787s - a few to choose from...

Recommended Posts

somebody said AA's livery needs updating......how would they do this and still keep the classic polished metal look?

AA wouldnt be the same if they changed it.

as to modern jets' looks....

ok, here's a lesson in how to design and build a modern 21st century airliner -

parts required:

1 fuselage

1 fin

1 pair of stabs

2 wings

2 engines, 1 under each wing.

nose wheels and main wheels inboard of the engines

er....thats it

then give it a name......boebus....airing....whatever

Going the same way as modern gliders---------- Very efficient, but boring as hell.

They'd need a ton of silver paint to recapture that look considering how much composite there is to the 787. This would be as good a time as any to freshen up their look.

Other airlines, not to mention many other companies in many other sectors, have taken the chance to freshen up their image, change their logo and corporate identity package in general and usually, unless it was done poorly, the new look met with positive response.

It's actually advisable to freshen up the company image every so often. I met plenty of advertising specialists when I worked in graphic design who said just that. It keeps a company from looking stagnant and complacent if they care enough to keep their look contemporary.

AA have had this same look for so long that it is stale and uninspiring.

I like the pimp my 787! ha we should get you on the TV.

Having watched the vid of the test flight that wing sure does flex! :analintruder: must be strange to sit in the aircraft and see it flex like that.

1972 I think....

so yeah its a long time but nobody has managed to capture that bright mirror-like finish that AA have - it's unique

...and its their trademark.

Maybe you (or Jennings) could come up with a design and lets have a look at it....the challenge would be to create a design that

maitains the unique AA 'look' even allowing for the lack of metal to polish; silver paint just doesnt do it.

Apart from which silver paint, of one kind or another , is/was used by Northwest, Areoflot, Virgin.

And I'd hate to see AA use an all white fuselage...

any ideas??

Given the advances in surface coating technology over recent years, I wonder if they could actually come up with something like Alclad chrome that could be used full size...??

And I'd hate to see AA use an all white fuselage...

Don't forget they've already used grey paint on their airbuses, so I'd think a variety of that would be chosen rather than white?

How can the AA scheme be "bare-metal"? It must be paint already. 777's aren't just made of aluminium plate, after all!

(EDIT: I don't know of course, I just sit in them!)

I think the majority of the fuselage must be alooominumm;

It is still a stunning scheme!

"...Don't forget they've already used grey paint on their airbuses..."

well they did to start with....

but then, being AA, they came up with the barebus -

I'd say the second one is pretty polished....

The grey whale A300s that AA got from Airbus were universally disliked by company and public alike. That's why AA spent BIG bucks getting Airbus to come up with a safe way for them to strip the aircraft and return them to shiny AA bare metal. Believe me, it was BIG bucks too!

The 777 fuselage is all aluminum. The vertical fin and wing/body fairing are composite, which is why they're painted grey, as are parts of many other AA aircraft.

If AA does take the plunge and buy the 787, I think it's a very safe bet that they and Boeing will come up with some kind of relatively shiny metallic silver paint to apply to them. The state of the art in aircraft protective coatings has advanced markedly in the past few years. Things that weren't possible in the 1990s now are. Look at the metallic purple color that Thai is using - it's beautiful! Imagine a silver airplane like that. True, it won't look like polished aluminum, but then that's simply not possible on the 787.

I have some pics somewhere of an Eastern A300 in light grey (instead of the white they were delivered in - it looks quite smart, maybe EA's 2 tone blue cheatline suited it better than AA's look. I'm guessing EA went to light grey for the A300 when they went for the bare metal look.
