Tim Moff
Never built Hobby Boss before. 4 nice choices decal wise - this will be OOB with wheels up. Have built the AFV F5E in Alconbury Aggressor colours, not too bad to paint the 3 way cam, could be a tad more fiddly at 1/72!! Obligatory box and sprue shots! Kit looks quite detailed, with a little bit of flash, on my initial look. Any top tips appreciated!! As with my SOP on STGBs, I will also built in 1/48. As Azureglo is doing the blue/grey Marines version, I am erring to the Brown Navy version.... Edited January 17, 2016 by Tim Moff

trickyrich
Hi Tim, welcome aboard. There are so many different Aggressor versions to chose from you could almost have a GB just on them! 1/72nd scale will make the painting a little bit more of a challenge bit it's very doable. Good luck with your build, hope it is a pleasurable one, and do look forward to seeing her in the gallery.
Hockeyboy76
Nice choice Tim. Looking forward to seeing what you do with it.
azureglo
I'm doing the same kit in the Marines guise so should be interesting to compare notes. Turns out that this is a "Minihobby" kit according to another of the F5GB participants notes, still got the ugliest pilot figure ever made, A
Tim Moff
Lol - boy he is ugly , I have done my best to make him look a bit pilotish!! He will be known as "Lt Cdr 'Butt' Ugly"!!
Tim Moff
Well I have primed, put the cockpit base colour in and tried to smarten up Lt Cdr 'Butt' Ugly! Not much yet - start on the detail painting soon!!
Tim Moff
Got on with a bit more painting of the pit, using silver dry brush and some watercolour pencils. LT Cdr 'Butt' Ugly has not got any better looking, but has demon eyes and a rather large nose, but is now painted!
mirageiv
looking good Tim, the pilot's facial expression looks like he has just run the jet out of fuel

Tim Moff
Got going again on the fit and main join. Gave everything a quick wash in floreys, assembled and got the main join done: Time to get cracking withe the main assembly!

Tim Moff
Some more construction done. The kit was not designed for wheels up - so will need to do some filling and sanding!! Wing roots gonna need some work.

Tim Moff
OK, this is my main reference - any views on FS numbers for paints - anyone actually know? Done a bit of research with various answers coming up: Kit info: A=Dark Yellow (Mr Hobby Color 39), B = Wood Brown Mr Hobby Color 43) , C = Tan (Mr Hobby Color 44) - some sites saying wrong? 1 person says: A=FS33613 (Mr Color H318), B=FS10115 (Mr Color 44), C=FS30219 (Mr Color 43) AFV kit gives theses - A = FS30117, B = FS30279,C = FS33613 A swatch: http://www.colorserver.net/showcolor.asp?fs=30117+30279+33613 Any help/ view welcome - I am not too worried as its 1/72 but some good advice / facts would help! I mainly use Mr Color (the solvent based), Humbrol, Vallejo... Edited December 26, 2015 by Tim Moff
gingerbob
Tim, you may already know this, but if you search for "F-5E 761541" you'll find a bunch of photos of this aircraft. I found a photo of another (761545) in a book that appears to be in the same basic scheme. (It has "42" on the side) I can't directly help you with paint codes, at least not yet, but it seems to me I saw somewhere some information about different paints used... if I can find it again... Hope this helps? bob
Giorgio N
This one thing I love and hate about USN and USMC aggressors: every aircraft seems to have a different scheme and it's very hard to track down the proper colours. Of the various options, I would probably rate the ones proposed by AFV Club as the most accurate. The medium brown IMHO is 30279. The lighter one may be 33613 or 33617 (both are used on USN aggressors). The darker brown may be FS 30117 or also 30140. I would experiment with these options on the coloserver swatch and see which one best fits the picture. Of course once you have found the most likely FS colours there's the matter of reproducing this using modelling paints...
Tim Moff
Thanks guys - looking at the color server the AFV numbers look right - it does make sense to do a colour strip with the various paints! I like do like the Mr Color range as they go on nice - have to mask up though! I am contemplating trying free hand - but it is small at 1/72 so it may be the blutac / crazy putty. gingerbob
Here's one person's take on "paint cross references"- not sure if it'll help. (He had patterns for a number of schemes, but not yours, of course.) bob
Tim Moff
Thanks Bob - thats useful - yep plenty of great pics of the airframe in question - when I first looked for references, on the different pics, the shades appear different, due to light conditions, camera set up etc....I just want it to look 'right' - not too bothered if its not exact! Appreciated your help with this - like you just wish the USN/Marines put out a pattern list by name and FS colours like the USAF did! Tim
gingerbob
Hi Tim, just stumbled across another nice shot of a bird in the same (?) colors that I hadn't noticed before. bob
Tim Moff
Thanks Bob - yep colours looks the same, slightly different scheme. Just ordered a variety of Mr Color paints (from Taiwan so may take some time!) and am now priming.
Tim Moff
Got the canopies masked an on: Gonna go ahead and prime, but I am sure I am going to have a battle with the top/lower join seams.....and how crap I am at seams!!
