LorenSharp
Bit further along, finally got the upper wing surfaces covered. The more I work with the metal foil the more I wish had just went with the Alclad. Trying to cover large areas even with small pieces is not easy. wrinkling definitely a problem. Took more than a few trys to get fol to set right. still a problem along any edge. wants to peel back or just not want to stay "Stuck". CArry on we must. 4
LorenSharp
Something I did forget to do before I set the wheel bay in place was to add some bracing and hydraulic lines and such. I had found some Christmas Wrapping cord while shopping back in Dec. The braided cord worked just right.Being Silver I can flake off paint to simulate chipping and wear. Added some plastic rod for bracing and smaller lines. All painted back up Now to get Messy.
LorenSharp
Lets see if I can add a subtle oily wash on the panel lines especially around the enginesThe part I always hate don't really want to foul things up now. I did make sure there was a good coating of lacquer as a base. The was is a mixture of artist oils and mineral spirits/. Once this has dried a bit then I'll wipe off and start adding exhaust stains with the airbrush. I've got to re-attach 3 of the braces where the flaps will go. I expected to flaps to pop off. which is why I havent put them on yet, just didn't expect the braces to fall off first. Looks like more delicate handling is necessary.
bar side
Like the repurposed Christmas wrapping cord. Always need a box of stuff that might find a new use
LorenSharp
Got the underneath of the port wing"messied" A combination of mechanical pencil, a wash consisting of artist oil paint/mineral spirits gently wiped off with a cotton bud, "polly S' Railroad colour Oily Black to highlight staining then MM Exhaust on the nacelles. I'll let this set over night and look at it with fresh eyes in the morning. At this point not sure if I should take some staining away or add a touch more before working on the Upper surfaces. I did manage to make new flap braces and get the flaps attached in a lowered position. will they stay on as they're supposed to? That is in the hands of the modelling gods But I'll cross my fingers just in case. 😎
AdrianMF
Looks great. Thanks for the explanation of how you did the exhaust staining too - filed away for future reference! The B-36 is a big beast, I was lucky enough to see it (and the XB-70) in Dayton last year. Looking forward to more! Regards, Adrian 1
VT Red Sox Fan
Simply stunning! Very impressive work with foil & Alclad—really impressive how u are combining the mediums—not to mention the sheer size and detail of the project—best, Erwin
LorenSharp
Now that I Have both top and bottom clad and painted time to add the decals. I loath the stencils that came with the model for the markings. They're pretty good for the windows and such but wanted to stretch badly for the markings. so I went into the stash for the USAF markings on the bottom. Slight problem the.... LorenSharp
The decals were a little bit older than I thought. Kinda dissolved soooo.... Coated the sheet with Clear Lacquer. 3 layers should do. That accomplished, I set about putting all the stenciling. mostly oversized no Step Marks and the no walk lines. After that I realized I forgot to put the taxi lights on. I cut the light area off and used it to make a clear lense. Broke out my handy dandy Vacu-Former that's old enough to get a retirement check. Took about five tries to get a shot that was good enough to use. The plastic sheets don't have the retaining holes that the originals did so they had a tendency to pull away from the rack before I could vacuum them down. The light itself I used a what could be best described as kids rhinestone just the right size. The outer glass I still had to shave and file then buff out with polishing pad.
bar side
Ouch. Those decals. Going to print some replacements? Can’t see there will be any off the shelf options out there in the size you need. Still love the stripes on the jet intakes. It’s really tricky to get the level of detail across such a large area that seems easy on a smaller model. But you are doing it
LorenSharp
The 3 coats worked and the decal went on just like it was brand new. I hadn't planned on attaching the engine pods until I was at the end. but with the racks I made to hold the wings while working on them they SHOULD be ok... Should be.😏 The bottom didn't have much in the way stencilling.

LorenSharp
On the top I made the mistake of following the placement guide in the instructions. I had coated setting solution on the wing and the decal. but by the time it had set I realized too late that it was too far towards the outer tip., but to get the decal off I would have torn up the metal foil and I wasn't recladding THAT again. so it will forever be a little off. If you're wondering I had to hold the camera above my head to get the shot of the whole wing. Not bad for dead-reckoning😗 8
LorenSharp
I did attach the Props on temporarily with some blu-tac. I wanted to see how cool it looked. Hey, give me a break, I've been staring at this wing for 5 months and I still have one more wing to go Then from the front Pay no attention to the faux T-38 on the desk. It's an old Fujimi T-38( That's actually an F-5,but I didn't know that when I got it. Before Trumpeter,Sword,Wolfpack) Yes, believe it or not Ripley, I DO build small models other than my current monsters. It still has a way to go before it can be presented. Couldn't leave well enough alone even with a closed canopy I had to put some type of office in it. SO there you have it for now, one fuselage and one wing done, One more wing and some finishing to complete(mostly armament. Wash, Rinse, Repeat.
LorenSharp
Progress slow but getting there. Finished the hardest part adding the engine intakes and flaring to match the curve of the leading edge. It went a little bit easier this time since I've had practice on the other. Also did the steps in a different order and used the Dremel with a small drill bit as a Pseudo-Router bit to cut openings a little better and a lot more precise. Didn't have to use nearly as much putty and filler to fix. Filled in the area where I cut out the flaps with Milliput and sanded and shaped. Cut the openings for the bypass vents at the tailing edge. This was where the drill bit idea really came in handy, although still messy as all get out. Fibreglass/resin dust everywhere. Couple of spots I had to use some plastic rod as filler to get a better seal. Did the same for the grillwork underneath.
LorenSharp
After that messy bit added the P/E parts I'll let this setup for a day while I finish up the Main gear bay and get it ready for installation. then primer coat it all, check for fixes, then start adding the metal foil. Hopefully starting Monday. Doesn't look like a whole bunch but made for a busy week.

LorenSharp
Main gear bay outfitted and installed, Had to add thick stock to the underneath so it would be closer to its correct position. About 8 MM worth and additional plumbing and bracing. Didn't need as much filler this time to smooth out the edges. The nacelles I had to use more Milliput to smooth out between the prop cap and the nacelle I was hoping to be further along but typical case of hurry up and wait. once the Milliput set, sanded down and smoothed out a little with glazing compound. Back base coat for the Alclad Semi Matte Aluminum and steel no walk areas The anti-flash white undersides then a couple of coats of clear lacquer to seal. I finally got the south 40 painted top and bottom. Since it's supposed to be stormy tomorrow no gardening! I can start applying the foil!
LorenSharp
While waiting for wing to dry I finished up the turrets and cannon. I didn't like the way the vac turrets turned out so I fiddled around and printed out a new set with the base. The model had a lot more detail but was too small to show up. Mostly rivets and whatnot. Note to self, no detail under 200um doesn't show up.😏 Added some bits to the brass 20mm Oerlikons and painted titanium with a dusting of burnt metal. They do kinda remind me of a death star turret.

Barrels nope.It will be interesting to see what the final weight comes too when finished.
Alan P
The word 'awesome' gets thrown around a lot on these forums but I think this build really is awesome. The quality of craftsmanship, paint finish and detail over such a huge canvas is a major achievement so far. Alan 1

Alan Thank you for the kind words Alan, My craftsmanship to be honest is so-so, If you use only one eye, squint and don't look too closely, its passable. I have no doubt there are others here that could take this kit and make it more amazing than I.
