1/144 Airifx 737-200 British Airways Negus Livery WIP Build

Recommended Posts

This kit is really showing it's age now. The intended completed diorama build shall depict the 737 cleaning up over the Algercerian/Gibraltar Bay with the Rock below and behind it, way back in the 1980's after BA retired their Trident 3 fleet.

I have a very comprehensive set of 26Decals for this build which includes a multitude of options in both BA and British Airtours liveries, and also the 1984 experimental blue belly and silver top fuselage livery which did not get incorporated.

I have seen a lot of negative talk about this kit on the web but in honesty, apart from the sink marks and a badly fitting windscreen, it is not bad considering it only cost me £3 a few years ago. This was the Air France / BA optional livery boxed kit.

I intend to get this finished over the coming weekend - thanks for looking in for those interested.

Thank goodness for Decal windscreens as the plastic part was a bad fit

So here is an interesting comparison of scale in 1/144. This shows just how big a Boeing 777 RR Trent engine of the same scale is compared to the diameter of a 737 fuselage. This was a dry fitting of the Minicraft 777 RR Trent engine from a future build.

Both items are placed adjacent to each other - no optical illusions here

Thats a lovely job on the masking John.

Nice to see some of these older Airfix airliners being built and the decals from Two-Six certainly go a long way to improve the appearance.

I know what you mean about the fit of the wind shield transparencies.

Looking forward to this one.

Chris.

Awesome work! I have this exact kit and is up soon on the build list. I'm going to be doing it OOB in the BA Landor scheme as an experiment really with using enamels, and getting a gloss finish. I'm really looking forward to seeing how you get on, looks ace so far!

Coming on nicely; I'll have to refer to this thread if I ever do a 737. Also, that engine truly is a behemoth!

Regards, Ross.

Looking sweet, John! (BTW, what are you planning to do with the red Concorde on your bench?)

Hi

That's one of 4 concordes I have in production - it was just a brown primer base coat you could see, but is now gloss white

Great paint and masking job there.

I did not use two six decals, and the red 'inverted check mark' applied over the blue was very underwhelming - almost invisible. Watching yours with interest - figuring it is time for a redo.

Cheers,

Mike

The kit has cleaned up nicely. Did you rescribe any panel lines lost to filling and sanding?

I am also very impressed with your gloss blue finish. How did you achieve it?

Cheers,

Tom.

Hi Tom - thanks for the words. I usually only airbrush in Acrylics for ease of cleaning up afterwards, but on this occasion I airbrushed Humbrol Blue at about 6psi - thinned down to milk consistency and it went on a treat - I can almost see my reflection in it!

I didn't bother re-scribing the fuselage here as I have always thought that in 1/144 scale the panels lines aren't really an essential given the scale. I work on the basis that if the kit has recessed lines and I don't disturb them in the assembly and sanding process, then I will use a wash on them but if like on this build, I end up having to remove the raised lines due to sanding, I simply leave alone and "go smooth"

Hi

This kit is now complete and on the RFI forum - below are the WIP update pictures. I never thought the disgusting Rock of Gibraltar paper weight I had for years would ever come in handy until this kit went into production....

Painted and ready for the fantastic 26Decals BA Negus livery
