Tamiya 1/100 scale aircraft - definitive list of kits?

Hello!

I’ve recently become intrigued by the range of 1/100 aircraft kits that Tamiya started producing in the late sixties and which continued through into the early seventies. It seems that every time I think I know all that has been produced I get surprised to discover something new, so I was wondering has anybody done a lot of the donkey work already and produced a definitive list of all the kits that Tamiya released in this line? I know a lot of them were re-popped by Revell in the mid eighties and other manufacturers, such as Ben, have also had a crack at them too.

The ESM wiki page of 1/100 scale aircraft has been a great help, but even that is not definitive, the two (that I know of) Tamiya B-52s are not mentioned at all for instance.

Any help would be gratefully received. Thanks!

looks a very slim list,

Not perfect, but a better starting point

Hi @peely20 and welcome to the joys of 1/100.

Troy's right to direct you to the Scalemates site and as far as I'm aware their Tamiya 1/100 list is complete.

You'll notice that in a few cases Tamiya released alternative versions of the same kit.  Mostly these included some different parts, not just different decals.

A couple of other points to note (that might otherwise confuse) are that:

  • not all of Ben Hobby's output were Tamiya re-pops.  For example their range of F-15s.
  • not all of Revell's 1/100 stuff was Tamiya either, even if at first sight it might look like it is.  For example, their Huey and Skyhawk kits are not Tamiya.

Again, Scalemates should help you with this as their 'history' bit shows you the origins.

Enjoy your quest :thumbsup2:

A BMW Models magazine ad for Dec. 1970 lists the following:

Corsair, Skyhawk, Lightning, Mirage, MiG 19, MiG21, Fiat G91, Starfighter, SAAB J35F, Iroquois,  all at 5/11 (old UK money).

SAAB AV37, F4E Phantom, Intruder all at 9/11.

B52F Stratofort at 79/6. (That is £3-19/6).

edit: Buccaneer yet to come presumably.

edit 2: John Burns’ PAK20 lists more - Bell UG-1G Huey Cobra, Boeing Vertol 107-11, F4K/M Phantom, Illyushin IL28, Bell AH-1G, MiG15 & F-86F Sabre duo, Me-262A & Me-163 duo, Sikorsky CH-54 Skycrane, Republic F-105D Thunderchief.

Quite a list there isn’t it  ?

Many thanks to all that have responded, there are way more kits in this range than I initially realised. I had no idea that they produced a Tamiya equivalent of the ‘dogfight double’ with the MiG15 and the F-86 Sabre set.

Food for thought. Thanks for the information, greatly appreciated.

I've got a 1975 Tamiya catalogue, which shows the following:

PA1025 Republic F-105D Thunderchief - this appears to be a typo - Scalemates shows the F-105 as PA1026

Later issues were the B-52D in silver finish as PA1027 and the F-4EJ Phantom as PA1028, but there weren't any more original tools unless you count the Space Shuttle and Embraer 175.

It's not quite that straightforward in that there have been (at least) 2 Revell 1/100th Skyhawks.

The earlier, both in the sense of release of the kit and the version of the A-4, was in fact the Tamiya kit.

The later, A-4M I think, was from another manufacturer.

You can still find the later kit fairly easily and it builds up nicely.

I'm not quite as sure about the Huey, certainly the current release isn't the Tamiya kit. I'm fairly sure earlier boxing's were but as I say, I'm not 100% about it.

I wish they would bring back the SkyCrane, it's a lovely kit.

John

Edited to say that I just saw this on the Bay of E a few minutes ago:

s-l1600.jpg

If I'm correct this should be the Tamiya plastic.

You're quite right John.  The A-4M is Takara.

Sorry the table formatting has been lost...

The Takara kits also reboxed by Revell mentioned earlier are indeed very good kits and worth seeking out, too. The ones I am aware of offhand are:

Rv 4056 Kfir

Rv 4057 F-8E

Rv 4058 F-100D

Rv 4059 AV-8A (all grey boxes)

Rv 4080 A-4M

Rv 4082 F-20 (both blue boxes)

...and IIRC there also was a blue box Yak-38.

Ben also had an A-10A whose original postdates the last Tamiya Minijet by a couple of years, but I guess that’s what you meant with „by example“.

The first (1986?) Revell B Huey IS the Tamiya. However, in/from the early 90s they boxed a range of new mould 1/100 helos, I think including an HH-60D and SH-60B, AH-64, Mi-24 and D Huey. The moulds apparently came from Korea (Ace/Kangnam/Academy) and were also sold as Accurate Miniatures.

It looks like Paolo missed a couple of the January 2004 white box Tamiya reissues - I got the following list from their old website, though the only one I actually have is the Buccaneer:

60003 1/100 Douglas A-4E Skyhawk

60006 1/100 SAAB J35F Draken

60008 1/100 Lockheed F-104J/G

60011 1/100 SAAB AJ37 Viggen

60021 1/100 Hawker Siddeley Buccaneer S.Mk.2

60023 1/100 Messerschmitt Me 262A & Me 163B

60028 1/100 McDonnell Douglas F-4EJ Phantom II

60029 1/100 F-105D Thunderchief

The 616xx numbered releases were in July 2004, with the Messerschmitt double and the F-4EJ coming down in price to ¥500.

The last reissue of the B-52D as 60025 didn't come out until April 2011, though I thnk it had been reissued in the early 1990s.

Thanks for this @tempestfan and for correcting me on the Huey :thumbsup2:

Are you sure about the Ben A-10, only I've never seen one (only the Takara)?

Cheers

Oops, did I blunder? I could have sworn one was pictured in some issue of SMI, probably early 90s.
