Bf 109 camoflage - has there been a discussion of these images?
jimmaas replied to Mattlow's topic in Aircraft WWII
Somehow I'm seeing a forthcoming series "WW II Aromas of the Luftwaffe" with a breakdown by different manufacturers, if that makes sense..... -
In 1/48, the option is limited to the Tamiya kit, since Special Hobby has never followed through with their planned F2A-2/339B/C/E release (which is annoying, since ALL the 1/48 Special Hobby/Classic Airframes Buffalos have the twin landing light setup which was only used on the British version). If you can come by a Special Hobby Brewster cheaply, you can swap some parts onto the Tamiya kit, noticeably the belly window which is more accurate than the Tamiya part. Historically, only one B339B made it to Continental Europe, and ended up being tested by the Luftwaffe and found postwar in Germany. Six were abandoned on the Caribbean island of Martinique along with French SBC's and Hawk 75's. The rest went to the UK and served briefly with 71 Squadron before diversion to the Middle East, and even India. In photos, you can always spot an ex-Belgian machine because the upper wing roundels were repainted in MAP colors but stayed in the original Belgian locations, more 'normal' than the extreme outboard locations of the B339E RAF order. Whether the ex-Belgian FAA aircraft were repainted in TSS colors may be unknowable. The only (tenuous) info comes from a period magazine cover which shows a painting of a Middle East Brewster in maybe Dark Earth, Dark Green over either Sky or Azure undersurfaces.

As part of my (sadly derailed) Consolidated PB-2 build, here's a mix for MRP paints: 25% MRP 203 (Su-34) Light Green-Blue, 25% MRP 204 Dark Green Blue, and 50% MRP 440 Philippines Green. It's pretty close (looks better in the flesh than in photo)

Brewster B-239 vs B-339C engine visual differences??
jimmaas replied to Fin's topic in Aircraft WWII
This is (to the best of my understanding) a G105, used on the Model 339 C. As far as I know, the 205 used on the 339D (B-3119 and up) was essentially the same. -
Brewster B-239 vs B-339C engine visual differences??

I don't have the kits you refer to, but the F2A-1/239 engine was visibly different from the later variants. The crankcase housing is 'flatter' than the one used for the 339 series. Here's a photo of a 239's engine face: -
Here's an alternative 'all-gray" F2A-2. It's an oddball scheme that only existed for a month. The order for changing from the silver/yellow wing to overall gray went out, but didn't say anything about markings. So unit-level painters had to make do. On VF-2 aircraft, the side code ('2-F-5' or '2-F-17") stayed, in black, but all colored tail markings/bands/cowlings/chevrons were removed. The US insignia remained on both sides of both wings (I assume at the original 46 inch diameter), but not (yet) on the fuselage. No squadron badge (there's a retouched version of this photo with a VF-2 badge but it was never there) and no Bureau Number or Type designation on the fin and rudder.

Well, not RAF but there is this - ex French in German hands, marked as RAF for propaganda film

No, not dead yet, although life has been interfering with this model's progress. Ailerons removed to match rudder and elevators.... Getting close to painting, so mixed up a batch of USAAC Blue #23, which uses MRP lacquers; in this case 25% MRP 203 (Su-34) Light Green-Blue, 25% MRP 204 Dark Green Blue, and 50% MRP 440 Philippines Green Blue. The comparison chip is in the Monogram "US Army Air Service and Air Corps Aircraft Color Guide' by Robert Archer. Canopies have been added and faired in (I'm glossing over the less than fun part of that) The canopy over the pilot has semi-circular segments to fair it into the windscreen. I'm using silver decal (to address the interior color) with circles of the correct size cut, to be over-painted with the Blue #23. We'll see how well that works in practice!

re-worked, found some length errors which have been corrected (fractional values have been rounded up).

Is there a way to post a PDF file?
jimmaas replied to jimmaas's topic in Help & Support for Forum Issues
There was some discussion about Brewster Buffalos in "4 PRU Buffalos" and I wanted to add a chart I did up on external differences among variants. I took @Dave Swindell advice and took a photo of the chart and posted that. Kinda cludgy but it works. -
That's the question....

Feel free, Ley. I'll see if I can figure out how to post a chart that covers the external differences among variants.
