Thought I'd get on and start my HMS Roberts mointor.

Pics of what you get in the box.

The main supperstructure has just been placed on the hull as it was easier to photograph.

I've started the painting. I always paint the full hull before adding any parts. I'm not happy with the deck colour though. WEM say to use RN05 deck grey, (their colours), yet it seems completely wrong especially when compared with the painting diagram. So I'm going to respray with their RN04.

I knew an old naval chap years back. Remember discussing monitors as i'd just read Reemans HMS Saracen. My mate recalled the remains of HMS Robers being used as the HQ for a yatcht/sailing club, withthe smaller dinghys being pulled up onto those side bulges.

Watching keenly , totally fascinated with Monitors, blame Reeman & "HMS Saracen" for that. Still reckon its his best.

I've had to a little bit more work on the resin parts than normal for a WEM kit. The 20mm tubs had quite large pour marks and there is quite a bit of flash on the smaller resin parts. I do love the the whole idea of putting big guns on these unusual ships. Reading up on them, I hadn't realised that they would flood their ballast tanks and sit on the bottom to make for a better gun platform.

One of the guns outside the Imperial War Museum was used on a monitor. I remember reading this on one of the information boards, but not which monitor. HMS Roberts sounds familiar. Am I right in making the connection?

You are quite correct.

Bit more painting done. This splinter pattern isn't as complex as some, but still seems to take ages with the four different colours. Before anyone says anything, the scheme is not completely accurate, but feel it's a good representation. Still lots more to do before I actually start building properly.

Thanks, really must get on with this, but what with holidays and work etc. I used WEM RN Antifouling red, and this the first time I'd sprayed it.

Well after an evenings work with CA this is all I ended up with. The original resin starfish structure had to be removed before building the new brass one.

Now I've reviewed the pics, it looks like some more CA is required on one of the gun surrounds.

Just a quick update, carrying out a dry run on the major PE items and a few resin bits,

What a brilliant looking ship that is - & your neat build is really doing it justice! I'm sorely tempted to save my pennies to get one of those at Telford!

Cheers guys. Still building it slowly, unfortunately I don't have enough of the right sized brass rod to make the rear mast so I'm working on some of the smaller items. I also broke some of the barrels off the big pom pom, DOH! I've now got a set of turned 2pdr barrels from Master-models so I'm going crosseyed again trying to fit eight 3mm long barrels.

I think that gun was also on HMS Resolution, the other being from HMS Ramillies. Or was it the other way round?

Thought that it was going to be an earlier ship when I saw the title.

Was very confused when I saw the acoustic boom on the bow!

looks a really nice build of an interesting subject

Very interesting indeed. I'm fascinated by these Monitors as well, not least because my other half's maiden surname was Abercrombie and I've been thinking about building her namesake!

I saw one of the monitors when I was younger at Portsmouth in the early 60's.

For anyone who is interested in Monitors the definitive book is Ian Buxton's Big Gun Monitors.

Managed to do bit more. Added the secondary armament and the forward pom poms and have started the rear mast. The rear pom pom still has four barrels to fit. Oh and I've repainted parts of the ship as I realised that I'd missread the paint codes. :shithappens:
