Sauropod
Hello, I would like to build a Mosquito (probably a PR 34) and I would like to ask for advice on the most appropriate conversion kit - I'm aware of two sets: the Valom Set and the Brengun BRL48124 Set. Hopefully someone here has experience with these sets. Many thanks in advance. Neil

Neil @JasonC IIRC did master a set, and this subject has been discussed here on occasion try "britmodeller mosquito two stage engines" in google, the site search is poor, but google works well. And, while not ideal, the Airfix B/PR XVI kit is overall good dimensionally, (being based on adding bits to their still decent FB.VI kit) and IIRC has various useful bits like the bulged bomb bay parts. The main problem is the new parts are a bit crude, and the two engines are not well done, but they are not horrible. Not one of my best answers. I'd suggest working out what Mosquito you wish to model exactly, as the there can be tricky areas to get right for certain subtypes, see the long thread on the new Airfix 72nd kit. @The wooksta V2.0 is a good chap to ask in this case.
politicni komisar
I have and stash Paragon, Brengun and from Britmodeller member Jason Chatwin. http://bit.ly/1FHBGuW Which are great. Avoid CMK and Valom sets that are useless. Samo

The wooksta V2.0
Sadly, 48th isn't my scale. The 72nd Brengun engines are good, so I'd say their 48th will be too. Valom's do not have a good press. A PM to @Neil Burkhill may get you a set of Paragon ones. IIRC CMK did a PR.XVI conversion but I'm not sure if it's still available. The engines were a little square

JasonC
Hi Neil, As I said in my reply to your PM, my 2-stage nacelles are out of production for the forseeable. I agree with the above comments that the Brengun nacelles look very nice. I think your biggest challenge for a PR.34 will be the canopy, for which there is currently no vac alternative that I'm aware of. Rob Taurus do some nice ones for the FB.VI and B.IV, but these aren't right for the later marks. regards, Jason

Jamie @ Sovereign Hobbies
Unfortunately the longitudinal dimensions are different between Airfix and Tamiya cockpits. The Airfix is generally the more accurate of the two wherever they differ in shape and dimension, so a good solution might be to add plastic to the aft end of the Tamiya cockpit to use the Airfix canopy. That Airfix kit also has a spare fuselage, so another improvement you could make to the Tamiya kit whilst at it would be to chop off the fin and rudder at the base and use the Airfix ones instead.

They are pretty smooth, and note the work the Jumei Temma does to the Tamiya fuselage, and comparison with the Airfix. while a very skilled modeller, sometimes his fixes I can find puzzling. If the Airfix fuselage is better dimensionally, maybe easier to detail and refine that? As I say, I can't check at the mo, I know the Airfix B.XVI has less finesse than the original FB.VI kit, and as Jamie has noted, has the edge shapewise and dimensionally, oddly I do remember the front of the Airfix radio has better detail than the Tamiya. Legend has it that the 1/48 Airfix FB.VI was the result of research done for a 1/24th Mosquito 'back then'. Anyway, even if you used the B.XVI fuselage you have an entire FB.VI kit left, and the Tamiya B.IV fuselage. The Airfix FB.VI kit is the only one I have built, not long after it came out, and as I was young, I'd found out about model filler, but not the idea of adjusting the kit fit before I applied glue.... As such the fit of the cannon panel is poor, as is the nacelle to wing, but think both really just needed some scrape, trim and shim attention. The Tamiya is certainly going to be an easier build, just depends on what you want from the build. One final detail point, no 1/48th kit gets the tyre tread right for the standard British block type. (the linked build just clean up the Tamiya tyres) sadly, the only accurate replacements are by Ultracast, which are now difficult to get in the UK. https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234944213-mosquito-tyres-in-148th-are-any-accurate/ Like a numpty I didn't buy any from Jamie when he stocked Ultracast, but eventually found some on evilbay with some other AM which was lucky, not that I've done much with any of it... Be great to see a WIP on this whatever route you choose. HTH

In 1/72nd scale I've got the Reskit wheels, but they are just over 1mm in diameter smaller than the Tamiya kit wheels and the Arma Hobby ones (which give you option of the double brakes or one brake and the spokes, as well as the correct tail wheel ). Though I don't know what the correct tyre diameter is and if the 1/48th scale Reskit wheels measure out the same.

I might try to make a mould of the Airfix canopy and vac form my own. This because I would like to build the Airfix kit as well. I have PM'ed Jamie so hopefully I can get those nacelles - but I will likely use them on the Airfix kit - just depends how much additional work needs to be done to the Airfix kit. I'm likely going to buy more of the Brengun sets as well. You won't see a WIP until I have finished my ICM Spitfire IX Regards. Neil
