Paul A H Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 Hello all, What other things can you mix with Johnsons klear? I was thinking could i mix varnishes etc? and what ones? Korean. You can mix it with Tamiya Flat Base to tone down the gloss effect. HTH
NickParker Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 You can tint it with food colouring for huds and cockpit screens.
NickParker Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 I've used it as a thinner for acrylic paint before and it works ok just test with your chosen paint first though.
zero Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 I've heard you can use the stuff on floors too. (I would test a small area before commiting though!) no one mention dipping canopies before painting, and you can pool the stuff to make small lens also. Dave

kev67 Posted May 12, 2010 Posted May 12, 2010 I mix a small amount of lifecolour thinners, I have found this works a treat and stops it beading when spraying and does not effect the paint as it is a Acrylic based thinner plus it does not craze the gloss coat previosly put on

There was a thread dealing with this a while back and I'm not sure what the consensus was on the new stuff.

RussTnailZ Posted June 8, 2010 Posted June 8, 2010 not very good. you really need to get hold of the old clear formula, not the new cloudy stuff.Dave Can you imagine the meeting at Johnsons when all the modellers stop buying the new formula stuff. "Why have we gone from shifting a million bottles a week down to fifty thousand when its a better finish on there floors. " I wonder if they are aware of its other uses its probably best if they dont know as they would repackage it in smaller bottles and charge the earth for it. Russ
marty_hopkirk Posted June 8, 2010 Posted June 8, 2010 (edited) not very good. you really need to get hold of the old clear formula, not the new cloudy stuff. Dave Nah, no need. It's a tad milky in the bottle as a liquid and a slightly more viscous, but cures clear without any vices. Marty... Edited June 8, 2010 by marty_hopkirk
Andy Mullen Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 Russ, these were my costs finding back in 2009 - The cost is about 5p per 10ml on both bottles - old (500ml) @ £2.50 and new (750ml) @ 3.89. This compares to £1.13 for 10ml of Tamiya Acrylic Clear. So if SC Johnson sold them at over £56.50 (equiv. 500ml of Tamiya) then I would hesitate to buy. Even the peeps selling them online and at shows for £8.00, will soon be considered a bargin. I wonder if they are aware of its other uses its probably best if they dont know as they would repackage it in smaller bottles and charge the earth for it. Marty, back in 2009 I tested the old and new formulas, and came to the conclusion that at that time, I would still buy and use the old formula if spotted, but when I run out of the old, the new will possibly be an acceptable replacement. I feel the clarity of the new stuff on clear parts, doesn't quite "feel" the same. It's a tad milky in the bottle as a liquid and a slightly more viscous, but cures clear without any vices.
