Nicely painted engine, I presume there’s an option for leaving it exposed.

John

Thanks John,

You can cut the top panel in three and replace it with PE frames to show the engine off.

Hope that helps

Hi Alistair.

I find this project very interesting, although I have it pending in 1/72. I see you will be using the Live Color paints. I have a couple of references from this brand and they seem to me to have a very good finish and very accurate fidelity, but somewhat delicate in their use.

Do you have previous practice with these paints?

Andrés.

I have the same project pending in 72nd scale as well. I started with the Hasegawa kit but soon I replaced it with the Italeri one. as for the Lifecolor paints.... Mixed emotions. They need too much attention in thinning and still the airbrush is clogging. They need their own thinner, low pressure and thin layers, like spraying Vallejo. To me they were difficult to use

Thanks for the great info sandros,

I have Lifecolor thinners and was planning on using them as the paint has the reputation of being finnicky.

To @Biggles87. John I've just realised that the open panel option is for the guns not the engine.

It would require some more surgery to open the engine panels up.

Sorry for the confusion.

Alistair

Looking forward to this. You can see the family resemblance to the 200 (one of my favourites) in the rear fuselage half.

It must be a tricky call to decide whether to go for the sleek lines or open everything up to display the internals.

I have a stack of 1/72 202s and 205s to build so I will be taking notes!

Adrian

Thanks Adrian,

I'm excited about it.

I really like the lines of her all closed up so that's how i'll do it.

I know all the stuff is there.

More bits cut for the next phase.

As you can see there are a few more ejector pin marks to be dealt with.

I don't think the ones on the rear of the fire wall will be seen but I'm taking no chances.

I think the open gun access panels is probably a better option’  I’m always doubtful about opening engine panels if it disrupts the overall  lines.

Alistair,

Cranking along nicely - interesting option to display the guns,

Thanks Roger,

I'm in two minds about the gun panels. It would look cool to have them open but I really don't want to spoil the lines of the airframe.

I'll need to have a thunk aboot it.

It's a shame you can't do half and half really.  You could always cut out and leave as removable I suppose,  would that work with this one Alistair?

Chris

It does have the option to open just one panel but there is a PE fitment that goes in which would stop the possibility of having the panel loose.

Alistair

I will admit I've been putting this bit off until I'd done a bit of research and practice on Lifecolor paints.

So mixed 50/50ish with Lifecolor thinners and sprayed in light coats.

The neat trick I learned online was to hit each layer with the hairdryer and then spray the next one.

After 4 coats.

Happy with that.

Other bits for the bulkhead also got painted.

These will be glued shortly and meanwhile I'll get on with the undercarriage, which, unfortunately, has to be fitted now.

Thanks for looking,

Looking good so far Alistair,  great work.

Chris

Thanks Chris,

Spraying the Lifecolor was easier than I anticipated.

And now I've said that the rest will be a nightmare.

Looking great, Alistair.

As you said it was going to be OOB,  is the paintwork so far just following the Italeri guide or do you have other references? Perhaps hidden in the breadbin?

Thanks very much.

Straight from the Italeri instructions I'm afraid.

Shh. Don't mention the bread bin. I did it once but I think I got away with it.

I got the undercarriage painted earlier on today and it was time for more glue to be lashed about the place.

That can settle in overnight and I'll get some chrome for the oleos and a light wash done tomorrow,

I'll give the engine a little dirtying up and should be able to get it glued in place.

Thanks for looking,

Alistair,

An unconventional assembly sequence to be sure, but I'm sure these Italian chaps know what they're doing,

Ooooooo looking good Alistair,  hope the undercarriage doesn't get knocked off though.

Great work.

Chris

Thanks Chris,

The undercarriage to wing spar is pretty beefy and could probably take some punishment.

Not that I intend to give it any, of course.

Famous last words.

Thanks Roger,

I looked at it for ages and tried to figure out a way to fit them later.

There were many test runs but the only way to get them in was to fit now.

It'll just need some extra care and masking.

Alistair

Yep, one of those things Alistair.

I think we all look at the instruction and see if the U/C can be fitted at a later date.

Sometimes it can, sometimes it`s a no way baby.

Still, as you said, just be careful.

Yeah, no chance with this one.

As the weather was foul I thought it might be a good idea to get the engine mounted.

Late to the party, but I can't miss this one. Off to a great start, Alistair

I'm not too sure about the engine mounting frames color, but I'll have to check my references - I might remember it wrong.

As for Lifecolor paints, I mix them with IPA, water and Windex when I airbrush them. Let's say that a 15% IPA water solution is the main thinner, with which I get the consistency that I want, then I add Windex to make it flow properly - this last part varies a lot according to the specific color. Not sure this is much help, though....
