as close as possible to the original color of the car and found that Tamiya TS-17 Aluminum Silver fits best. Then I applied Mr.Hobby UV-cut varnish. The model looks much better in natural sunlight, I hope to be able to take some photos in the sun as soon as possible. I think you had a lot of fun with this car, documenting the details for the construction, I realized that for its time it was a very well put together and high performance car. Not to mention the low weight, the wheels positioned almost in the corners, a kind of go-kart :) . Even the interior was modern & lovely :)

@Andee it was the closest thing I’ve ever driven to a street legal go-kart, 10 years I drove my 1976 rabbit(golf) and it’s ten years I look back on fondly. It had it issues but, boy there is nothing like going fast in a slow car.

A very nicely finished model that looks really good in silver.

Your photo of the model on the IKEA wood board reminded me of a poster picture that I saw a number of years ago. I was a picture of all the parts of a real  VW Golf (I think) all laid out flat on a floor pictured with one large Allen key.

The caption of the picture read something like 'If IKEA were to supply a car would it look like this?'

thank you, Paul! I would pay now for a ride in a car like this! I sometimes come across an old car, but very well maintained, and I always greet the owner on the go 👍🏻👌🏻. It's cute when I see them smiling with satisfaction. I appreciate the people who manage to keep old cars in circulation or have such passions. Soon the car I have will become "retro". I laugh with my wife that we will go with her to retro mobile shows 😁. It's a 2008 ford focus.

You laugh, but I have taken mine on a couple of classic car navigation runs. It's a 2007 Focus (ST). 😁
