  1. I can now say, without a doubt, this is the absolute best Hurricane kit in 1/48 scale. Point blank. Done. Superbly engineered, and it fit exquisitely. Another triumph for Airfix! Looks like I'm pickling my Hase kits The ID letters on the port side were like that in my ref pics, so while it looks wonky, it apparently was like that on the real thing. I still didn't get quite right, but once I had laid the decal down, it didn't want to move, and I wasn't about to tempt fate. OOB with Xtradecals, paint was a combo of Mr. Color, and TMM. The build only took four days.
  2. These were two of the finest kits i have ever built. They are beautiful kits. They are both built straight from the box with the exeption of belts in the hurricane. The undersides and earth were airbrushed but the green was brush painted. That was a pain. The Tamiya paints airbrush beautifully , but not so good on the brush painting side i n my experience. I wish i could take better photos , they really dont do the complete models justice. My only small bugbear was the undercarriage on the spitfire. They could have been mounted better. Cue the Battle of Britain music!
  3. Hello all, I build across scales, and genres, so alongside my Trumpeter Mig-23 in 1/48, I've started this. Is anyone else heavily influenced by Airfix's wonderful new box art??: Now, I got this cheap from a shopping catalogue, and, because I can, I'm paying it off in three monthly instalments of £7.50! So, the question is, can I build this to a decent standard before I pay for it in full? I'm going to do it with the engine covers on, but cockpit side panel off, and as much as anything it's to get used to the scale before tackling the Typhoon in the stash. Early work on the cockpit suggests I may struggle, as every single part needs heavy seams scraped off, but for the age it's looking good throughout, and certainly looks very Hurri-like. (That seat isn't finished BTW!) The plastic is quite soft, so care is needed not to end up with a banana fuselage, and I've attached the side panels first to get some rigidity to the front-end. The kit spinner looks rather odd, so if anyone knows of replacements, or even better a de Havilland one (and any better wheels??) let me know. Airscale IP decals and Eduard belts in the post already from Hannants. More soon, Matt
  4. Good Evening, Seem to have been on a bit of a roll at the moment, and have finished a couple of Battle of Britain subjects, my normal builds being fast jets. Airfix new release 1/72 kits are simply beautiful, and after completing a Spit Mk.1 that had languished on the shelf for 5 years, I realised I hadn't ever built a Hurricane to a reasonable standard so thought I'd give there Mk.1 a go. Here's the finished article, the first couple of pics were taken before I'd added the antenna wire. Decals are Xtradecal. Thanks for taking a peek, all feedback good or bad most welcome, Eng
  5. My second attempt at the Airfix Hurri, Mostly OOB but added Eduard fabric belts, ez-line aerial and AML wheels VYC1 by jongwinnett, on Flickr VYC2 by jongwinnett, on Flickr WIP here
  6. Hi! Here's my Hasegawa Hawker Hurricane Mk.I built OOB except pe seat belts from Eduard. The model is painted using Gunze colours. Sorry for the lousy photos. I've used my mobile cam. Best regards Rune Haugen Norway
  7. Hello all There have been a number of really good Hurricanes posted on here lately, so apologies if seeing another one induces any eye rolling or weary sighs... This is my build of Italeri's 1/48 Hurricane Mk1 in 1/48 from late last year. This was a really nicely detailed kit, but for a relatively new tooling (2011?), I was surprised to find a really nasty large step between the upper wings and the fuselage when fitted together. Took a lot of sanding to get it somewhere near level, so may have lost some detail in that area. Otherwise though, this was a nice kit to build, with some photo etch extras included in the box for the cockpit (seat harness and instrument panel, which I managed to install without ruining, for a nice change). It was painted with Gunze / Mr Hobby acrylics. The roundels on the upper wings were painted using Montex masks, but I found them quite fiddly to use even with just two colours, so bottled it when it came to the 3 and 4 coloured ones, and reverted to the kit decals. Limited the weathering to a panel line wash and some exhaust / gun stains. Overall, pretty happy with how it has turned out. Thanks for looking. Adam
  8. Want to get started on my Airfix fabric wing Hurricane, so I thought I'd check a few details. My intention is to build it as a very eary aircraft with a two blade propeller, kidney exhausts and no ventral fin. I already know the inaccuracies in the kit that needs correcting, e.g. the wheels, but there are a couple of details I'd like to check with the Hurricane experts here: 1) Cockpit colour - aluminum painted or the traditional cockpit green? 2) No reflector gun sight, just ring and bead? 3) No head rest armour plate? 4) Any other detail I might have missed? TIA
  9. I thought it may be of interest to show some of the Hurricane stuff that I've worked on past, present & am planning for the future. Since they are never really finished, I've put them in the work in progress area. Comments welcome. After moving recently, I've finally started to get my new workshop setup- very exciting!!!! Very chuffed to be able to hang some aeroplane stuff behind my workbench. My last workshop was so small I had no room for hanging pictures etc: I had ordered some pictures of Hurricanes being built in Canada and wanted to use them, this was the result: - I consider this a work in progress since I want to replace the side view of the Hurricane with something better. - The plan view Hurricane is the second version after the 1st 'melted' into a Hurricane caricature when I put the shadow box in the sun to evaporate some moisture behind the glass..... My wife hates this desk, so when we moved it went to the workshop. Very serendipitous, since it's amazing to have a 'staging area' next to the workbench where you can throw tools while you're working on stuff. It's also the sit down work area: - The print on the left is beautiful, Hurricane scramble by Robert Taylor. A prototype control line Hurricane. It's in the maintenance facility after tangling with a Garage-109 that broke it's tail off.....: - If I get back into control line I'll likely build an electric powered version with a built up fuselage. I'm going to turn these into some form of Hurricane display, still thinking about it's composition: - The propeller is definitely Rotol, but I doubt it's from a Hurricane. This is what happens when you can't sleep and you check ebay at 4am..... If anyone has information on Rotol propellers that could help me determine what aircraft this came from I'd be very interested in hearing from you. - The 'piece of Hurricane junk' is from the center section of a Hurricane which crashed on the Russian Steppes and was recovered 50+ years later. Originally produced by Can-Car, this bit has almost returned full circle. Winnipeg is not too far from Thunder Bay (Fort William), where Can-Car is located. - I just got this Hurricane print recently, I'm either going to frame it separately or make it into part of the display? Can't decide, opinions welcome. Not really Hurricane related. This is a merlin sump off a Mustang which the local museum was going to send for scrap. The gun sight is a likely a GGS Mk 4E from an Australian Sea Fury? Here's a better picture of the gun sight (not mine). If anyone has info verifying what this gunsight was used in I'd love to hear from you: Lot's of ideas, but lots of other hobbies too.....
  10. After a bit of feedback on the next aircraft kit from Tiryidium Models. Now there is a decent 1/48 Hurricane on the market from Airfix thought I would do a second version of the Hurricane lighting kit that was on the backburner. Short YouTube video showing features of kit, navigation lights, landing lights, prop and gun fire. http://youtu.be/nrAHK_sGIv8 Was also thinking of one without gun fire so that it can be displayed with wheels down. Let me know what you think. Cheers, Warren
  11. Hi everyone, these are two well-known shots of a Hurricane formation over Egypt that have appeared in numerous publications: http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205126797 http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205190917 I have never known how to interpret the color scheme of the first aircraft. Apart from the fact that the two Hurricane closest to the camera appear somewhat lighter-colored than the rear ones (which might be just due to weathering), the dark area stretching from the exhaust rearwards on GO-G always made me wonder. It doesn't look like exhaust stains because it is far too sharply outlined. Furthermore, the dark area does not cover the code letter (in contrast to GO-J behind it). Can anyone help me? Sorry if this point as already been discussed a hundred times. Ole
  12. Hello lads, I'm new to this forum and this is my first model build ever, I hope you like it. As a newbie, any suggestion or comment will be gladly received.
  13. I noticed while visiting the War Museum in Athens a model of a Hurricane in the typical desert scheme, tropical filter, with Hellenic (blue/white/blue) roundels & fin flashes. There was no serial on the model nor subject photo. Did this scheme exist in real life, or is it 'inspired' by real events? Thanks, Greg
  14. Hi all, name is Gary. This is my first WIP and 4th kit since returning to modelling in January. I have been loitering and following your work with great interest for a couple of months. I am in awe of some ( a lot) of your work. I've built the fabric wing MkI hurricane, PRiX spitfire and nearly finished the MkIIa, all airfix. Mixed results with the 1st 2 (too much paint) The IIa is looking better (so far). Started on the new Airfix Hurricane today, and they have come a very long way since i last built one of their kits, and followed the tips by the reviewer in the Airfix magazine by assembling the cockpit framing on the lower wing and didn't glue the outer parts of the spars. This my progress so far. I will get some paint on this in a couple of days and post some pics. I am watching the other builds to try and improve my techniques.
  15. I seem to have got myself confused despite reading Camo and Markings - Paul Lucas on Page 8 there are 4 proposed schemes - A,B, C and D On Page 91 he refers to the A scheme for p/o McKnight's Hurricane (P2961). This is what I have always understood to be the A scheme the Dark Earth "U" in the centre of the wing is on the Starboard side and the opposite is true for the B scheme, being on the Port wing. This is in contradiction with page 8. Further, I have understood the rule to be that even numbered aircraft were painted in the A scheme and Odd Numbered aircraft were panted in the B scheme. This contradicts page 91. McKnight's aircraft. Looking at Eduard's painting guid for Mark IX we see the U is on the starboard wing. We know that after 1941 A and B was dispensed with and only A adopted. So far so good. Now I think I am back on track. The I look at Airfix painting guide for W3185 and see its A. No Problem you say? However I have always thought that the A scheme was adopted WHEN the RAF switched to Grey/Green. Again I am confused???? D-TA, Tucks Hurricane is clearly painted in A Scheme Without referances other photos does one doggedly rely on even = A, odd = B. Has Lucas got McKnights Hurricane wrong???? I await to be enlightened. I would appreciate some guidance as I am trying to get something finished for Southern Expo
  16. Some recently built birds from my kitchen table, built as a part of IPMS Ireland group build commemorating 90th anniversary of Irish Air Corps. Appologies for the quality of the photos and those watermarks, it's saved that way Bristol F2B, Roden, straight from te box, only one photograph exists and it was taken on Fermoy airfield around 1921: Another Roden Bristol has some Part photoetched parts thrown in. This is my interpretation of aircraft operating from Limerick 90 years ago: And 2 Hasegawa Hurricanes, box builds with Quickboost exhausts, gun barrels on MkIIc and seatbelts from spare box:
  17. Hi folks,Here,s another half built kit I wanted to clear off the shelf before getting stuck into any new projects. It was mainly complete ready for primer so spurred on by some of the excellent brush painters on the forum decided to go old school and hand paint the lot even the dreaded Aluminium dope effect on the undersides,so here she is with minimal weathering as I wanted to show the airframe in the good condition they were kept pre-war.the kit was the starter set boxing which the decals disintegrated on contact with water but thanks to Sean a new set soon were on the way so a change of undersurface colour and two blade prop from spares and job saved. Thanks for looking. And thanks Sean.
  18. Pre-War Hurricanes 1:72 Iliad Designs Although somewhat less glamorous than the Supermarine Spitfire, it was the Hawker Hurricane that formed the backbone of the UK's air defences during the summer of 1940. Designed in 1935, the Hurricane was a relatively advanced aircraft, featuring a fully enclosed cockpit, retractable undercarriage, 8 x .303 inch machine guns, a powerful liquid-cooled V12 engine and, most importantly, a single cantilever wing as opposed to a biplane configuration. Despite its modern appearance, the design and manufacturing techniques were thoroughly conventional, which proved useful when it came to production, maintenance and repair. Early Mk.Is had fabric wings, but as this feature limited dive speeds, they were replaced with metal skinned versions later on. Iliad Design is a producer of decals, colour charts and books, hailing from Canada's capital city Ottawa. Rather than focussing on Canadian subjects, however, their decal sheets feature all sorts of enticing and exotic subjects such as Nieuports used in the Russian Civil War, Gladiators used in North Africa and Asian MiG-19s. Their latest 1:72 scale sheet is dedicated to pre-war Hurricanes and would therefore seem to be the perfect companion to Airfix's latest kit. The seven aircraft featured on the sheet are L1934 of No. 3 Sqn,. L1568 of No. 73 Sqn., L1643 of No. 85 Sqn., L1975 of No. 17 Sqn, L1990 of No. 56 Sqn., 315 of No. 1 Sqn RCAF and L1606 in its civilian demonstrator guise (G-AFKX). All bar one of the aircraft feature fabric wings, which makes the Airfix kit the obvious choice as a starting point, but watch out for subtle variations in the windscreen, exhausts, propeller, fuselage venturi and ventral fairing. The decals themselves are neatly printed and colours appear to be very accurate. The decals are accompanied by comprehensive instructions which include colour diagrams and useful notes about each aircraft. Conclusion This interesting sheet is nicely printed, with crisp, clear details and bold colours. If you have the superb Airfix Hurricane (or the slightly older Sword/AZ Model kit) waiting for you to build it, then this sheet will enable you to produce a range of aircraft with interesting variation is camouflage and markings. A bonus point is awarded for including full set of roundels for each aircraft too. Highly recommended. Review sample courtesy of
  19. Hello All, This is one those kits that fights you all the way until completion. First of all was the fact that I lost the sprue with the wings on it, turns out my old man had thrown it out to be recycled. Cheers dad! Then when I had it all made up and outside in the sun drying, my youngest puppy thought it looked tasty. So she jumped up, grabbed it and chewed the tail planes off... which then means I was buggered for finishing it. Then came Vulcanicity to my rescue. He very kindly sent some of his extra tailplanes, I assume from an old model, anyways Vulcanicity, you sir, are a legend! Big up for Vulcanicity! Anyhow, I then had to break the main wings off because of what the dog done to it. So I fixed that issue, then I got the whole thing built up, and lost the fuel tanks. Luckily I had a spare set from another kit. I had fun trying to airbrush the middlestone and sandy colour on to the plane. In a complete stroke of genius, I painted the darker colour first then the lighter one. That was a lot of fun. Got it all built and painted and decaled. Put a Flory wash over it, after a while I tried taking it off, it didn't wanna come off in certain places... second time I have tried using that wash. I've got to be doing something wrong, I am going with the fact it's me using it! I also going with the assumption that these aircraft where used and really abused, thats my excuse and I am going to stick to it! Onto the pictures... See the bit on the left that refused to come off?? That is after 4 coats of gloss too... I dunno... Any pointers gratefully received. Kind Regards, Dazz
  20. Hi All, I have got 2 Gladiators, 2 Hurricanes and a Tiger Moth in this WIP, hopefully there should be some finished models soon. Obligatory kit pics. Gladiator Tiger Moth. I want to build an Aussie plane, on the decal sheet there are decals for a Tiger Moth in New Guinea. I will upload an image of the aircraft colour schemes Hurricane. I was only going to build one but have decided I like both sets of markings. None of these kits came from Toyworld, they came from Hannants. Thanks for looking. Stephen
  21. Hi all! I finished this little Hurricane way back in August but what with moving house etc it's rather slipped under the RFI radar. For ages the Hurri has been under-represented in my collection; I've built pushing 100 1:72nd models since I was nine but have only managed one decent Hurricane! So I bought a Revell kit at an airshow this spring, and decided to build it more or less OOB, with canopy closed to get another Hurri done quickly (and also as an antidote to AMS!). The only aftermarket are resin wheels and prop (Quickboost) to replace the hopelessly inaccurate kit offerings: I haven't bothered with trying to tackle the wing chord issue (which has never been very noticeable to my eyes). It's the kit scheme for BD712 of 601 squadron at Duxford in 1941, in the Mixed Grey/Dark Green scheme of early production Hurri IIbs. I am led to believe that 601 didn't operate with bombs at this period, but have found no evidence either way as to whether they used the long-range tanks. So the tanks are just artistic license! I simply used Humbrol 106 for the Mixed Grey rather than my usual Xtracrylix to get a slight contrast with Ocean Grey-I was really trying not to make this build too involved! All brush-painted as per usual. Hope you like her!
  22. Hi gents, I've just finished this - the Airfix rag-wing Hurricane in the markings provided with the Starter set for 615 Squadron, Kenley, August 1940: This is my fifth Airfix Hurricane, it's a lovely kit, I've enjoyed building each one more or less equally and I have not seen a single one of the many posted on this forum that did not look great when finished. I filled and scraped the ribbed wing panels behind the gun access hatches to represent the metal panels here, cut out and replaced the wingtip lights (as ripped off from Wolwe82's Hurricane build way back when - thanks Wolwe ) and added the aerial wire from EZ Line. I used Precision Paints Dark Green, Dark Earth and Sky for the main scheme and various acrylics for the odds and bobs. The decals are for L1592 of 615 Squadron based at Kenley in August 1940. On 17 August this aircraft was damaged in combat with Bf109s and was sent for repairs, thereby missing the big raid on Kenley the next day. Its subsequent history can be seen here. The decals looked a bit big and clunky at first, but went on well with no silvering and I'm pretty happy with how they turned out, except... well I know Gloster-built Hurricanes were supposed to have had the pre-war bright Identification Blue and Identification Red applied, but was L1592 a Gloster-built aircraft, and was the red really that bright? It's practically fluorescent on the tail stripes It seemed a bit much for the gun-cover patches so I painted over them in WEM Dull Red. Incidentally I am not sure if L1592 was ever fitted with the later type mast provided with the kit, but it has the earlier pole-type mast fitted now, and no fabric gun-covers so if you are building the kit to show L1592 as it is today that is worth considering... Anyway thanks for your attention gents, Cheers, Stew
  23. Hi folks here,s the third of my old Airfix 1/48 Hurricane,s.Factory fresh in Rumanian colours. Been a fun build but a bit of fatigue setting in towards the end so last one until next years GB.I managed to loose the two number 1 decals which should be present on each lower wing but they will turn up soon so will be added, decals were pretty good but I painted the red and yellow on the tail and only used the blue portion of the decal as the fit was poor as a one piece offering.thanks for looking and all the feedback over all my hurricane builds over the last few months.
  24. Hi gents, I've just finished this - the Airfix rag-wing Hurricane in the markings of one of the aircraft licence-built by ZMAJ in Yugoslavia, April 1941: This is my fourth attempt at the new-ish Airfix Hurricane, it's a lovely kit and I could still happily build more of them (and I most probably will). It's more or less OOB except for the aerial wire; I did scrape flat the ribbed panel behind the gun access covers as this was apparently metal not fabric-covered - it makes sense when you think about it and it only took a couple of minutes per wing to scrape the ribs off and scribe a new panel line in. I used the ejector-type exhausts although I did read somewhere that all the Zmaj Hurricanes had the kidney-type exhausts, I have seen photos of no.2337 where the exhaust is distinguishable they are clearly the later type. For the camouflage I used the painting guide provided by Lift Here! Decals which recommended for Humbrol 84 Ochre, 98 Chocolate Brown and 116 Dark Green for the upper surfaces, and I used Precision Paints RLM65 for the undersurfaces as Lift Here! recommended Humbrol 65 for this, but I didn't have any of this among my paints and they are supposed to represent the same colour - I think the PP version is less bright and slightly greyer but I like the way it looks anyway. As noted above the decals were from Lift Here! of Serbia and were excellent, a pleasure to use but sadly this set is quite difficult to get hold of now, I hope at some point they will re-release those items from their range which are currently out of stock as there are some interesting markings there and I know me, Mitch K and Sleeper Service on this forum at least would buy some of them! One possible point of controversy with the decals is that the upperwing Kosovo Cross is shown on the left wing in the instructions but it was possibly on the right wing - I have not been able to find a picture of 2347 which shows the upper wings so I went with the instructions. I also applied the gun-cover patches - I have seen models of Zmaj Hurricanes built without these, but have seen a photo of 2337 which appears to show some sort of patches over the gun-ports. The Hurricanes no. 2347 and 2348 were the last Hurricanes produced by Zmaj and were delivered on 11th April 1941 (when Yugoslavia was already under attack by Germany) and were to be flown from Zemun to Veliki Radinci but were caught on the ground and strafed by Bf109s - 2347 was so severely damaged that it was abandoned. I found this out of course after I had finished my model, so my (rather overdone anyway) staining from the shell-ejector chutes is not at all appropriate, but such is life As a footnote, this kit was built for a variety of coincidental reasons; Vanya66 and Mitch K have both recently produced excellent RYAF/VVKJ aircraft which inspired me to hunt down some decals to make a Zmaj-built Hurricane; I am moving up to Scotland at the weekend so the majority of my stash is packed and an Airfix Hurricane was at the top plus of a convenient size to build quickly and not have to re-pack half-finished and the decals arrived in time to complete it. I also wanted to try out the new Eduard micro-fabric seat harness set, which was quite easy to use (although it has a tendency to stick to itself if you are not careful) and looks quite effective once installed - see below: I don't know what the micro-fabric is but it reminded me of that Teflon tape you use to make compressor connections airtight (or radiator connections watertight perhaps). They are quite expensive for what they are - about half the price of the Hurricane kit for two sets of harness. Anyway apologies for the surfeit of verbiage and thanks for your attention Cheers, Stew
