Optivisor! That’s a good idea, I’ve got one somewhere, I really must start using it.

Excellent cockpit detail as usual, you’ve put more wiring into the radio deck than I did on my 1/32 version.

John 🇺🇦

thanks John

I'm not convinced that much of it will be seen although there's quite a lot of "glass" so maybe it will be seen?

The cockpit glass had their Montex masks applied and painted with some Xtreme Metal AK480 dark aluminium.

these Xtreme metal paints cover really well even with no black base, the view from the "inside"...

Fitting the machine guns to the upper cowl was far more trouble than it should have been!?, either the holes for them to poke through are too small or the gun barrels are too large, either way it took quite a bit of scraping, the barrels are too small to sand, to get them to fit. However once fitted the top cowl was attached to the front of the airframe.

I fitted the painted gun site…

52304990592_29f8c54df7_c.jpg

…and then fixed the front and rear “glass” to the airframe.

The hole was cut out in the wood decal.

Progressing really well John.  Those wood decals are an interesting option, I’ve filed that away for future consideration.  I’m looking forward to your paint treatment, these naked birds do look very impressive when you’ve done them.

there's a couple of "makes" of wood decals, AK & Uschi van der Rosten, the AK version has a "solid" background, the Uschi ones have a "transparent" background. This means that with the Uschi version you can change the background/base colour of the wood, this becomes useful when/if you want to accentuate the wood panels, you'll see better what I mean later in the build 👍

Great progress, John, she's shaping up very nicely.

so far everything's taken far longer than "normal", at least it appears that way to me hopefully once the assembly is complete the "paint" will move along quicker?

The radiator assemble covers the “step” toward the rear of the airframe that I’d smoothed.

It's virtually racing along. A lot faster than my builds!

you know it's funny but I'd been thinking that this was going quite slowly however I've just realised that I'm very close to paint and as their will be little to no weathering there really isn't too long, baring accidents, (fingers crossed) before I can start thinking about my next build?

I “tacked” the centre glass in place with some liquid mask.

There were a few small gaps that I filled with some liquid putty.

I’m not going to add the bombs and bomb racks so I filled the mounting holes with some stretched sprue...

It looks like the worst fit was at the front end of the nose to wing join, if I remember rightly the 1/32 version was the same.

I’m sure you’ll be able to beat it into submission.

John. 🇺🇦

thanks John

it doesn't look too bad however I'll only really know when I apply some black primer, fingers crossed there won't be too much work required?

Different primer(s) are needed for the wood/linen areas and metal parts, white for the wood/linen and black for the metal.

To try and minimise the amount of masking I’ve decided to prime and paint the wood/linen parts before applying the black primer as the black will easily cover the lighter colours?

The whole airframe washed over with some isopropyl wipes and then the wood and linen areas given a coat of Stynylrez white primer.

Cheers,

I must admit to liking these "naked" versions myself, there's something about seeing the materials used to build the aircraft gives the pilots and crew even more kudos when they took to the sky

Looking good. Will you add woodgrain? and how will you try to apply it (oil/woodgrain decal/...)? wouldn't it be better to apply it now before the metal paint?

thanks Silenoz

I'll be using Uschi van der Rosten wood decals so rather than risk damaging them they'll be applied after I've finished all the paint, I just know that I'd damage them if I even thought of putting (de-tacked) masking tape anywhere near them regardless of how much "protective" varnish applied!?

Uh-oh, more filling and sanding required.

What metallic paint will you be using as if I couldn’t guess. 😜

john. 🇺🇦

I'll be using Xtreme Metal, for the "main" areas however I'll use vallejo for the small latches, in the middle of the wood, as I can brush paint them

Good luck with this one. The same idea (lack of camouflage to display the wood) is linguering in my mind.. just lacking time etc...

I've found the "half and half" mossie build, it's by a chap called Roberto Colaianni and what's even more impressive is that his version was 1:72, here's a link to his build...

I’m lucky enough to have a number of AK Xtreme Metal paints, so I’ll be using some different “shades” to try and create some visual interest. These additional “colours” will be lightly sprayed over the base aluminium colour, my theory is that they will give a subtile shift in the metallic effect? Post-it notes were used as masks, their low-tac glue is ideal for minimal effect on the painted surface.

There’s some overspray that I’ll need to attend to, I’ll do that when I “fix” the rear fuselage seam.

Next I’ll be add “shadow” colour to the linen parts.
