Thanks everyone. Of course, as we all know, the most likely time for things to go pear-shaped will be when I apply the black - a pound to a penny some black will creep under the masking somewhere.

1. Lay the tape on your cutting mat and use a sharp blade to cut a new edge, don't rely on the factory edge.

2. Burnish the edge down well, paying special attention to concave areas and panel lines.

3. Apply a light coat of yellow and allow to cure before doing the black.

The good news here is that there is a masking decal for the white band in front of the black - you can just about see it in the photos as the darker band at the back of the yellow. I put it in place to mask off the front of the white band first, then left it there so when I do the black it will be ready to go. Hoping that will be ok as everywhere with one of the masking decal edges so far has had no bleed under as yet. (see the white patch directly in front of the windscreen). With regard to your Point No 1, it probably helps that I have no choice there as the Indycals masking decals have the shape printed, but you have to cut them out yourself so you will always be painting up to your own edge.

Not had a lot of time on the bench the last couple of weekends, but one thing I did get done was to finish the colour coat for the front half of the body - not a lot different to last time apart from that bit of black at the back and all the masking tape is off now. Looks like I need to do a bit of minor clean up, but generally it's painted up ok.

That was my main target for winter so any other spraying I get done before then is going to be a bonus. I can say that I have the lower part of the rear clam sprayed black now, but the upper clam has needed a bit more prep and is likely to spend the winter in primer.

I suspect this is going to be my last update on this one for quite a while - at some stage over winter I'll sort out the overspray and get some deals on it, but clear coating is going to have to wait for spring I think.

Thanks for looking.

I said it would be a long wait... and with the awful weather we've had so far this year it was nearly six months before I made any progress.

Checking this again, it's the rear clamshell which is going to need most paintwork. While I had finished the floor piece of the clamshell, the main part was just in white primer. Finally we got some sprayable weather and I'm pleased to say that I got the inside of the clamshell painted in Halfords Flat Black (which is pretty shiny for a supposedly matt finish). Masking-wise this was the easy step as I only had to put masking tape over the outside. It didn't even matter if some paint came through the various vents as the outside will be painted black anyway.

Probably of far more interest though was that this week I attacked the decals in earnest, and the front half of the body is now fully decalled up. I said earlier that I was struggling to match the decals with the kit instructions and they seemed different somehow - I was definitely doing Indycals a disservice with that comment as it turns out the reason for the decals not matching is that the Tamiya kit is for the '84 car, but I had an attack of numptiness and ordered the decals for the '85 car. Fortunately that's not a big problem, I'll just make the '85 car instead. :) The only problem seems to be that I've painted the front white stripe a bit narrow - it looks ok but if you put it next to a picture of the real thing you'll be able to tell it's not right.

And that's all I have to show for nearly half a year since the last update. Thanks for looking.

is right to get out there and start spraying!!!

Lovely job so far and look forward to further progress

That's such a familiar  ( hate the word iconic... ) livery . Looks spot on . In-between the Escort build I've been spraying future builds while we're having some better weather .

Indeed, coming along really nicely again Spiny, lets hope for some better weather soon for all you that rely on it. I consider myself really lucky in having a dedicated indoor modelling room where I can spray all year round - I hope if (when!) the missus gets her way and we 'downsize' I'm still as fortunate!

Decalling is looking really good!

Thanks everyone, good to see the 956b can still attract attention. I have to say I'm surprised at how good the Indycals decals are, ok you have to cut the decals out as it's a continuous film, but they separate from the backing paper much quicker than most brands and (at least with Decal Film on them) don't try to curl up so they are actually surprisingly easy to use. They also seem to conform to curves well, the only issue so far is that they don't seem to want to sink into panel lines so I might have to cut along those then let them sink in that way.

As for the weather and spraying, I'm currently spraying in a lock-up garage at the back of the garden hence being so reliant on mild weather and low humidity. If all goes according to plan though there could be a house move later in the year so we'll see what the spraying situation develops into.🤞

I've order a few bespoke sheets of decals of my own creation from Indycals and I agree 100% - very nice product to use.

Teensy-weensy update on this one. With decent weather at the weekend I was able to get some clear on the front part of the body. Two mist coats of Halfords Clear, followed by two wet coats and it seems to have gone ok. There's one corner of a decal which doesn't seem to have stuck down quite properly and it still sticking up in the air a tad (we're talking <0.5mm not sticking here, so very minor), but as it's just carrier film I'm hoping that will sand smooth.

Other than maybe a bit more depth to the colour it doesn't really look much different to before, but it's good to have got this stage out of the way without any reactions between paints and/or decals.

Thanks for looking.

Don't worry, most of it won't be sanded :) Although I will have polishing compound used on it so still a risk of burn through when the time comes.

Meanwhile, a decent (if chilly) day with low humidity meant it was time to look at the rear clamshell. Not a huge amount to report as most of it was already masked over from a couple of weeks ago when I sprayed the yellow at the front, now it was time for the main black colour. As it had been sprayed in white, I figured it was worth giving it a clear coat to minimise paint bleeding under the masking decals (not completely successful there) and also a mist coat of matt black to act as a primer for the black before giving it a coat in Ford Matt Black. Typically, the finish is pretty good (apart from one small bubble which formed but which I can smooth out), but I can't keep it like that because I have to decal it up and clear coat yet - expect the clear coat to be much worse!

As you can see, there's a bit of yellow and black which crept under the masking decal, but those bits are small enough that I think I have a chance of fixing them.

Thanks for looking.

That's all looking very nice!

I do admire your finger control to be able to apply mist coats from rattle cans - I have enough trouble with the airbrush. From a rattle can my mist coats equate to a flood....!! :)

To tell the truth it's got nothing to do with finger control, but how fast you sweep the can across the model. If you start moving and press and release the nozzle when the can isn't pointing directly at the model you can avoid flooding. Then it's a case of a quick pass over the model for the mist coat and a slower, more steady pass for the wet coat. You can also spray from a bit further away to get a mist coat if you prefer, but I find it works better for me adjusting the speed of the pass.
