Eduard A-8 Butcher Bird FINISHED!

Hi everyone

As my A-6 is getting towards the primer stage I thought I’d make a start on my A-8.

Ive gone for the Weekend kit this time and added an Eduard Space set as I fancied trying the 3D printed ip and side panels. The set also includes PE seat belts.

Box art

And the Space set

I haven’t decided on the colour scheme yet. I was going for this one which is from a previous A-8 build a couple of years ago.

But then these two came in the box. And I do like the late war scheme but not sure if my airbrushing is up to it.

And this snake is pretty cool.

Anyway, that’s all for now. Progress pics soon.

Thanks for looking

The last two schemes are really good, but that middle one with all the striping is really something! I can absolutely see why you'd have skills worries, I don't think I'd be brave enough to attempt it 🤣

Thanks chaps. Mark that snake is pretty cool but the more I look at that late war scheme…..

If you go for the the late war squiggle scheme I'll do the snake aircraft, but I'll add the 210mm rocket launchers.

😄 Done! As long as you use those rocket launchers! If it goes that badly I can always spray over it all with RLM 76 and start again.

It's a deal, I'll go and get my A-8 kit and rockets out of the stash.  It will give me a chance to use those Eduard 'Space' decals as well.

Kit, decals and rocket launchers retrieved from the stash.  The W.Gr 21cm rockets were tried on various aircraft but were not very successful, but they look interesting.  A pair were normally carried,  with one under each wing.  Another option they tried was having a single rocket on the centre line, firing backwards, the idea was to attack a bomber and as the flew past it, fire the rocket back towards the bomber, that wasn't successful either.  The weight and drag from having these hung on the aircraft made them easy targets for the the escort fighters.

Quick work! Those decals look nice. I think that’s the same look set that I’m using.

James, I'm just getting my fuselage ready to paint the cockpit area and when I tried to attach the instrument panel, part C12, I had trouble getting it into position.  I remembered Mukund had a similar problem attaching his i/p.  Just below where the i/p goes there are small plastic pins on both halves of the fuselage, the pins are not on the plans so I cut them off, the i/p then fitted without a problem.  Just thought it might save you having the same problem.

Hi Bob

Thanks for the heads up on that one. I remember reading that in Mukunds build now you mention it.

That part of the Eduard instructions is quite vague. I took all of those parts off of the sprues on my kit last night and cleaned them ready for painting so I’ll go back and chop those bits off before I do.

Hi everyone

Ive not had a huge amount of time for modelling this week but did make a start on this build. I took all of the relevant parts off of their sprues and gave them a coat Tamiya German Grey. Once this had dried it was time to have a first go with the Eduard Space Decals.

TBH they were great. You only need to dip them into some warm water for a few seconds and they come of the backing paper straight away. The instructions said to use a bit of white glue diluted a bit with water which helps them stick down. I’m not sure how well seat belts and parts that need to go onto a curved surface would work but certainly these flat parts work very well. Pics below.

Hello chaps

Just a small update. I’ve been doing a bit of weathering on the cockpit in the form of a wash. It’s now ready for a flat coat and a bit of dry brushing then the fuselage halves can go together.

Tub first. Once you start to do a bit of weathering the 3D parts start to blend in very nicely.

and the lower part of the ip.

It's all looking good James, those Eduard 3D decals really improve the look of the cockpit.

Thanks Bob

Yes they’re great aren’t they. I’d definitely use them again over PE parts.

When I bought the set for my A-8 I also got a set for the Eduard FW 190D-11/13, much better than p/e or decals.  Not sure if I'll get to use them on this GB though, I have my 5 builds in labeled boxes so I don't mix them up. 🙄
